GAME MODES

Survival

Here you will be alone, with nothing to protect but yourself. Your Survival wave high score will be shown at the Main Menu. The longer you last, the more Bosses will spawn and the more enemies will attack you at once with increasing toughness, damage, and momentum.

Vault Defence

In Vault Defence Mode, you yourself are not the object of zombie attack, but a vault containing human beings. As the vault gets attacked, you take damage. If you die without any Phoenix Perks, the game ends and so do the people you were protecting. Most of this guide will be focused on this game mode because it is the most direct approach to obtaining most achievements. As in Survival Mode, enemies increase in power, number, and speed with game progression.

Over time, you will earn money either through Perks or killing enemies. This money will be used exclusively for constructing armed turrets, meant to help you protect the vault full of people-persons. As you obtain better weapons through Perks or else continuing spawns across the map, they can be swapped with what turrets are using, making them more powerful defenders.

Cooperative

Basically Survival Mode with two people, Cooperative Mode allows oldschool coop (meaning no online support) for two players. If you have a controller, you can play solo; one character being managed via controller, the other via keyboard. Fun fun fun for the whole family... of one.

On the one hand, doing so can let you experience mode-specific Perks and give you a second chance to continue gameplay if something happens to your main character. On the other hand, you will have at least twice as many enemies coming for you, and they will toughen quickly. Before attempting, spend some time in Vault Defence Mode and unlock as many weapons as possible.

**UPDATE** You CAN actually play online coop through Steam Remote Play. See 5. Online Coop with Steam Remote Play for more information.

WEAPONS & WEAPON UNLOCKS

Weapons become available in this game through in-game spawning and permanently through timed weapon unlocks. Beware of game crashes, as a crashed session can undo all of the progress in that department you thought you had made. I recommend ending a session by player death once the M60 has been unlocked, and then again for the Pipyakagun.

ITEMS & OBJECTS, PERKS & RUNES

Across all game modes, there are items and objects that fall from the sky or spawn in random places across the map with various effects. Some are strange, some are funny, most can be deadly.

Perks are power-ups, either temporary or permanent, that come from obtaining XP and leveling up. This is achieved by killing enemies and walking over green and black XP power-ups with a Triforce-style appearance. Some Perks are universal, some are mode-specific.

Runes are temporary power-ups that appear randomly across the map. The Bloated Perk will retain their effects 50% longer while Slim Jim will reduce them by 50%, in exchange for faster weapon reloading. The four Rune types are Double Damage! in red, Haste! in orange, Invisibility! in pale blue, and Regeneration! in green. All Runes have their own specific symbols.

GAME CRASHES & BANNER GIFS

Now listen; if you're going to play this game and see it through, get used to this message. I've been so far as two and a half hours of progress in Vault Defence Mode with this popping up, the game freezing, and me losing all record of it. Any time you play this game and it crashes, all stats you've accrued, including those for achievements, are forfeit. I've found the game crashing much less in Survival and Cooperative, though it does happen.

If, incidentally, you end up coming across some odd-looking stats in pictures I post here, it's because a recent update wiped out most of my game progress.

For Banner GIFs, I would typically mix film scenes with recorded gameplay. Since in-game recording was choppy at best for this title, just imagine a bunch of melee attacks, heavy gunfire and Bosses dropping sandwiched in between Seagal's... "impact" statements.

2a. Weapons I

Weapons numbered by typical order of appearance. The missing Spread Gun would be #12, and the Tesla and Razor Guns would presumably be #13 - #14. Plasmaguns are usually found before Pipyakaguns by destroying Flying Saucers, which spawn one each after exploding.

#1. Pistol

Your starter weapon before unlocks in all game modes, and the first weapon installed on any newly placed turret. Looks to be a Beretta 92FS, but I can't be sure. This firearm is literally the safest to turn away from in favour of another; if worse comes to worst with the Random Weapon Perk, you'll end up carrying the same pistol you started with. Low to medium rate of fire, low damage, low ammo capacity, low penetration, fast reload time.

#2. Revolver

Smith & Wesson Model 38 revolver (the older J-framed Bodyguard with shrouded hammer). Unlocks after five minutes of straight play in Vault Defence Mode. Mid to high damage, slow rate of fire, very low ammo capacity, very fast reload, long range, excellent penetration.

