The reason this works is because hide in shadows is first in the round, and when it works there is nothing to target for the mobs. When attacking from shadows the crit happens before the monster can act.
The downside of this strategy is that they barely drop gold and when present in a normal party they won't level up for a looong time.
Still for a L1 rogue being able to kill golems, stone giants, a grey dragon etc is strong.
Gnomes routinely make my best casters with the highest SP. While they do have low life, a caster gets approximately 4x as many levels as a fighter to paper over those deficiencies. For me the choice is really: take higher Int for the immediate SP bonus while hoping Con + Luck will catch up at level ups or take a hit on the Int to get higher average stats and worry over quick maximums for Int, Con and Luck. At a certain point against spells hitting the whole party, Restoration becomes the go-to spell for healing and I'll just cast it preemptively in big magic fights so the caster just has to survive 1 round of spell casting. All that said, I do mix the race of my casters so the other caster will not be a gnome, just in case.
