Basic heist information
Released on 29 May 2014 as a free DLC, Shadow Raid is a one-day heist involving the PAYDAY Gang infiltrating a highly-fortified Murkywater warehouse at 4:00am. With a high-risk, high-reward design, Shadow Raid eventually became the go-to stealth job for those that have become proficient at quietly completing Bank Heist.

Crime.net details
"Gage wants us to hit a military storage depot by the docks. Quiet job. Recon and a little light lifting." -Bain offering the contract

"The hardware that Gage moves falls off the back of trucks. Specifically, army trucks. Murkywater has a bonded warehouse down at the old wharf. See what sort of crap they're shipping back." -Bain's voice message

Murkywater has a bonded warehouse down at the old wharf. See what sort of crap they're shipping back.

>>Break into the warehouse undetected
>>Steal anything valuable you can find
>>Remember, there is no plan B
>>Escape with the loot

Bain's plan
This is all about stealth. Gage wants you to silently enter this depot, grab what you can and get out. The important part? Do NOT set off the alarm. If you do, I'm pulling you out.

This warehouse is Murkywater. Their business cards say 'private security' but they're really just a private army of mercenaries and looters. This warehouse is bonded, and Gage suspects it's full of stuff shipped back from Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever else those corn-fed crooks flex their muscle.

Stealth is a requirement.

Preplanning
Preplanning is a feature available in certain heists, not including the classics, that allows you to purchase additional assets and choose from a small depository of drawing tools to use on a map of the heist.

Favours and how to use them
Favours are little things that convince associates of the PAYDAY Gang, or, more specifically, low-lifers who don't make much, to do things for us. These are not affected by difficulty. Certain heists may give more or less preplanning favours. In Shadow Raid, you are granted 8 favours.

Favours can be spent on optional commissary, such as extra ammo, spycams, thermite, additional loot drop off points, glass cutters, C4 and many other things. More expensive, difficult-to-acquire elements will generally cost you more favours. Only the player who placed the asset will pay for it using their spending money.

For instance, you may want to buy some thermite to get beyond those pesky metal grates, or perhaps a few additional spycams to help mark out guards in advance. Regardless of your situation, there is almost always something avalable for you to buy with favours, thus making them an invaluable asset in scoring a substantial PAYDAY.

Loot drop off information
The van
By default, you have your standard, run-of-the-mill van that acts as both a drop off point and, upon securing enough bags (3/5/7/9/12), your get out of jail free card. It spawns in one of two locations, which also affects the crew's spawning location, being either by the sidewalk or next to the outer warehouse wall. The usual method of opening the van's doors is by bagging any piece of loot, although raising the alarm has the same effect.

The boat zip-line
A preplanning favour, the boat zip-line acts as a way to attach one bag and have it secured "on its own". From the moment you attach a bag to the zip-line, to when it's secured and to the moment when the zip-line returns, the entire process takes 15 seconds (or a quarter of a minute) to complete.

Notes
  • If you place the thermal paste on the sidewalk of compound, it is possible to, should the case be open, take some paste through the wall. It is recommended you jump on the red explosive barrel (to the right, one barrel above ground) when attempting to grab thermite.
  • Thermal paste takes 10 seconds to burn through a metal grate.

Tips
  • Thermite can be used to gain safe passage in and out of the interior warehouse by using the sewers. A more common use of the sewers is to safely move loot, although loot can be thrown underneath the metal grates with or without thermite.
  • A maximum of 4 bags of Money can be collected outside, equal to about 8% of the total value of all loot. For this reason, it is recommended to place the dumpster loot drop off in a location closer to an interior warehouse entrance, such as the waterfront.
  • Due to the limited number of pagers and few civilians, it is not advised to waste favours by purchasing body bag cases. Instead, bring your own body bag case and/or avoid wasting your body bags.
Methods of entry
Shadow Raid offers several paths to gaining access to the compound, including both the interior and exterior parts. This section details 13 possible methods of entry.

#1: Roof ladder
At the side of the warehouse, you'll find an exterior ladder that leads up to a rooftop vantage point. You can climb this ladder, jump across the abandoned south building roof and land on the roof of the warehouse.

#2: Main gate
By jumping past the main gate guard, you can quickly get back into cover and gain an immediate headstart. Bonus: Not being detected will also impress other players.

#3: Yard ladder
This one is for the thrill seekers, as not only does it require you to even be in this specific area of the yard in the first place, but requires you to climb the ladder without being seen. If you're currently outside, this is a good method to quickly get to the roof.