Though certainly a low-tier weapon, the Revolver still packs quite a punch... at first. Even with Perks like Spud Gun and Blood for Bullets, it fires slowly. Even with the Double Damage! Rune, it will still begin to lack power by the time Flare Guns begin to spawn. A decent handgun early on and for some more desirable than the Pistol, but the Uzi and even Shotgun will outclass it.

#3. Shotgun

I can't tell what model this is, except to write that it has a Pistol-style grip and looks like something Bonnie & Clyde would approve of. Has a large spread, but a short range and only enough stopping power to last you the first so many waves until something better spawns. Low to mid-range rate of fire, low to mid-range penetration, low ammo capacity, mid-range damage, slow reload.

#4. Uzi

IMI Uzi Submachinegun. Spawns after the Shotgun but before the Crossbow and Flare Gun. When using the Level Up Perk, all Pistol turrets will instantly upgrade to Uzis. Lightweight, very high rate of fire, high ammo capacity (at least when considering rate of fire), very fast reload, low penetration, low damage, mid to long range. Better than the Shotgun, arguably better than the Crossbow.
2b. Weapons II

#5. Crossbow

Semi-automatic Crossbow firing green... arrows? Fires in large spread with a very short range, but is devastating to dog packs. Low damage, lightweight, fast rate of fire, fast reload, mid-range ammo capacity, poor penetration. Can be useful in Vault Defence Mode to replace Pistols for oncoming dogs. Unlocks after fifteen minutes of straight game play in Vault Defence Mode. In Survival Mode, the crossbow can be more worthwhile because of its spread and fast rate of fire. In that case, Runes and Perks increasing damage and speed would be useful.

#6. Flare Gun

For all intents and purposes, this is a handheld Rocket Launcher. It's styled very much like a large-frame revolver, with the barrel's black stripe vaguely reminiscent of a Taurus Raging Bull. Without supporting Perks, it fires four explosive rounds before reloading. This weapon is bright orange with black and is hard to miss on-screen.

This is also one of the most unique and important weapons in the game. It is the only one that can hit multiple enemies at once with explosions and stun large groups even if its explosions are not fatal, slowing their advance. Pending Tesla and Razor Guns, only Flare Guns can down raised hexes or raise sunken ones.

They are critical in Vault Defence Mode, especially when dealing with dog packs and large zombie contingents before Volcano Guns begin spawning. Unlocks after fourteen minutes of straight game play in Vault Defence Mode.

#7. M16

Probably the A3 variant of this assault rifle, as it fires full-auto. Though a very decent and well-rounded weapon in this game, it lacks the power and penetration of the M60 and other, later-spawning arms. Unlocks after twenty-five minutes of straight game play in Vault Defence Mode. The Double Damage! Rune is excellent for this firearm, as are Perks like Heavyweight, Random Bullets, Ice Ice Baby!, Not So Hungry Anymore, and Dodge This!

M16s normally spawn after Flare Guns; although the game considers them higher-tier, I tend to favour orange over black for turrets in this instance. The M16 just doesn't have the stopping power to fend off large groups of heavy zombies and especially rapid, rabid dog packs. Mid-weight, mid-level damage, high rate of fire, high ammo capacity, very fast reload, mid-range penetration. In Survival Mode, the M16 you may find preferable to the Flare Gun, owing mostly to its higher ammo capacity and shorter reload time.

The danger of waiting for more powerful guns to spawn is the chance of your happening across the Level Up Perk, which instantly upgrades all turret weapons. You might be kicking yourself wishing you had kept upgrading from Flare Guns, but you can never predict that Perk's occurrence. Beyond that, your Flare Guns will often need to reload, which might be a bit nerve-wracking when under siege.

#8. M60

Light machine gun. Probably the E3 model seen in these GIFs (minus the shortened barrel), since Get to the Choppa! is a perk that supplies you with a temporary M60. It was actually Schwarzenegger's character in the movie Predator who said that copter bit, but I'll buy it. Unlocks after thirty-five minutes straight of game play in Vault Defence Mode.

