Author's Note
Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my guide to console commands for FNV. I uploaded this about 10 years ago, and wasn't sure how many people would actually use it. Now that I'm back on a decent PC, I wanted to update this guide with more comprehensive and accurate information. I realize that in 2023, most people use guides like this to quickly look up an ID or command in-game, so I've streamlined the explanation of what the debug console is (though I've left it in for brand-new players), and added a section just for really basic stuff like caps, ammo and stimpaks. If there's any missing/inaccurate information on here that I miss while editing, comment and let me know. Have fun!
What Is The Debug Console?
About The Console
The console used in BethSoft games (such as Fallout 3, New Vegas, the Elder Scrolls series) is an in-game debugging tool that can also be used as a cheating tool. The console can be used to do a plethora of actions, notably to fix broken/bugged quests and case-by-case situations that are frequent in the Fallout/Elder Scrolls games (eg. getting stuck in terrain). Naturally, the console has plenty of illegitimate uses as well, such as giving yourself infinite health and ammo, spawning weapons/armor/aid/money, skipping quests. Use it however you want.

The console can be accessed by pressing ~ on your keyboard. It will open on the main menu, pause menu, and in-game, but not during loading screens.

NOTE: Using certain commands, such as tgm (God mode) will temporarily disable your ability to earn achievements (though there are mods available that work around this).

This guide is specific to Fallout: New Vegas, but many of the commands apply to other Bethesda Published games, such as Skyrim. Some item IDs are shared between games as well, for example bottle caps in Fallout and gold in Skyrim both share the ID #0000000f. Obviously this is infrequent as the games have different items, but my point is that you can learn the basics of the console in one game and understand how it works in other games that use it.

Plugin Base IDs
NOTE: If you have DLC, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition, or a mod that requires you to spawn an item in the console, the base ID will change depending on the load order of the plugin. FalloutNV.esm will always be 00 in the load order, because it is the vanilla game and loads first, so every base ID code from FalloutNV.esm will begin with 00. The tricky thing is that if you want to spawn something from a Lonesome Road for example, you need to take its location on the load order into account. The easiest way of find out what your load order looks like is by downloading a mod manager. For this, I use Mod Organizer 2, which in my experience is the most reliable mod managing tool out there. You can download it here:
Mod Organizer 2[github.com]
IDs for items from mods
To determine the ID for an item from a mod, many authors include the form ID in the mod descriptions, so check there first. There may also be an optional cheat .esp that places the item(s) in a container in the gameworld, generally Goodsprings. If neither of those options work, you can use FNVEdit[www.nexusmods.com] to find the ID. Be sure that FNVEdit is in the same directory as the mod, or that you run FNVEdit.exe through Mod Organizer 2 in your Fallout: New Vegas instance. And remember to keep track of the mod index in your load order! The index number will need to be entered before the item ID ex. 9Exxxxxx

Words you should understand
  • Parameter: An manipulative number you would set that would change a function in the game (eg. In the command player.additem {base ID} {parameter}, player.additem is the command, base ID is the target, and parameter is the number of targets I want to add to my inventory.
  • Cell: A whole space of the Fallout: New Vegas world. Whenever you exit a building, you are leaving a specific interior cell and entering a new worldspace cell. The Mojave Wasteland is it's own cell, the New Vegas strip is it's own cell, Doc Mitchell's house is it's own cell, etc.
  • Actor: Referring to a class in which non-player characters, Creatures, and "Talking Activators" belong.
  • NPC: Non-Playable Character
  • PC: Playable Character
  • Base ID: The code given to items as a general classification, as opposed to a singular item in the world (eg. the code for a Tin Can is different from the code for a the Tin Can in the middle of an abandoned shack in Nelson). If you use console commands to spawn an item into your inventory, you're using the base ID to spawn them.
  • Reference ID: The opposite of a base ID. The reference ID refers to that specific Tin Can in the middle of an abandoned shack in Nelson, as opposed to the code for Tin Cans in general. You wouldn't really ever need to remember what reference IDs look like, as you can't do anything with them but manipulate them in game. You cannot spawn reference IDs.

