Main Menu
The Main Menu is where you can either start a new diary, continue a saved game, create custom people, jobs, and location photographs, configure options, view the credits, and even exit the game to windows.
Start New Game
START GAME - This button is used to start a fresh diary with "new" survivors. The survivors are all in a storage bin in the game files which you can alter given the time and resources, but I will discuss the vanilla version, first. When you press this button, you will be given three forms of Game Modes.

No Survivors (Easy Mode) - This is very misleading. This is the hardest game to beat. That is because you cannot beat it. You are supposed to survive for as long as possible. As you progress in the game for a long time, you will notice that some buildings that you haven't visited (or even seen) in a while become scratched out with a red marker. This is because the zombies now own it. It's overrun. There's nothing you can do about it except go to a previous save and try to clear the zombies beforehand, but I'm getting WAY ahead of myself. There are some perks that you must take advantage of if you want to survive past the first week.

You start out with one survivor and you can recruit other survivors to help you. I would recomend that you should take full advantage of this perk since you can basically trash any survivors if they are useless and only a mouth to feed. (Don't make it a habit, though, no survivors means you lose.)

You have no Agressor Dilemas This means you do not have to worry about people coming and complicating the situation even further.

No Time Limit whatsoever. You don't have to stress out about when you're getting rescued, because, well, you're NOT getting rescued. The government set you in the middle of a city block which you cannot leave and told you that you're basically on you own, shook your hand, and kicked you out of the helicopter.

SOME BUILDINGS PRODUCE SUPPLIES. This is the government's way of saying "If we sent you out there with no renewable source of food, medicine, or ammo, we would be technically killing you." I have played this mode for quite some time so I can inform you on many aspects. Search factories for an ammo build-it-yourself kit and the hospitol for a medicine synthesis kit, and, if you're feeling lucky, try to break into the university to get a green house so you can have fruits and veggies. I wish it was pizza, though.

Road Kill (Normal Mode) - This is when you feel brave enough to start killing zombie for a purpose. You heard of a car in disrepair and you have to get five car parts to fix it. You can also look for slips of paper that give specific information on where and when a group of survivors are trading car parts for a lot of food. Though some pieces do hint where important parts are hidden, they are not necessary to beat the game. Just bring the parts with you to the car (would you rather carry the car?) and select REPAIR then guard the house with your life until the car's complete. The stakes are higher this time. Here are the perks given.

You start out with 5 survivors. That's right, you don't have to use your flashlights or beacons to gather people any more. The downside is that tensions are high and everyone isn't particularly happy with each other except for one person. They also can't be replaced so those who die will leave an empty hole that can never be filled in their hearts and your survivor roster, unless he/she's a musician. They're useless anyway.

You have some agressor dilemas. Some events happen which can change the way you look at your team forever. My favorite dilema is the girl who tries to get into your house. If you try to kill her, she will scream and attract zombies. This will also trigger a chain of events with her family who now don't know where she is. They also think you have her. Other senarios include a lady with a shopping cart, one of your survivors turns out to be an addict, the lynch mob, and the PIPER. These will be explained in time and in detail.

No Time Limit whatsoever. You don't have to stress out about when you're getting rescued, because, well, you're NOT getting rescued. The government set you in the middle of a city block which you cannot leave, yet, and told you that you're basically on you own, shook your hand, and kicked you out of the helicopter.

No buildings giving handouts. This is where you live off the land untill you leave or die from starvation.

Deadline (Hard Mode) Welcome to the big leagues, kiddo. More stress, more excitement, more surprises, more danger, more fun. You and your four comrades have just survived the zombie epidemic to the point where your life expecancy is about a week, if not shorter. You heard about the last rescue mission the government is going to fund is happening within that time. You don't know where or when, but one thing is certain: You have to get to that helicopter. Paper is required. You need a radio, a place, a time, and a frequency to contact them when they arrive. You'll only have three hours to get ready once you hear the helicopter. Here are the perks.

You start with five survivors. Love them or kill them. You only need one guy to
win, if you're hardcore like that. No replacements, like Road Kill .