High damage, high ammo capacity, heavy, very long range, long reload time, good penetration. Runes like Haste! and Double Damage! are excellent couplers, along with Perks such as First Blood, Edge Reload, Super Reload, and Ammo Replenisher.
2c. Weapons III

#9. Volcano Gun

High-capacity Minigun, likely modeled after the heavily modified GE M134 used by Jesse Ventura and Bill Duke's characters in the 1987 film, Predator. Very high damage, high rate of fire, strong penetration, very long range and reload time. Perks like Spud Gun, Speed Reload, and Edge Reload plus Runes like Double Damage! and Haste! are invaluable when carrying this weapon. The Volcano Gun is also an essential turret firearm in Vault Defence Mode, although it has a slower reaction time than other top-tier arms. Unlocks after forty-five minutes of straight play in Vault Defence Mode.

#10. Plasmagun

Weapon of alien origin. Drops from downed UFOs and found spawning in around when the Pipyakagun generally does. Unlocks at one hour and ten minutes of straight game play in Vault Defence Mode. Relatively low rate of fire, high ammo capacity, medium penetration, very long range, high damage, short reload time.

What's interesting here is that the Plasmagun behaves differently when mounted on Vault turrets than on your person. Mounted, it has a much higher rate of fire; although its penetration is still not that hot, there are so many rounds fired in straight lines that long trains of zombies can be quickly flattened.

#11. Pipyakagun

Arguably the best weapon in the game, only being approached by the Volcano, Spread, and Flare Guns in their own rights. Some would add the Plasmagun for comparison, but I've found it to be less desirable. Presumably also of alien origin, it is lightweight and very Covenant-from-Halo looking, being also highly effective against most Bosses and zombie groupings. Very high damage, high ammo capacity, low penetration but large spread on contact, very long range, low rate of fire, fast reload time.

Unlocks at fifty-five minutes straight of game play in Vault Defence Mode. The secret to harnessing the Pipyaka's power is to create firing chains. Where single shots are not the most accurate to hit single incoming enemies, firing into a group will cause a chain reaction, spreading your shot and damage to what surrounds your initial target. It is a very good idea to have at least one Pipyakagun turret aiming directly at every point of entry for zombies as soon as possible. It will have a relatively fast reaction time and clear entire hordes for you, helping to prevent your other turrets from being confused and wasting time deciding what to shoot at.

Running into groups of enemies with one and firing can dispose of quite a few very quickly, so long as you don't get trampled during your reloads. When surrounded, it can help to run into a few enemies and keep firing; the idea is that the blast radius will hopefully spread to hit the others surrounding you, helping you avoid a panicked attempt to shoot in every other direction hoping for the best.

When going for the Rambo approach, be mindful of Mines and goons with Minesweeper heads that will explode under fire or in close proximity to you. Perks such as Dexterity, Spud Gun, Hard as Nails, Hybrid, and Ammo Replenisher are recommended. Perks to -avoid- include Dodge this! and Ice Ice Baby! because they may prevent your chain reaction from occurring.

#12. Spread Gun

High-tier shotgun firing five highly lethal energy blasts at a time. The More Bullets! perk will supply a temporary one to the player, replacing whatever firearm they were carrying previously until eventually switching back. Perks like Spud Gun and Heavyweight can be very useful, as can Runes like Double Damage! despite its already high damage.

While a devastating turret weapon in Vault Defence Mode when many are installed to overlap fire, I tend to avoid the Spread Gun as it encourages my game to crash. Those with more entry-level graphics capabilities might follow suit and use it sparingly, especially if they notice their session slowing down. Mid-range rate of fire, very high damage, long range, average reload speed, poor penetration.

#13. - #14. Tesla & Razor Guns

Weapons that I know exist, but have never seen or used. Those who have not yet achieved #8: Lock'n'Load may be frustrated trying to find them. Please, if anyone knows a command or other method to obtain these weapons, drop me a comment or private message so I can include them.

3. Bosses

Dongerino

In Survival mode, Dongerino is usually the first Boss that appears to fight you, and is the only one who will appear in all three game modes (Survival, Vault Defence, and Cooperative). He will smash the earth when you near him, causing a shockwave. Every second or third time he does so, he will sparkle red and become more vulnerable to damage for a short period.