    PC Affecting Commands
These commands alter the player character's stats and reputation, as well as changing parameters such as your character's height and speed.

tdm - Demigod mode. This command makes your character invulnerable to all health-affecting variables. However, other gameplay variables such as ammo, AP, and Hardcore mode effects are unchanged.

tgm - God mode. Unlike demigod mode, God mode makes you invulnerable, as well as allowing infinite ammo, infinite AP, and Hardcore mode effects (sleep, hunger, thirst) are no longer affecting you.

player.modav, player.setav, player.getav - Player.xav is a command for editing a PC's trait, such as a skill level, a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. rank, reputation, and karma. Player.xav requires at least one parameter to alter the effects in certain ways.
Player.getav gets the current value of Skills or S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats.
Player.modav modifies the value of skills and stats by adding and subtracting them (for example, if my character has 60 Medicine, and I wanted to give them 100 Medicine, I would enter player.modav medicine 40) into the console.
Player.setav sets the value of a stat to a specific parameter (if I want a Strength value of 10, I would enter player.setav strength 10 into the console)

player.advlevel - Very simply levels up the player one level. This does not add XP points. While you gain all level perks, etc, you will not level up again until you have made up all the points for the levels gained by this command and the experience required for the next level. Alternatively, you can use getXPfornextlevel to do pretty much the same thing, but with XP.

player.rewardxp {parameter} - Adds as much XP as you set as the input. This is a very fast way to level up. Any levels gained will be granted immediately, one after the other. Use the minus number (eg. -15000) to cut off the current xp without deleveling your character.

player.addperk {parameter} - Adds a perk. Perks (along with other things) require a base ID code, meaning that you cannot simply write the name of a Perk into the console and set that as the parameter.

All vanilla perk codes are shown below.

    player.removeperk {parameter} - Self-explanatory.

    player.shownamemenu - Change your name.

player.showracemenu - Shows the Reflectron menu from the start of the game.

    player.showbarbermenu - Change your hairstyle.

sexchange - Changes player's sex. Can lead to some interesting results. Changing from a male character with facial hair will generate a female character with a beard. Great role-playing potential.

player.resethealth - Resets all limb and HP health to max level.

player.setscale {parameter} - Changes the size of your character. Default size is 1, min is 0.1, max is 10.

player.setspeedmult {parameter} - Changes the speed of the player character, it is set to 100 by default.

player.modav carryweight {parameter} - Changes how much weight you can carry. Parameter is how much carrying capacity you want to add.

player.srm - This shows a repair menu, like it would if you asked someone to repair something of yours. The amount of repair is based on your repair skill. You will see that the cost of repair in caps is calculated by this menu, but the caps do not disappear from your inventory.

setpccanusepowerarmor 1 - Grants the PC the ability to use Power Armor without completing associated quests.

removefromallfactions - Resets the reputation you have earned with all factions in the game at once. Should be safe to use without screwing up your game, though you will lose positive reputations with factions and may not have a way of earning it back, depending on where you are in that faction's questlines.

SetReputation {faction ID} {0 or 1} {parameter} - This command sets your reputation with a faction of your choice. Chose the faction ID, then type 0 or 1 (1 for good rep, 0 for bad rep) and how good or bad you want your reputation to be (1-100). Here are all the faction ID's.

    Faction Code
    Boomers 000ffae8
    Brotherhood of Steel 0011e662
    Caesar's Legion 000f43dd
    Followers 00124ad1
    Great Khans 0011989b
    Powder Gangers 001558e6
    NCR 000f43de
    White Glove Society 00116f16
    Freeside 00129a7a
    Goodsprings 00104c22
    Novac 00129a79
    Primm 000f2406
    The Strip 00118f61

setownership - If you don't wanna steal stuff, then just set it as something you own, and adding it to your inventory will not be counted as stealing.

RewardKarma {parameter} - Rewards positive or negative karma by using positive or negative parameter values. I believe the value limits are 1-1000.

Save {name} - Allows you to give a custom name to a game save.

    saq - Save and quit.

QQQ - Hard quit to desktop.
    Actor Manipulation Commands
These affect both creatures and non-playable characters. To use these commands on a specific NPC, click on the NPC in the game.

resurrect - Revives non-player character and renews their inventory. This command will not enable the completion of failed quests.

resurrect 1 - Revives non-player character without renewing their inventory. This command will not enable the completion of failed quests.

kill - Kills selected NPC. This may lead to failed quests.

killall - Kills all NPCs in a local area. This may lead to glitches and failed quests.

disable/enable - Disable removes an object or actor from the game, but does not delete. Click on what you want to disable before using this command. Can be undone by typing Enable while object is still selected.

zap - Deletes an object or actor from the game.

markfordelete - Deletes an object or actor from the game upon loading/reloading a cell.

rdf - resets all the dialog trees of all actors. A last resort for bugged dialog, can help in bugged quests or break them if not used carefully. (i.e. choosing an answer then resetting and choosing a different one may or may not break the quest based on such answers) Use with caution.