Many aggressor dilemas. Now you have more things to worry about, like a super-zombie, for starters.

You have a time limit of 5-7 days before the hellicopter lands. It is possible to beat the game in a shorter amount of time.

You need at least one survivor to win. If everyone dies, you lose. At least you have four expendable survivors, on the otherhand.

No building produces any sort of supplies. You'll have to manage until the chopper arrives.
Read A Diary
Pressing this button would open the folder where you store your diaries. You can only store your diary after you finish via death or being rescued by pressing Export Diary. You can save your progress so you can continue it at a later day, but if you lose or win after you save, the save is deleted. You can also go to Zafehouse Diaries's website to read other's diaries. Don't be surprised at how much better they are than you.
Custom Content Manager
This is where you are in control, mostly. Here, you can create new survivors, new occupations, and new images for your locations. Let's go into detail about these abilities. They are listed from top to bottom on the upper right portion of the custom content manager.

Build-A-Survivor Workshop - This is where you create the perfect survivor! (or close to it) From here, you would have to select a picture for the portrait of your new survivor. The bigger the original photo is, the more detail, but you'll have to scroll down until the photo is just the right size. Any part of the photo outside the grey line is cut off from the portrait. You can also drag your photo to the perfect position, but you can't rotate it so don't take a photo sideways. You also have the ability to give a name for your fellow survivor or have the computer choose a random name each time you start a new game. You can choose how wealthy the person is, whether the survivor's a he or a she, their... orientation, their age, their ancestry, their job, and what they would be described as. After you have finished, you can choose to either accept your new survivor or discard him/her into the trash where he/she belongs. When you have finished, you'll notice a green/yellow/grey outline around the survivor's portrait. A green outline means that the survivor is going to be added to every new diary you start, a yellow outline means that the survivor is going to be added to the random pile of other survivors, and a grey outline means that he or she isn't going to be added to any new diary you start. To change this, simply click on the portrait until desired outline is present.

Build-A-Toy Workshop - This is where you can build all of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) toys and gizmos. Here, you can choose between 5 item specifications to add/modify.
When selecting an item to add, be sure to add it's name on the top left, and it's plural name on the right. It can cause you to lose everything if you forget to do that twice... Also, when you select the item to modify, note the rarity rate on each of the buildings, it's value, and it's weight. Be sure to rate it accordingly if you want realism, but then again, having a .05 lb minigun in every house you find... I will let you have fun with this part as it is very new and I want you to have a fun experience rather than me stateing all of the punch lines. Just one other note, though. Whenever you plan on making the most awesome lightweight-super-ultra-omega-prefix multitool, be sure not to put down "5" for the capacity, that's for back packs. the capacity can go from 0-100.

Wish You Were Here - When adding a location photo, it is recomended to place the most awesome representation of what you are going to add it to. Adding photos are only for vanity's sake and is not needed to improve the performance of the game, but it does add some fun.

Dream Job - This is arguably the most important aspect of the custom content manager. This is where you can create a brand new occupation to go with your brand new survivors by clicking Create new on the bottom left. Here, you have many aspects which you can tinker with:

Name of Occupation - Come up with a snazzy name for your new job. It is recomended to write something appropriate since "AWESOME MR. PERSON" would be confusing, especially if it was a woman.

Three Word Description of Occupation - This is where you describe your job in three out of six available words by relevance. I personally wouldn't find a murderer very social or enterprising, just saying.

Attributes - Hello Dungeons and Dragons! Not really. This is the threshold of normal joe, to wimpy kevin, to superman. You have four attributes to dispence six points. You could spend more or less (you can speand at most 12), but then the guy could be considered a major advantage or disadvantage and wouldn't be accepted in any competition you and your friends may hold. As said before, there are four main attributes:

---------Strong: This attribute is responsible for how many zombies the person with this job can kill with a melee weapon, how much he can hold, and the ability to avoid being hurt while killing zombies.

---------Perceptive: This attribute helps you with your accuracy, your ability to find things, and for noticing fine details. This could be useful in some unnatural situations while exploring.

---------Smart: This attribute helps with first aid and engineering-based actions.

