What the wiki has to say about Direwolf Island and my advice to get the gold rank. Plus Cursed Crown

I'll be updating this guide at some point to make it a bit more stream lined then it already is.

Island Layout
The stone and iron technologies are available on every Dire island. Once payed for each type, their respective tech will be activated for all next islands. The mines on next islands will still have their natural appearance—also accepting coins—which can confuse inexperienced monarchs, and make them spoil some coins unnecessarily.
The Direwolf Mount
The wolf is the starter and the only mount available on this type of island.

Charge Attack
The wolf is a powerful hunter that can kill all rabbits and deer within its range with only one charge.

In this aspect it is similar to the bear, but much more efficient, with a longer range and much more stamina.

It can kill greedlings and masked greedlings as well, all with one hit. It is very useful for defending waves at night. On late-game waves though, it's dangerous to jump out side the walls because it may not kill all greedlings, seriously exposing the pup.

It can damage portals. Caution is though advised when hunting deer around small portals, as the damage can trigger inactive and exhausted portals.

During the rest buff, it can charge several times in a row without getting tired.

Howling
The wolf howls when it sees the moon. Howling it can rest, recharging its stamina and receiving the rest buff; i.e.:

it only howls at night (never during the day)
it only howls on plains (never inside forests)
it can howl under a Blood Moon

Usually it only howls once per nighttime, but if it has done any charge attack after howling, and the moon is still there, it may howl a second time to fully recharge before the dawn.

The Wolf Pup
The wolf pup follows its mother from the beginning.

It behaves exactly like the dog, barking in the direction of any incoming Greed and being especially useful before Blood Moons.

The main difference is that the pup cannot be rescued, as the defeat screen is triggered instantly the moment a greedling touches it. So the wolf charge is only useful before this moment.
Spanning The Islands
The Dire island is for speedrunners. Each coin spent on anything not absolutely necessary, means one coin not invested (or delayed to be invested) on the boat, which probably means the Monarch will not travel to as many islands as he/she could. The major distractors are:

  • the Banker
  • the stone technology on the very first island.
  • the iron technology for the first island(s).
  • the town center for the first island(s)
  • farms
  • destroying portals
  • Towers and pikemen or their equivalent

Blood Moons take place with the same frequency of those in Classic and New Lands—i.e. every five to six days—followed by the usual truce.

There is an overall day count, as in the Two Crowns campaign, making waves and Blood Moons harder as the days pass.
My Advice
  • Read Spanning the Islands as this list grows off of what it says.

    What to buy and when
  • Don't buy iron tech at all. It's a waste.
  • Buy stone tech on island 3 or 4 and only once.
  • On island 5 is the only island you should get a stone castle to get 3 squires, so that you have archers to defend your kingdom on the next/harder islands. (make sure to have 12 archers available for the squires. Also make sure you have 4 extra for the boat).
  • Never buy upgrades for the town only ever light the fire (unless its island 5).
  • Get 3 builders and 4 archers as soon as possible as this is your boat crew (later the squires and their archers will join your boat crew.
  • For the first few islands you will only need the level 2 walls or wood walls(build only one on each side and build them where you would get free walls, this makes it easier for you to defend both sides with the wolf's attack).
  • Only grab a handful of vagrants on each land.
  • Invest any coin you can into the boat as soon as possible, it takes about 3 full coin bags (give or take a few) to finish the boat.
  • Every new island (except for the first) the 2 vagrants at the Town should be archers.

Timing and what to do & when
  • Right after the greed attack, go out to hunt deer.
  • You should be off an island within 5 days (unless island 5).
  • You're screwed when winter comes so you have 48 days to make it to 10 lands (your lifeline is coins).
  • Make sure your coin bag is full before leaving for the next island.
  • Only attack the greed if there are no more coming, and they are all bunched at the wall.
  • Last but not least, stay in the walls at night because the moment the greed touch the pup you're dead.
Solo Crown Ranks of Direwolf Island
Bronze
Travel to 2 islands

Silver
Travel to 5 islands

Gold
Travel to 10 islands

Cursed
You must kill between 80 to 100 greed with the wolf before or while on the 10th island. The number is accumulative over the first 10 islands meaning you can finish killing how many you need on the 10th island.

If you've killed all of the greed you need to before reaching the 10th island, you shall receive the cursed crown instead of the gold upon landing.
A Guide on how to do the individual Islands
This sections builds off of what the My Advice section says and shows you how to use what it says in an actual play through.

Note: You'll wanna play on europe setting unless you want a challenge as shogun is slighly harder and norse lands is alot harder.

Island 1

On the first island, you should immediately scout one side for coin chests. Make sure to always sprint past the portals and only do so if it's early in the day. It's risky to wait any longer as if a greed wave happens and you are behind a portal, you'll need to be able to clear the wave with one wolf attack or the pup will be taken. You could also pay the wave off too as they will be small on the first island.

Hire any vagrants you come across and the initial two vagrants at camp should be an archer and builder. Make sure to have a minimum of three builders and turn the rest into archers.

Only light the campfire. There is no need to build it up further.