While a weapon like the Volcano Gun will dispatch him, anything less powerful than an M16 will take a brutally long period of time and effort without Runes like Double Damage! and Perks like Spud Gun. Beware hexes that rise up from some of his earth-pounding; you will have a brief indication before they raise by their colours and placement, in a symmetrical pattern across the ground.

CrusheRhino

A mechanized Rhinoceros with fatal charge attacks and noxious gases coming from its sides. Only appears in Survival and Cooperative modes. Will sometimes appear before Dongerino in Survival Mode, and, in my experience, is the most common Boss to appear through the Ultimate Challenge! Perk upon player death. The Pipyakagun is effective against this opponent, as are the Spread and Volcano Guns. This one will take a lot more hits than Dongerino and is much faster.

If low on speed, timing is key; be careful to sidestep during every charge. You may end up taking damage every time if you're too slow. Pick up every single Invisibility! Rune that you can, because it will make him stop moving, stop attacking, and only turn to face you while you fire away. Don't get too close - this game has a bad habit of allowing... "compact" attacks. In other words, that gas could damage you major league if bouncing off of an object close to you, and a charge can kill you very quickly, even if it doesn't quite seem to touch you.

Dinosaur

A mechanical Dinosaur that fires heat-seeking missiles and is (apparently) impervious to player attacks. So far, I have not beaten this Boss. I've encountered it three times; twice overlapping with a Motherhive and once with a Doubleheaded. I believe the idea is to make their own missiles hit them, presumably by running right up close until the last possible moment before sidestepping.

Motherhive

Coolest Boss of all, in my opinion. Only appears in Survival and Cooperative modes. Will protect itself with force fields and fire small green discharges while releasing insects all around itself. After a certain attack cycle, its force field will drop, giving you the chance to inflict as much damage as possible. A Volcano Gun will kick so very much rear end, if you get the chance to use it while fending off other creatures. The Pipyakagun is also excellent here, but less so.

Doubleheaded

Two-headed American Football player that throws fiery discs and exploding fireballs at you. While this one has decent speed, he only performs those two attacks and tends to take short pauses between them. Very, very tough and dedicated to staying on top of you. Normally appears at higher waves in Survival Mode, after the Dinosaur and Motherhive.
[:] Achievements #1 - #5

#1. First Boss

Kill your first undead Boss. By far easiest in Vault Defence Mode taking down Dongerino. In that case, focus all possible fire on Dongerino as soon as you see him and until he drops. From time to time, he will still smash the ground, so be careful.

If not, Dongerino will most likely be the first Boss you run into aside from the odd Ultimate Challenge! Perk spawn. Study the Bosses section for tips on how to defeat them. Don't get frustrated if you die in the attempt; practice makes perfect.

#2. Melee Master

Use melee attack 100 times in a session. You have to actually hit an undead target for this to count. Can be attempted in any game mode, Vault Defence being the easiest. Perks like I know Kung-Fu, Athletic, Dexterity, and I Am... Invincible! will be most helpful, letting you get more melee shots in without being killed by your targets.

Runes such as Double Damage!, Invisibility!, and Haste! will also help, enabling faster takedowns due to higher damage, less attacks toward you, and enough speed to avoid zombie rebuttals, respectively. Although a game crash would erase all traces of melee kills in that session, reaching the hundred mark will get you the achievement regardless.

#3. Pacifist

Do not shoot for 6 minutes. Best attempted in Vault Defence Mode, with attention diverted from you and turrets backing you up. When you first start, you will have enough money for three turrets; try installing one each toward map entry points to buy you time. Avoid killing anything unless it reaches the vault - in which case, melee attacks only. Opting for any Phoenix Perk that may pop up would be a very good plan. Grab any XP power-ups that you can to get more Perks and improve your chances.

Alternately, wait until you are well-endowed defence-wise and stop firing. Perks are fine to use, even if they involve spawning temporary turrets or causing other damage to enemies. If you're not sure, get well set up with turrets equipped with weapons like Volcano, Pipyaka, Plasma, or Spread Guns and walk into a corner or edge of the map where hexes can't reach you and wait it out.

#4. Rampage

Perform Rampage attack. This consists of mowing down enemies until "RAMPAGE!" appears on your screen. There are screen cues leading up to it like "Killing Spree!" and "Massacre!", but your kill count has to be almost completely uninterrupted throughout. Again, best attempted in Vault Defence Mode and with well-armed turrets.