#4: Containers
Near the van's spawn location, you'll find a set of conveniently placed set of stairs. By climbing them, it will take approximately ~8 seconds to reach the top, at which point you'll notice that you can overlook a majority of the exterior warehouse without the risk of detection. Get a running start and jump off the edge of the balcony, ideally landing on the double-stacked containers. Afterwards, you can slowly descend to the ground floor.

#5: Ladder v2
Similar to the first entrance method, this completely different method involves the use of that exact ladder. Climb it and, upon reaching the top, jump off the very edge and land on the container.

#6: Glass (noise!)
Though you CAN physically break this glass and enter the warehouse with that method, there is a high chance that a nearby guard (approx. ~12 metres) will hear the sound of glass breaking and immediately become alerted. In addition to this, any guard who just so happens to see it will also become alerted.

#7: Exterior door
A door that can be opened by either picking its lock, using the OVE9000 Saw or placing a shaped charge.

#8: Ladder (random)
A ladder that has a low chance of spawning, this makes for a reliable way to get from the exterior to the interior warehouse, and vice versa. A guard may also spawn here, regardless of whether or not the ladder spawns with him.

#9: Manhole (exterior)
By opening up the manhole that is nearest to the abandoned south building's ladder and using some thermite on the metal grate, you can use the manhole that grants access to the exterior yard, next to a red container and a door leading to the interior warehouse.

#10: Manhole (interior)
You'll need another piece of thermal paste for this, so run back up there and grab the last piece, eh? Continue on through the sewers and open up the last metal grate, gaining access to a crowbar and the ground floor of the interior warehouse.

#11: Manhole (interior) v2
This is essentially the same thing but on a different grate; though this one only requires one piece of thermal paste to acquire access to the interior warehouse. Go to the waterfront and apply some thermite on the metal grate. Wait 10 seconds and you'll have a much easier time getting in and out, not to mention hauling loot through that method (especially if you have the waterfront dumpster drop off point).

#12: Manhole (interior) v3
Metal grate, again. You know the drill. Get yourself over to the far side of the warehouse (the one with the flying fox), climb down the manhole and get that thermally conductive polymerizable liquid matrix chemical compound on the grate.

#13: Ventilation system
Using the abandoned south building's ladder, you can access the side of the roof, jump down onto the small exterior ventilation system, then the next one and, lastly, the large exterior ventilation system around the corner. Move to the one that is second nearest to the railing, grab the very edge of the catwalk and jump, gaining access to two doors, both leading straight into the first floor of the interior warehouse.
Loot
Loot, one of the most prominent aspects of Shadow Raid, comes in many different shapes and sizes. As such, this section is part 1 of 2 in detailing everything related to loot.

Maximum theoretical number of any given type of loot
The minimum total amount of loot is 21, while the maximum is 25, averaging 23 bags of loot per run, depending on crate RNG and whether or not the helicopter brings in an additional Murkywater shipping container.

This table documents the absolute maximum hypothetical amount of a given loot type, and may ignore the maximum amount of loot when factoring in the guaranteed amount of loot for each type:

Notes
  • Only one player can bag a piece of the Samurai Armor at a time. If multiple players attempt to simultaneously bag the Samurai Armor, the game will favour the player who started the interaction first and, out of these players, who has the lowest ping, starting with the host.
Tips
  • When moving a heavy bag (such as Gold) through the sewers and up the ladder, it is recommended to get to the very top, toss the bag and climb up. This ensures you don't have any problems with climbing the ladder while carrying a bag.

Civilians
Shadow Raid has a very limited number of civilians, detailed below.

Types
Foreman
The foreman is the most abundant civilian type, with approximately 3 of them who can be seen roaming around the cargo yard and limited parts of the interior warehouse.

Lead foreman
The lead foreman is a rare civilian who wears an orange jumpsuit, a yellow hard hat and a striped outfit. There is only one lead foreman, who has the added bonus of always carrying a keycard. The lead foreman roams the same areas as the regular foreman.

Guards
Guards are NPCs that patrol the interior and exterior areas of the warehouse. This section details each guard variant in Shadow Raid, as well as stationed patrols.