If you need to, build only the first level of wood walls where you would get free walls.

Once you've taken a day to explore one side of the island and kill some deer while you're doing it. Make sure to start building the boat. You'll need about three full coin purses to build the boat entirely.

Don't hesitate to destroy a vagrant camp if it's too close to your camp. You need the space for grass more then you need the camp.

You should be off the island by about day five. To accomplish this, you need to be going out to hunt as soon as the greed have been killed off. Or if your purse is full, paying for boat pieces.

You should have as full of a coin purse as possible before you leave.

Island 2

If you left by day five from island one, you should now be preparing for a blood moon.

If there is only one vagrant camp close to your camp, leave it as you do need to build up a little bit of a defense force for the blood moon.

Build level two wood walls where you would get free walls. Make sure you only use the wolf's lunge attack when the greed are bunched at the wall and no more are incoming as this is the safest time to attack them and keep the pup safe. (on later islands you won't want to lunge attack if any greed still have masks on. They wont be one shot killed)

Now you should have survived the blood moon. The next step during the truce night is to explore one side of the island. Find any coin chests you can and hunt deer while you're at it. Make sure to still sprint past portals and not to hunt around them as greed will still spawn from them if you trigger the portal even on a truce night.

Like the previous island:
  • Only light the camp, don't build it up further as it's a waste.
  • Start building the boat as soon as you can after the blood moon. (You can before if your coin purse is over flowing but time it carefully)
  • Start hunting as soon as the night attack is over or go buy boat pieces if your purse is full.

Your goal is to spend a maximum of five days on an island but If you can leave a day or so early, do it.

Island 3 & 4

You should start to see a pattern developing of how you speedrun an island:
  • Only light the camp, don't build it up further as it's a waste.
  • Start building the boat as soon as you can.
  • Start hunting as soon as the night attack is over or go buy boat pieces if your purse is full.
  • While hunting deer, try to look for coin chests. If it's noon or later in the day head back to camp. Don't try to pass a portal if it's that late. It's not worth the risk.
  • Make sure to build up the walls to level two in the initial first days on an island to protect yourself when it starts to get a little harder.
  • If there is one vagrant camp near by, try to keep it and hire vagrants from there and make them all archers unless you need to replace one of your builders.
If there is two camps close by, don't hesitate to destroy one to expand the plains. You need coin more then you need villagers.

Your 2nd blood moon should happen about when you're on island 4. You'll wanna pay the stone mine on island 4 and upgrade your walls to level three for the blood moon.

Island 5

This island is the only one to differ in strategy to the others.

Do not pay for the stone mine on island 5 if you bought it on island 4 as it is a waste of coins to buy it twice.

While most of the steps are the same, the difference with island 5 is you want to start building up your camp to a stone castle. This is the only island you'll do this on. You'll buy three squires and make sure you have at least 16 archers. 12 of them will be for the squires while 4 of them will be your boat crew with the 3 builders. You'll also face your 3rd blood moon on this island as you'll be here for at least 10 days. You'll wanna upgrade your walls to level 4.

Island 6, 7, 8 & 9

You'll follow the same strategy pattern that has been set up with the first few islands again, but this time you'll need to be paying attention to the greed waves, and upgrading your walls to make sure they don't fall as you won't able to replace a squire once they are killed.

Island 10

Your journey ends here if you are not going for a personal record on how many islands you can travel to.

If you do not receive the cursed crown upon arriving, you'll need to start building up your camp and walls so that at night you can kill as many greed as possible until you receive the cursed crown.

This island is the ultimate acceptation to the "no building your camp past lighting it" rule. Here you could even unlock iron if you so wish if you didn't unlock it before as you'll just be camping out on this island until you receive the cursed crown

I've updated the guide to state that you have to kill the 80 to 100 greed with the wolf

Although it says it in the video, the guide doesn't explicitly say the 80-100 greed kills has to be made with the wolf. Almost caught me out but luckily I'm still on the 10th island so hopefully I can complete this with my current save during my next session.

This delightful challenge is my only hangup...I have all the others. I keep dying before the tenth island. If it wasn't such a huge time sink I'd be able to get more attempts in. *world smallest violin plays sadly*

I'll update the guide then that you can receive the crown on the 10th island

I didn't count the number of monsters killed, but I was credited with the cursed crown after I killed about 5 monsters on the 10th island.

I haven't played since the update that added the cursed crown. Once I know I'll update the guide
Darksider 23 Mar, 2022 @ 12:11pm
Please tell me how many monsters need to be destroyed for the mad crown?
Quin  [author] 30 Nov, 2020 @ 9:00pm
The are working on more as far as I know, it's currently unknown how many more will be added and what they will be if they are added.

Also I believe they are already unlocked. you just try and see how high a rank you can get. The challenge island runs are separate from your normal playthrough saves. Just fyi if you didn't know
captain thurl 30 Nov, 2020 @ 8:47pm
so there are 3 and i can unlock 3 more or are they working on 3 more? or are the empty spaces for nothin.
captain thurl 30 Nov, 2020 @ 8:46pm
thanks!