---------Resilient: This attribute is useful for remaining calm in desperate situations like being surrounded by zombies or being extremely hungry.

Skills - This is where to allocate points onto how good people with this occupation are at certain actions. The allocation for a normal Joe would be around 60. An Einstein is at or below 70. Superman is above that. You are cheating the crap out of the game if you allocate above 75. A maximum of 90 can be allocated for 5 stars for each skill.

You can also set the minimal education of the job meaning that they need to have this amount of education before they are able to have that job.

Once you are done, you can either save the changes, or delete the occupation and start all over again.
Options
Well, you probably haven't given this button much thought, but there are many settings that you should take notice of.

Disable Music - If the music seems too repetitive, boring, or annoying, then you can disable it here. This is also useful if you're playing but don't want others to hear you.

Disable Sound Effects - This disables sound effects like zombies moaning, crashing, and other such noises from actions.

Disable Special Effects - This disable special effects like the diary shaking when one or more of your baracades shook loose or the annoying lightning bolt which freezes everything for 5 seconds.

Enable Windowed Mode - This makes it so you can change programs easier by not having it on fullscreen.

Enable Display Scaling - This adjusts your screen resolution so the program fits in your screen and little to no "white space" is present.

Enable Fast Assest Loading - This makes starting and restaring faster at the cost of using memory in your video drive.

Enable Sharing Features - This gives you the ability to copy your journal and paste it wherever you want with the default function Ctrl + V.

Enable Anonymous Metrics - This sends information like how long you survived, what actions you perfered and which items in-game you always brought with you in raids. This is all anonymous so no one's going to hack you this way.

Strategy
There are many strategies which you should explore. This game has a decent exploration/exploitation ratio. This means that there is no sure-fire way of beating the game and mistakes that you make don't always end in total disaster. Here are a few strategies that I have formulated based on the game mode.
No Survivors (Easy Mode)
With Friends Like these... - Try to get friends by any means necessary. Doing this means you have more buddies and therefore, more protection. You can immediately go to the house with a question mark and get a friend that way, then, you can stay put while signalling survivors by asigning someone to watch for zombies. This method is ideal for when you want to build up momentum before doing anything drastic. This also means that there might also be little time to gather weapons and that the survivors might not like each other. Beggars can't be choosers, either, but you can get someone for their stuff and send them on a suicide mission with nothing if they are useless. This is time-consuming and the risk for hordes attacking are high when in a late stage of any game mode, and the longer a building is neglected, the higher chance that it could be overrun by zombies.

All Your Base Are Belong To Us - Friends are secondary on your list. How can you expect everyone to get along in an unsecured base? In this method, you will be barricading building after building until the entire city is secured. This is easier said than done, but, if you are fast enough and lucky enough to gather a couple of able-bodied friends, you will be able to secure most houses before any building is begining to become overran.

This Is My Rifle. There Are Many Like It. - You have had your eye on the police station. You probably think that there's a bunch of weapons, ammo, and armor for the taking in that building crawling with zombies. I'm here to tell you that you are indeed right. Automatic assault weapons are lining the walls there calling out to you. In this method, you will be trying to clear out the police base to get the weapons. This isn't a long-term method, this is just a goal that you have to complete if you want some amasing weapons and armor. Try to get inside without being eaten within two days. This can be accomplished by repeatedly assaulting the building. Due to you putting most of your time and reasources into taking over that building, you will have little time to take over the rest of the city since the first building will be getting closer to becoming overrun. Though, you do have an amasing assortment of weapons and armor which you can use to clear out any building you please.

Eat Or Be Eaten - Food! You can't expect to get decent work out of an empty stomach, do you? Finding the greenhouse which produces cooking ingredients is priority in this method. This can be a problem since it is located in the dagerously occupied university. This would be considered a secondary method because putting most of your time and resources into food would most likely open you for attack, but, hey, at least you don't die hungry.

