How to change RIVE's graphical options
By TheDarkPhantom
RIVE does not have any in-game graphical options other than video resolution by default, making it difficult for people who run into performance issues to enjoy the game. Here's how to find those options and change them.

Introduction
As many of you know, RIVE is seriously barebones when it comes to changing graphical settings and the only option it allows you to change, is the Video Resolution or in other words, the screen scaling amount.

This decision is not understandable in my opinion. Even if he developers probably wanted the game's aesthetics and graphical quality to be the same on all systems and platforms, this has caused a lot of issues like slowdowns and fps drops for some users.

Fortunately, there is actually a way to change the game's graphical settings using the game's configuration file. So if you have performance problems, you might want to continue reading.
Location of the configuration file
To access the configuration file, first you have to access your system's local AppData folder which is hidden by default. You can do this by typing %LOCALAPPDATA% into Windows Explorer's address bar. This will open this directory:

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local

Now find the Two Tribes folder and open it. Then open the RIVE folder. Now you should see a file named applicationOptions.json. Take a backup of this file (copy it somewhere else or add it to a RAR or ZIP file) and then open it using NotePad. This window will open:

Now we just have to modify what we see here.
Changing the settings
Again, before we proceed, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF THE UNALTERED CONFIG FILE. So if anything goes wrong and you don't know what you did, you can restore the original settings.
Now lets see what's in this file and how we can change them.

blurQuality
Sets the amount of blur effects in the game. Set it to "0" to disable all these effects, or set it to "1" or "2" to lower them.

fullscreenSize
Sets the full screen resolution.

in30FpsMode
Forces the game to entirely run in 30fps if set to "true". It will make the gameplay incredibly choppy and slow though, so leave it untouched.

lowPerfReported
I don't know what this exactly does. Better to leave it untouched until someone tells us exactly what it is.

postProcessing
Controls the post processing effects like bloom, ambient occlusion, and chromatic aberration. Set it to "false" to disable all these effects.

shadowQuality
Set the amount of shadows and their quality. DO NOT SET THIS OPTION TO "0". The minimum allowed amount is "1" and if you set it to zero, the game will crash immediately upon starting a level.

upscaleSize
Sets the video resolution / resolution scaling. It's recommended to leave this setting untouched and modify it from inside the game itself.

windowed
Set it to "true" to run the game in windowed mode.

windowedSize
Sets the windowed mode resolution.

After applying the necessary changes, save the file and close the window. But we're not done yet; as there's some important notes you should know.
Important notes
Now you can easily modify the graphical options. But there's something you should know: The game can overwrite one of your changes upon starting and that is the blur quality. If you don't set the file to be Read-Only, the game will automatically change this option's amount to "3" (the default amount) upon starting. To prevent this, right click on the config file, choose properties, check the "Read-Only" attribute and accept the changes. When you do this, you will deny the game the ability to apply changes to the config file. But this limits your ability to change another option: Video Resolution.

I recommended to change the video resolution through the game itself as it might be complicated to manually change this option for many users. However, if you set the config file to be Read-Only, the game cannot save your video resolution changes and you'll have to change this option on every single launch. So if you ever wanted to change this option in-game, make sure the config file is not set to Read-Only and only set it like this after you have made your changes.
That's all folks!
Now you're ready to make your own changes! So go and set your desired graphical options and blast some robots!