Amount
On the Overkill difficulty and below, there are 10 guaranteed guards on the entire map:
  • Between 5 and 6 roamers in the exterior warehouse, including 1 by the waterfront; an additional 0-2 guards may spawn by the main gate and/or dumpster.
  • Between 4 and 5 roamers in the interior warehouse, including a stationary guard in the security room.
On the Mayhem difficulty and above, there are 12 guaranteed guards on the entire map:
  • Between 6 and 7 roamers in the exterior warehouse, including 1 by the waterfront and 1 in the alley; an additional 0-2 guards may spawn by the main gate and/or dumpster.
  • Between 5 and 6 roamers in the interior warehouse, including a stationary guard in the security room.
Guard variants
Washington Security guard
A standard white-suited Washington Security guard. They are typically found patrolling the exterior warehouse. They lack body armour and, thus, have low health, making them easy to eliminate.

Murkywater PMC
Murkywater PMCs, also known as murkies or murky guards, are soldiers from the private military contractor Murkywater that patrol around the interior and limited parts of the exterior warehouse.

Stationed patrols
These are patrol routes which are added in addition to the guards not restricted to a specific patrol route.

#1: By the main gate.
This Washington Security guard may spawn stationed by the main gate, with or without stationed patrol #2.

#2: By a dumpster in the cargo yard.
This Washington Security guard may spawn stationed by a dumpster in the cargo yard, with or without stationed patrol #1.

#3: By the waterfront.
This Washington Security guard can be seen stationed next to a potential exterior ladder spawning location by the waterfront.

This guard may also spawn roaming the waterfront, instead of being stationed in this one location. This will always happen if the exterior door providing access to the basement of the interior warehouse is open by default:

#4: In the alley.
This Washington Security guard will constantly walk between the dumpster next to the water and the abandoned south building ladder. If playing on the Mayhem difficulty or above, a guard is guaranteed to be patrolling this route.
Murkywater shipping containers
The Murkywater shipping containers, or simply containers, are locked objects found in the exterior warehouse, containing Money. Only the red containers can be opened, and this is done by interacting with them for a base time of 0.5 seconds.

Containers can be opened from both the exterior and interior. 6 out of the 8 containers can be opened from the exterior on either side.

A maximum of 4 containers can contain Money. 3 of them can contain up to 2 bags of Money.

List

Container #8

Container #9

Notes
  • 4 minutes and 45 seconds after Bain first mentions the containers, a helicopter will send a broadcast to the warehouse. The helicopter then spawns 10 seconds later, bringing in either additional guards or the 9th container.
Crates
Crates are locked containers that contain loot, requiring a crowbar to open.

There are between 9 and 10 crates. 9 of them appear in the interior warehouse, while the 10th (brought in by the helicopter; see section 'Helicopter') appears in the exterior warehouse. Crates spawn in the same locations.

Crates can contain an Artifact, Coke, Gold, Money or nothing. The chance of any of these 5 outcomes is an even 20% for the first 9 crates. Crate #10 always contains an Artifact.

Note: Nearby loot should be within about 4 metres of the crate, and typically on the same floor.

List
#1: In the main storage area, somewhat hidden. This crate does not spawn with any nearby loot.

#2: In the main storage area, behind unopenable crates. This crate may spawn with any of the following nearby loot:
  • Money

#3: In the main storage area, adjacent to unopenable crates. This crate may spawn with any of the following nearby loot:

#6: In the main storage area, behind a truck. This crate does not spawn with any nearby loot.

#7: In the ground floor small goods storage. This crate may spawn with any of the following nearby loot:
  • Assault Rifles
  • Coke

#8: On the first floor, adjacent to unopenable crates and near the yellow cages. This crate does not spawn with any nearby loot.

#9: On the first floor, inside a yellow cage. This crate may spawn with any of the following nearby loot:
  • Painting
  • Money

#10: Inside the shipping container brought in by the helicopter. This crate does not spawn with any nearby loot.
Yellow cages
The yellow cages, also known as yellow gates, are a set of four small encasements that appear in groups of two on the ground and first floors of the interior warehouse. They can be accessed through one of any of the following methods:
  • OVE9000 Saw
  • Keycard
  • Drill
Due to the overwhelmingly limited number of keycards on the map, it is wise to not use them on these yellow gates. Instead, when it's safe, place a drill. Due to its three times higher chance of jamming compared to regular drills, it is highly advised to wait nearby until the drill is done. If it jams, repair it from the left side to avoid unintentionally using a keycard.

The drill will always take either 60 seconds, 51 seconds (Drill Sawgeant) or 42 seconds (*Drill Sawgeant).

The contents of the yellow cages varies with each cage:
  • Ground floor, left cage: Nothing
  • Ground floor, right cage: Assault Rifles or nothing
  • First floor, left cage: Crate
  • First floor, right cage: Money, Painting, both or nothing
The Vault
The Vault, also known as the 'Samurai Armor Vault', or simply 'vault', is a uniquely-designed safe that contains four pieces of Oda Nobunaga's[en.wikipedia.org] personal armour.