PILLS HERE - You need a way to protect yourself from zombie attacks, right? What if those defences fail and someone getts hurt? You're going to need a lot of medicine to help deal with the injuries such as concusions, cuts, bruising, and broken limbs. The best way for gathering the medicine is by taking control of the hospitol. This method has the best outcome if used after the This Is My Rifle. There Are Many Like It. method is completed since a lot of weapons and protection is needed to get in and secure the base. The chance for injury is high, though there's a medicine lab for making painkillers and antibiotics and a huge surplus of bandages and slints as well.

Need A Dispencer Here - Factories are somehow not all that alluring for zombies, though there is a chance in which you might find a place to create ammo. This is a very bad place to fortify, though. There is very few furniture and baricades to block the entrances with, and zombies would think that it's an all-you-can-eat buffet. If you set up everything just right, it could be lead that's on the menu. This method is best used after the This Is My Rifle. There Are Many Like It. method is completed since you have alot of automatice ammo-hogs.
Road Kill (Normal Mode)
With Friends Like these... - Try to get friends by any means necessary. Doing this means you have more buddies and therefore, more protection. You can immediately go to the house with a question mark and get a friend that way, then, you can stay put while signalling survivors by asigning someone to watch for zombies. This method is ideal for when you want to build up momentum before doing anything drastic. This also means that there might also be little time to gather weapons and that the survivors might not like each other. Beggars can't be choosers, either, but you can get someone for their stuff and send them on a suicide mission with nothing if they are useless. This is time-consuming and the risk for hordes attacking are high when in a late stages of any game mode.

Divide And Conquer - Since you usually have 2-4 usefull teammates, you should send them out to different houses and stores to search for car parts. Doing this, you can easily accumilate more hints and maybe even discover where and when this scavenger group is going to make a trade of carparts for food. Though this is an effective method if you're not staying in one place, you are spread thin so your teammates may be surrounded quite easily.

All Your Base Are Belong To Us - Friends are secondary on your list. How can you expect everyone to get along in an unsecured base? In this method, you will be barricading building after building until the entire city is secured. This is easier said than done. I've played this game mode dozens of times, though I haven't experienced one building become overrun. It is possible that the feature of being overrun is only available on No Survivors (Easy Mode).

Due to you putting most of your time and reasources into taking over that building, you will have little time to take over the rest of the city since the number of zombies in the city slowly builds up into hordes. Though, you do have an amasing assortment of weapons and armor which you can use to clear out any building you please.

Eat Or Be Eaten - Food! You can't expect to get decent work out of an empty stomach, do you? This would be considered a secondary method because putting most of your time and resources into food would most likely open you for attack, but, hey, at least you die happy.
Deadline (Hard Mode)
Divide And Conquer - This is a major method in this game mode. You have to get the pieces of paper detailing the rescue mission before the hellicopter leaves. Spread out, but regroup often due to the many aggressor dilemas which will plauge your survivors.

Fortify, Gather Knowledge, Move, Repeat - This is similiar to the All Your Base Are Belong To Us method except you're targeting houses and stores only. You should move often if you want to meet the hellicopter, though. What you do is barricade the building that you're currently occupying to buy some time from the zombies outside and searching for pieces of paper. If no paper is found and the building has been searched somewhat, you should move on to the next house/store.

OPERATION ADAMANTIUM - Find a way to break into the police station and live, then go from house to store to house to store looking for the radio. When you have it, look for clues on where the rescue is happening and fortify it. This can be very difficult since most of the time would be spent creating a hole in the olice station, but maybe that's where the rescue is located?

NOTE: THESE METHODS ARE NOT MANDATORY. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO PLAY AS YOU WANT AND TO ADJUST TO THE SITUATION AS NEEDED. THESE ARE ONLY SUGGESTIONS AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Actions
Here is a list of actions and the pros/cons in the game.