Use any Perk or Rune you can to help you, including First Blood, Double Damage!, Edge Reload, Haste!, Super Reload, and even Blood for Bullets. Perks like Grim Reaper and Dongerino! can also be worthwhile, except that they have so little range that reaching zombies outside a small vicinity or else out of player bounds can potentially ruin your progress.

#5. Crasher

Crash at least 100 cars in one session. This can be done in any game mode, although I once again recommend Vault Defence Mode to keep enemies off your back while you work. I don't know if alien spacecraft count as cars, but I do know that the other three vehicle types shown in these photos are valid. I also don't know about pianos, extra large zombie foodstuffs, and mines, but the achievement description does not inspire confidence.

You must blow up one hundred of these applicable vehicles in one round of game play. You can die and be revived as many times as needed, so long as the game doesn't end. Be careful not to tread too close to what you're blowing up, lest you be killed by the explosion. Perks and Runes such as Light As A Feather and Haste! will help you greatly in traversing the map and demolishing vehicles as they drop from the sky. The faster you total them, the more room there will be for new ones to drop, and that much sooner. If using Perks like Heavyweight, one option is to simply prance around the vault and keep shooting in all directions.
[:] Achievements #6 - #10

#6. Experienced

Earn 10,000,000 experience points in a session. Best undertaken yet again in Vault Defence Mode. Within seventeen to twenty minutes of straight gameplay, you should have surpassed your ten million XP requirement. Pick up as many XP power-ups as you can; about when dog packs are first encountered, they will start being worth very much more than they were previously.

XP Boost is an excellent Perk toward this achievement, as it gives you constant XP no matter what you do. Other Perks of interest include Deadly Gamble, Fear the Reaper, and anything Phoenix-related. It would be wise to acquire a Phoenix Perk before attempting Gamble or especially Reaper.

#7. Level Up

Rack up to 30th level. Where could I recommend this to be done? How about... VAULT DEFENCE MODE!? It should take between eighteen and twenty-five minutes of straight gameplay in this mode to reach level 30. Your place in that time gap will depend upon your vigilance and luck with XP power-ups, new zombie waves and encounters, and Perks.

If you can last twenty-five minutes in Survival or Cooperative, you'll reach level 30 there as well. If opting for that route, be sure to unlock as many weapons as you can beforehand and learn to take down Bosses quickly so they don't stack. I recommend the Pipyakagun or at least Volcano Gun. If you can get your hands on a Spread Gun, that works too.

#8. Lock'n'Load

Kill at least 1,000 zombies with each weapon type. This, for many players, will be the most frustrating achievement of all. Depending on when you obtained and played through this game, you may find yourself struggling for any hint of how to acquire the Tesla and Razor Guns. This achievement depends on getting kills with weapons you carry yourself and not from turrets or Perks that kill enemies (as in air strikes, temporary turrets, etc.) Weapon kills through Perks that supply one to your person for a time do count (Get to the Choppa!, Tool of Suppression, More Bullets!, etc.)

At present, I can't help with the two missing mystery weapons. What I can do is point you in the right direction for every other weapon. Woah, woah, wait - what's that? It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... Vault Defence Mode!! Every currently known weapon will spawn within about seventy minutes, starting with handguns and capping off with the Spread Gun. You can make progress in other game modes as well, so long as you have weapons unlocked to begin with for use in them.

You can check your personal Statistics from the Main Menu. Remember that if your game crashes, you will lose all kills and other stats associated with that session, no matter how great or incredible or important you think they are -.-

#9. Exterminator

Kill 500,000 zombies. No matter how you spin it, this is long, long, long-winded. Though all game modes apply, I will once more direct you to Vault Defence Mode; you can last longer, with both turret and Perk kills counting toward your total. Again, be cautious about game crashes; every crash will lose you all progress from that session. If you can, watch for and avoid patterns that elicit them.

#10. Stay Alive

Stay alive for at least 60 minutes. Unless you're a world-record breaker, this is happening in Vault Defence Mode. Until you get comfortable with this game's weapons and mechanics, this will be a hard achievement. You'll learn over time to choose Perks wisely and in different orders depending on the weapons you have and your play style. Try restarting until you find an XP power-up straight away; it will level you up and give you one Perk to use. I like starting with either XP Boost or Phoenix Soul.

