History:
The story of Katsina dates back at least to the 11th century, when King Murabus built the 21-kilometer long wall with seven gates that still surround the city. It is then a Hausa state-city led by Sarki, a king of semi-divine nature, but who faces the death penalty in case of incompetence. From the 17th to the 18th centuries, Katsina is the commercial heart of the Hausa Kingdom, and the most important of the seven city-states. In 1807, Katsina was conquered during jihad by the Fulani of Usman dan Fodio. His power then diminishes in favor of Kano. In 1903, the emir of Katsina submits to the British power.