player.placeatme {base id} {parameter} - Spawns items or NPCs on your location. Don't spawn too many or your game will crash. They will also spawn directly on you, so make sure you're in an open area if you're going to spawn a lot.

addtofaction {0 or 1} - Makes selected non-player character a member of a specific faction. Add parameter "1" to make the non-player character an ally of the faction or "0" to simply make him/her friendly with it. Be sure to click on each character you want to add to the faction before entering the command. So, for example, to add an non-player character to your own Player Character's faction as a friend, you would first click on them and then enter addtofaction 1B2A4 0. Remember you will then need to use the stopcombat function right afterward if the non-player character was already attacking.

removefromfaction {faction id} - Removes non-player character from a specific faction. (For example, removefromfaction 1B2A4 will remove NPC from your own Player Character's faction). These previous two commands are useful when you need to turn a hostile non-player character friendly in order to talk to them/begin a quest related to them that you otherwise couldn't start. Add them to your faction, talk to them & complete their quest, and then remove them from your faction and they will return to being hostile. I posted all the faction codes in the Player Manipulation section.

tcai - Toggles AI Combat Processing for selected character. NPC will still be hostile, just not attacking you.

tai - Toggles ALL AI Processing for selected NPC. This will basically turn an NPC into a piece of the landscape.

setname "{name}" - Change name of any interactive item or actor in the game. Requires NVSE to perform the action (New Vegas Script Extender).

OpenTeammateContainer 1 - Will open an NPC inventory like a Companions. For those of you who don't want to/can't pickpocket.

SetRestrained 1 - Forces actor to remain in a static position, without engaging in combat or performing AI actions. Similar to the "tai" command, but you are still able to interact with the NPC.

setgs fmoverunmult {parameter} - Changes the player and NPC run speed; default is 4.

setgs fjumpheightmin {parameter} - Changes the jump height of the player and NPCs; default is 64

    Inventory and Object Manipulation
player.additem {Item ID} {parameter} Adds an item to your inventory. I will add a makeshift list of item codes in a different section. Similarly, you can remove items by entering player.removeitem {Item ID} {parameter} into the console.

setownership - Sets player ownership over an item.

setname "{name}" - Change the name of an interactive object.

unlock - Unlock doors, containers, and terminals without hacking or using lockpicks. Alternatively, you can use activate, which opens a door without unlocking it.

lock {lock level} - Locks a door, container, or terminal. The lock difficulty is measured by the level. 0 - Very Easy, 25 - Easy, 50 - Average, 75 - Hard, 100 - Very Hard. A value higher than 100 would make that it so that lock says "Requires Key".

player.setweaponhealthperc {parameter} - Sets the health of the currently equipped weapon.
    Display Manipulation And Debugging
This section is mostly useful for players on older computers, or testing out certain mods. Disabling grass, for example, can greatly improve your framerate at the cost of, well, no grass. Be mindful of leaving these commands active while loading or saving, as that can cause issues in your game.

fov [parameter] Adjusts the FOV (field of vision) to the given parameter. I believe the default is 100. <100 is narrower, >100 is wider.
NOTE: The mod FOV Slider[www.nexusmods.com] by RoyBatterian on Nexus is a more comprehensive method of adjusting your FOV, so I recommend trying that. You can fine tune your FOV between that mod's MCM and this console command as well.

tfc - Toggle Free Camera, this is mostly useful for screenshots and captures. It allows you to move the game camera freely throughout the world without limitations. You cannot move your character in this mode (you can aim and crouch), and to see your character in tfc, you must be in third person before you use tfc. You can also use tfc 1 to freeze the game, for better captures.

sucsm {parameter} - Set UFO cam movement speed (IE: freecam speed), where X is a multiplier.

tlb - Toggle Lite Brite, disables all light and shadowing.

tcl - Toggle Collision. Primarily useful for getting your character unstuck from the world geometry, which can happen a lot in these games. This affects all collision in the game. I use a mod that replaces the hitscan mechanics of vanilla NV with projectiles, so shooting is pointless with tcl on. I can't remember if that's the case with hitscan as well, but regardless, I would only use this command when you need it.

tdb - Toggle Depth Bias. Something to do with preventing shadows from flickering. I'm not a game dev so I couldn't give much more detail than that. If anyone has a better explanation, comment and I'll add it to the guide. Regardless, just leave it on.

    tlv - Toggle leaves.

    tg - Toggle grass.

tll - Toggles the display of LOD (level of detail) textures in the game. LOD, if you don't know, refers to textures depicting landmarks that are some distance away or in a different cell. For example, the Lucky 38 is visible in most parts of the Mojave but it is not the same Lucky 38 that you enter on the Strip. This command will improve performance but the tradeoff is a half-rendered landscape, so unless you are playing Fallout on a smart fridge, I recommend leaving this alone.

tp - View projectiles and spawn points.

bDisableAllGore {0 or 1} - Disable all gore in-game (0 for yes, 1 for no).
tfow - Toggle Fog Of War in the current cell.

