Why use only offical Valve servers?
Overview
Many who have played this game for a considerable amount of time can attest to the issues with 64 tick high var servers provided for matchmaking.

This video demonstrates some of the issues many have faced.

The best option currently is to avoid match making and use an outside service like Altpug[www.altpug.com]. They have 128 tick servers in many regions with var rates hovering around the low 0.3 - 0.5

However for the times you do decide to give MM a try I have found this solution to be a substantial improvement due to the higher consistency of Valves servers as opposed to White Pinions.

One thing I have found in playing MM is I would get considerably better var on official valve servers (about 1.0 to 1.5) compared to Pinion White Label (3.0 var +)

I have blocked the White Pinion servers through my firewall and have had much more success in the last few weeks in Valve's MM (ranked up from double ak to eagle).

Configuring Windows Firewall Settings
Follow these steps to block White Pinion Label Servers and only connect to Valve servers.

  • Go to control panel -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings
  • Select "outbound rules" and under actions select "New Rule"
  • Select "port"
  • Protoco type: UDP
    Specific Ports: 24015-24030, 25015-25030
  • Select "block"
  • Apply to all network types:
  • Name it what ever you like and select finish

Testing it out
This new firewall effectively blocks non valve servers. Note that in your region there might be less valve servers available so this might increase your queue times.

@Unkown King, it still does block the servers. However I think valve has stopped using their server for offical MM games.

@khgw: it should still work. To test it you can always try to tel net to the ports. https://support.terranetwork.net/web/knowledgebase/131/Using-telnet-to-check-port-access.html

I have this set up and it worked for about 2-3 months. Currently it isn't working and I was wondering if there was an update to the ports or if I should just delete and re-add the rule. I've tried that, but maybe I did it wrong.

GriffeYYY got to system preferences -> Secruity & Privacy go to the firewall tab(start it, if it isn't started yet), go the the advanced to setup to block the UDP ports listed in the tutorial above. Best i can do with out a mac in front of me.

Thanks. On Vista I kept getting the "port list is not valid" error. I had to list every single port individually for it to work.
