Why?
On May 20, 2019, Ian MacLarty decided to polish a lot in the game, including redoing the sound effects that you hear constantly while playing. I and others that I've talked to much prefer the original ones, but there is no easy way to revert them (and I've tweeted at him, but no response). The purpose of this guide is to show you how to patch in the original sound effects without having to downpatch your game.
Editing Gamefiles
Editing the gamefiles in JUMPGRID is almost as simple as it gets. If you don't know how to see where your gamedata is located, rightclick on JUMPGRID in your library, click Properties, head to the tab labelled Local Files, and you'll see a button labelled Browse Local Files... which opens your default file manager where the gamefiles are located.

The contents of the folders differs from platform to platform, however all the game assets are located in the same file on every platform - data.pak. Now this isn't a special format, in fact this is literally a zip file with a .pak extension, so all it takes to edit the gamefiles is to rename it to a .zip (or if you're using a smart archiver like 7zip you can open it directly).

The files we are going to replace are:
  • audio.lua
  • audio/collect.ogg
  • audio/gameover.ogg
  • audio/warp.ogg
... and you can download them here.[cdn.discordapp.com]

If you're wondering what we're doing editing a lua file, the new sound effects not only are new soundfiles but they have a feature where they pitch shift higher on each cube you collect. This is of course not how the game used to sound and is now being applied on the old SFX, so I removed that section of code entirely. It also makes it so portal_open.ogg is no longer used or loaded since that's new too, so you can delete audio/portal_open.ogg entirely if you so wish.

Another thing to note is that in the new patch the sound effects got a slight boost in volume (+2 dB to be exact), so I've applied those to the sounds that do apply.
That's it!
Once you're done replacing the files in the data.pak file, if you had to rename to a .zip to edit it, make sure you change it back to a .pak file and you should be good to go!