EnablePlayerControls - Control your character during cutscenes.

coc {cell name} - Force fast travel to town/area (coc Goodsprings). This can cause crashes if used haphazardly. This can also be used to travel to dev test rooms, but they do not have much purpose to the average player.
NOTE: Unlike Fallout 3 and Skyrim, New Vegas does not have a full dev test room with every item, upgrade, etc. However, you can spawn test boxes, which contain every single item in their given category. The codes are shown below:
    Use player.placeatme #####

    Ammo = 0069EE6
    Armor = 0069EE7
    Books = 0069EE8
    Misc = 0069EE9
    Aid = 0069EEA
    Weapons = 008F7B9

tcg - Toggle Collision Geometry Visibility. Highlights placed objects in the gameworld in contrast to structures like the floor and walls. Can be useful for picking up small items that are hard to see.

twf - Toggle Wireframe Visibility. Can't imagine much reason to use this unless you're a mod author, or just curious. Expect framerate dips while this is active.

tm - Toggle Menus. Also great for screenshots. Just remember to enable them again before looking at your Pip-Boy or pausing the game. WARNING: I've personally had issues with this command in the past, especially with mods that alter the UI. You may encounter blank menu bubbles, missing pip-boy menu, weird stuff happens. Use with caution.

player.placeatme 00139b8b 1 - Spawns Testacles, The Debug Centurion next to you. Testacles the Debug Centurion was a debug tool to test Fallout: New Vegas' functions in its development stages. You can use him to change major outcomes in the storyline, reputation, etc.

tmm 1 - Displays ALL map markers. This varies from the "Explorer" perk, as it marks all locations as visited, allowing you to travel anywhere, even if you haven't visited yet.

tDetect - Toggles AI detection. You will be virtually invisible to NPCs, friendly or hostile.
    Quest Manipulation
Commands that modify quest statuses, very useful to know when you come across a bugged questline.

setstage [QuestID] [Quest stage number] - Moves the quest to the given stage. Probably the cleanest way of fixing a bugged questline, as you can just cross off your current task and move on to the next one. This requires you to know the ID of your active quest as well as what stage of the quest you are trying to reach. There are too many quests and stages to list in this guide, but the Fallout Fandom site has the quest ID for each quest page, as well as a list of the stages and how the correspond to the objectives shown in game.

resetquest {Quest ID} - Gives the given quest, removing it from the quest log. However, this may force you to redo other quests to receive it once more.

movetoqt - Moves you to the current quest objective.

showquestlog - Shows the quest log which includes everything the player has encountered and done.

GetQuestCompleted - Checks to see if current quest is completed. It will say 1.00 for yes and 0.00 for no.

sqt - Show Quest Targets, generates a list of current quest targets.

completequest {Quest ID} - Completes the given quest in the ID perimeter. Does not grant XP, but marks the quest as complete in your questlog. Mostly helpful for broken quests that aren't worth fixing. Use in tandem with player.rewardxp [amount] if you want.

caqs - Completes all quest stages for ALL quests in the game, active or not. I do not recommend doing this on a save file that you're invested in, as this will almost certainly cause issues for you.
    Armor Codes (Page 1)
This page is a little sloppy, but hopfully it makes sense. This is almost every inventory item in the vanilla game, including cut items. I recommend just using ctrl+f on these pages to find what you're looking for.

Well I guess that just about does it. Come with me, I'll see you out.
If there's anything glaring I missed, leave a comment. I don't plan on adding IDs for NPCs/enemies, as that would be a mess. Maybe quest IDs, quest items and misc. items eventually, if this guide gets attention again. Any ID that isn't on here can most likely be found on the Fallout Wiki. This guide is mostly for quick access in-game, and to occasionally explain a command in more detail than the wiki does.

I also suggest looking at the New Vegas Nexus Forums for more info on plugins and load orders.

    Happy trails, pardner!

How does resetquest work? Will it let me get Arcade Gannon's quest? He's been glitched for me and I've activated every trigger I can and I have high reputation with the followers.