Do everything you can to have a Phoenix Perk backing you at all times. Phoenix Soul in blue will revive you after you die and grant you a later-spawning weapon (Plasmaguns and Pipyakaguns will not change). Burning Phoenix in red will revive you exactly as you were before death, except always with one full bar of health. The remaining Burning Ashes Perk in orange will revive you after death, but with halved health. That doesn't mean you have half of your full health and to find a health power-up - it means that your overall health is cut in half, period. Since that effect will last through the session, it is the least desirable of the three, but better than nothing.

The biggest culprits for ruining this achievement besides game crashes are you being too close to explosions or else annoying hexes that often sink and/or jut out from beneath you. The problem is that, unless you're right on the edge of a moved hex, you can't possibly have time to move off of it and will die a second time instantly. The other possibility is that hexes that are risen suddenly drop below ground-level before you have time to escape, killing you again that beautiful second time.
4. Twitch Commands

I have personally never used Twitch commands because I haven't figured out how to broadcast and send them to myself. Still, for you, a screenshot list from the game's Wiki page:

I'm given to understand that there are quite a few commands not present. If anyone reading this would care to supply a list of what's missing, I'd be glad to add it here.
5. Online Coop with Steam Remote Play

As I've discovered thanks to another player, you CAN play this game online in Cooperative Mode with someone else. I'm not sure if it's because of the game's Twitch broadcasting, Steam Remote Play itself, or both.

Things to know before playing online:

1. Neither of you are forced onto a controller or keyboard. The only reason you're seeing both in these screenshots is because I happened to use a gamepad while the other player chose his keyboard. You can choose what you want in this scenario because that local play limitation is gone.

2. Leveling and XP are shared; when you grab an XP power-up or get kills and level up, so does your teammate.

3. Perks (outside of some coop-specific and universal ones) are not shared, but your screen time choosing them will be. Because there are two individual players, the game will continue even when you are choosing a Perk. Still, both your screens will be paused waiting until one is chosen, so try not to lolligag.

4. Random Events can be shared. Some Random Events (from either destroying a die on the game map or choosing the Random Perk) will affect both players the same way, changing their weapons or speed, etc. Keep in mind that when choosing that Perk, you may be choosing it for both of you.

5. Bosses are tougher. Expect much more resistance to your attacks here than in other games modes. I could be wrong, but I got to thinking that Dongerino for example was much more resilient online than even in local coop.

6. Final Score is shared. Since XP and leveling is shared, you can come to the obvious conclusion that both your final scores will also be the same... ish. You may notice the Host's favourite weapon, accuracy and vote ratings being the ones shown in that frame (in other words, their score IS the score) but everything else should be identical.

7. Be patient. It will take the time it takes for you to connect with someone. If after a few minutes you have nothing, try again. Sometimes you're better off hosting, sometimes just the opposite. If you start to lag, try to stay near your teammate and don't be afraid to stop moving and let things "catch up". If you both have mics, use them to coordinate in voice chat and make your gaming lives easier. Also make sure (if you have connection issues) that you and the other person are not sucking up your bandwidth elsewhere, like torrenting, uploading, downloading, etc.

8. Don't expect miracles. These lovely screencaps might look decent, but the truth is that my gameplay at times (with someone else hosting) was so pixelated and choppy I could hardly tell what was going on. It was so laggy at times that, although the game was still in session, my screen froze and I just kept shooting in all directions, hoping for the best.

I playfully blamed my 1GB of graphics power for those issues, but I doubt it's the main factor. Most probably, it's many factors combined, not least of which is just using a gaming workaround not officially supported.

wow very detailed, thank you

Just 2 little tips for the "Stay Alive", after you build a tower you can hand over your gun to your turret by pressing "E", then search for another and do the same for all of the towers.
Second for the Exterminator, you can go to your game location steamapps\common\killallzombies\bundled and edit settings.ini file with any text editor, in the script_data object change insane = 0 to insane = 1, and then play survival for example, but do this after you reach high level in one of the game mode so that you can have guns to add stats, and/or good one to farm kills for Exterminator

Best guide for this game ever