Spreading rumors: This is extremely useful in improving relationships temporarily. The downside is that the reactions of the rumor can backfire and make other people dispise the survivor. The reactions can range from becoming closer to being profoundly disinterested to extremely horrified. Choose wisely. The most effective results come from the most exagerated descriptions and from matching descriptions with those that you want to affect. Activism is in no way able to make someone dislike the other. Charity affects those who have the same wealth and/or education said in the description and can horrify people who have prejudices towards said wealth. Connection is when you tell someone that they are related but got seperated due to either a family feud or they got split apart. If it is a family feud, the person described would have negative emotions towards the survivor, but those who have prejudices towards the person related would like the survivor. Vice versa with the seperation of family. Crime should be used only in dire situations. It is only affected positively with those that have prejudices towards the victom of the crime. The rest are horrified or indifferent. Being a celebrity can be useful, just becareful with those who have a prejuce of wealth, age, or gender.

Sniping Zombies: This is a major help only if you are dirrecting the survivor(s) to shoot in an adjacent building. The negative side of this is that it can rapidly drain your ammo and it can create noise and draw zombies towards you if it isn't a crossbow or a silenced pistol.

Treating Injuries: This is extremely useful since tending your wounds would decrease the chance of infection and increase productivity. Bandages treal cuts and lacerations, slints treat broken bones, antibiotics treat fevers, and pain killers treat contusions and general pain, it also helps increase productivity from the wounded. The only downside is that usually, another person would have to help treat the wounds of another survivor and that if the survivors are not particularly good at treating wounds, they would bicker which would make it make difficult to heal and could cause more injuries.

Collecting ingredients (No Survivors): Getting cooking ingredients from the greenhouse in the university is important if you don't want to starve to death.

Breaching: This is the only way to occupy a building. The downside is that once you breach it, you will have to kill every zombie inside at once or else they will kill you. As stated from everyone else. It is strongly recommended to assault the building if it isn't a store, factory, warehouse, or house.

Preparing A Meal: When making meals, you can make a small meal which uses 4 cooking ingredients or a large meal which uses 25 cooking ingreadients. The difference of the two is that a large meal is needed to hold a feast.

Hold A Feast: When holding a feast everyone needs to be assigned to it and everyone gets to have fun and eat for an hour. This will create noise but it will feed the entire group and make it so everone's relationships are excellent.

Watching For Zombies: Contrary to belief, this is an extremely useful action. When patroling, it is recommended that you should have at least one person spotting zombies so the patroler wouldn't have to look for them. This is an efficient way of clearing the area around you. This does, however mean that he's not doing anything else.

Investigating: This should ony be used if you are checking to see if there are any zombies inside the building. It is recommended to have a flashlight or a pair of binoculars for each survivor investigating. The survivors do not attack zombies because it is only a reconnaissance mission.

Cleaning Up Corpses: This is helpful to the group only when there aren't a dangerous amount of zombies near your house. It is possible for some of the zombies to be playing dead and the added effect in which the rotting corpses spoil your food. Because of this, it is essiential to use your time between assaults to/from zombies to clean up the corpses in the building.

Creating Medicine (No Survivors): Having the need to make medicine if you depleted everything else is probably a sign that you have either gotten as close as possible to beating the game on easy mode (if it was possible), or you are extremely unlucky. You can only make painkillers or antibiotics and it takes a while to create it. You usually only get one every time you are successful in creating it.
Actions II
Patrolling Outside: This is useful for thinning the number of zombies immediately outside your home. This action is rather quiet and is the best way to efficiently get rid of any threat nearby. It is slightly recommended to only patrol when less than 5 + 3 x (Survivors patroling) zombies are outside, or else you might have some dead teammates.

Assaulting; This is extremely useful whenever you want to breach a building. Assaulting a building involves attempting to kill all of the zombies around the structure and trying to shoot throught the windows if any zombies are inside and in front of the windows and if you have guns and ammo. After assaulting a building, there is a chance that a group of zombies would shuffle out of the building. Breaching would be safest when there are no zombies inside, or if you cannot spot any zombies when looking through the windows. Take extreme caution, though.

Barricading Entrances: This is useful for when you want to keep the zombies out for a long period of time. When making barracades, it is understandable that there will be a lot of noise. This is only from the tools that are being used. Changing the setting of the action to slowly and quiet would only work if there are tools that are quiet in the supplies menu. Making a building secure or fortified will add a bonus to moral and bravery since they think that they are untouchable. Wouldn't you?

