Some stuff that has worked for me: a good combination with the Acid Mortar, I've found, is the Fire Clusterbomb. It does a bit of damage if it lands on the crew, but more importantly, distracts them and herds a few to a particular area I'm already inclined to target. I like to follow up with the acid, especially by the ship's surgery, where folks who are already injured will often go to heal, then once they're low health, snipe one if he's likely to escape or the surgeon's heading his way. I aggressively target surgeons, but I've seen two or more in the same crew, which is annoying, unless you have the Strike layout. I've continued to use cannonade because of the ability to take away the opponent's ability to shoot back effectively (one "roundshot", one "section destroyer").