Creating A Distraction: This is useful for if you want to try to test your guns, thin the numbers on the street, or even try to draw attention from another building. Making a ruckus is useful for drawing in a small to medium sized group to the building. Playing music fromthe stereo is useful for drawing in a medium to a large group of zombiez. Starting a bonfire is when you don't want to be anywhere near the building for a while. It can draw large hordes of zombies from all over the map. It is recommended to do this before wanting to breach a major building if you have the time and resources.

Repairing A Vehicle (Road Kill): This is only used when you have the vehicle and a required vehicle part. It would take some time but once you have the car up and running, you can beat the game.

Modifying Items: This is best used with an engineer or someone else who is great at modifying items. The only use for this is for making items better at what they do. It uses scrap, though.

Searching The Location: This is useful for anything. You can find many things in a building which can be usefull like food, tools, and weapons.

Making Traps: If you are planning on leaving an unsecured building for a while, it is recomended to set up traps so you wont have to go through the trouble of having to assault the building again. The most damaging trap is called the spike and cage trap. It deals a high amount of damage and makes the zombie immobile.

Producing Ammunition (No Survivors): This is best used for supplying your automatic rifles so you wont have to get up close and personal with as many zombies as before. The ammo supplied is usually divisible by 7.
Challenges/Goals/Achievements
I have decided to create my own form of challenges in which you can try to beat. They are listed below in coresponding game modes. You can also try them in different game modes, if they apply. A little bit more of a sense of acomplishment. Besides, these aren't disabled if you used the customizer. ;D

Added Details
There are three sizes for zombie groups

small: 1-9

large: 10-39

Horde: 40-infinity

When breaching, you will get some notifications on how many zombies are inside:

The entire place seems quiet: 0

A handful of zombies: 1-5

A half dozen or maybe more: 6-10

Bashing in the doors, we're completely surrounded: 11-infinity

Buildings can only be overran when you are playing on No Survivors. This is to create a sort of balance so you would want to clear out every building. I know little about buildings being overran since I have not taken the time to study the buildings which were. Those I can say that they have been neglected, they have a large amount of zombies outside, and they usually occur every 4-6 days.

Having two survivors in differing levels of productivity asigned to the same job is not recommended. Jealousy and pride can take over and cause relationships to redden.

Feasts can only occur after the sun sets and before the sun rises (6:00 PM - 6:00 AM).

Chess sets can help imrove intellegence, but if only two survivors want to play, relationships can dwindle if only one wants to play. It is recommended to scrap chess sets whenever possible.

Bottles of spirts are difficult to get rid of. When consumed, the survivors feel a massive sense of bravery, but they skills are greatly dwindled. The effects last for a few hours.

Accoring to one of the title pictures, the syringe has a 70% chance of making a survivor immune to the disease. One can only assume that the other 30% didn't make it.

If one of your survivors on Road Kill or Deadline is highly attentive to details, the little girl who knocks on your door will be discovered to have been bitten.

If you ignore the family and send them away, they will comeback with better weapons.

This is one of the only times which you have officially beaten the game in No Survivors:

Oh! I thought about it, but then I realized that I made this as a guide for playing the game, not a walkthrough. Through mixing and matching the strategies on the guide, I'm confident that some people will be able to find the achievements just a bit easier.

Besides, how hard can it be when all you have to do is collect food, fight off infection, treat wounds, find medicine, find ammo, find weapons, find tools, find backpacks, find buildings, secure those buildings, fortify the ones that have already been secured, fight off hordes of zombies, fix cars, find helicopters, search for greenhouses, search for police stations, search for ammo factory, and make sure that everyone's sane.

It's quite simple, really.

Oh, you mean the ones on the game's front page, or the achievements thread on the forums? I have decided to not include the 100+ achievements since they were mostly that guy's idea. He should be getting the "veiws" not me.

"Steam ach's guide?" I'm not that good with slang or abreviations, sorry. Also, thanks!

cheers for the guide. its a great way to ease into it, since there is no *real* tutorial in it :) its much appreciated. (be awesome if you added steam ach's guide as well as your own but STILL AWESOME)