The vault requires two keycards to open, with the second keycard inserted within 10 seconds of the first, or else it permanently locks itself for the remainder of the heist.

Unlike civilians, guards will notice the vault open. For this reason, it is recommended to exercise caution before opening the vault, preferably doing so when the guards are far away.
Cameras
This section details everything related to the security cameras in Shadow Raid.

Operator
All cameras are operated by a Murkywater PMC from the security room, located on the first floor of the interior warehouse:

Spawning locations
Exterior
#1: On the right of the cargo gate doorway.

#2: In the cargo yard, next to a ladder leading to the roof.

Keycard locations
All sources of keycards.

#1: The security room Murkywater guard
This specific guard has a 100% guaranteed chance to drop a keycard upon his inevitable domination or demise.

Being in a secluded location, yet having a pager and up to 480 HP (if alerted), this keycard source has a medium level of danger. Note that NPCs can see into the room through the open door.

#2: The civilian
This civilian will always drop a keycard upon being killed or cable-tied. He wears a yellow hardhat and an orange jumpsuit, allowing you to quickly identify him. He can wander almost anywhere on the map without limitations and will often idle in one place for 15 seconds or longer.

As he randomly wanders the warehouse, there are few times when it's safe to take the keycard, making this a circumstantially difficult keycard to obtain.

#3: The cafeteria
This keycard always appears to the side of the oven, on top of the kitchen worktop. It will only ever spawn on the Hard difficulty and below.

Being in such a dark location where no NPC walks into, it's generally the easiest keycard source.
Exterior warehouse trucks
There are a total of four trucks in the front of the courtyard, near the main gate, which can each be interacted with to cause the truck to repeatedly sound its horn and flash its lights for up to 15 seconds.

The disturbance prompts a nearby guard to inspect the truck, who will correct it after approximately 3 seconds. Trucks can be used as a distraction to lure nearby stationary guards away from undesirable locations.

Helicopter
Entering the compound starts a 5-minute countdown until the compound receives a militia broadcast from an approaching helicopter. This countdown normally starts as soon as Bain first mentions the Murkywater shipping containers. However, if entering the compound via the main gate, this line is delayed by 10 seconds, although the countdown is unaffected.

As soon as the broadcast plays, the helicopter spawns 10 seconds later, bringing in either:
  • 2-4 additional Murkywater PMC guards, depending on difficulty. Normal to Overkill brings in 2 guards, with this number raised to 4 on Mayhem and above.
  • A red Murkywater shipping container with a crate inside it, guaranteed to contain an artifact.

Being in a certain location on the helipad when the helicopter spawns will guarantee it brings in the container, instead of additional guards. The following image manifests such location:
Vice-versa, standing in the drop zone of the container will force the helicopter to bring in additional guards.

Bag stashing locations
This section details commonly known, and lesser known, locations to stash bags in, whether it be loot or bodies.

Note: Ideally, a stashing location should be 100% safe and unable to be detected by NPCs. In the event that it is not, it will be noted as such.

List
#1: On the roof, behind the stairwell. No NPCs are ever in visual range of this stashing location, making it one of the safest locations to stash both loot and bodies in.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?
None
Yes
Yes

#2: In the corner of the server room. This stashing location is only recommended for loot, not bodies, since the cabinets provide little cover from the window, a guard stationary location.

Additionally, if the exterior walkway door is opened, guards are guaranteed to detect any bags stashed in this location while walking through the door.
Risk of detection

Bodies?
High
Yes
No

#3: In the first floor small goods storage, behind a stack of cardboard boxes. This stashing location can be used for both loot and bodies. No NPCs ever detect bags stashed here, provided they are not on the edge of the boxes.

Note that it is highly discouraged to leave the exterior walkway door open for prolonged periods, as opening it provides guards a very high chance of detecting bags stashed here.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?

Yes
Yes

#4: Next to the window and an unopenable crate in the side access room.In-between the crate and the wall is a stashing location that is always undetectable, both for loot and bodies.

This location is most commonly used for bodies, especially if not using the window to move loot. However, if guards are patrolling through here, then loot can be stashed in this location too.

Yes

#5: In the ground floor small goods storage, behind stacked, unopenable crates.Loot and bodies stashed in this location are always undetectable, even if they are stashed on the edge of the crates (provided they aren't too far off). With its close proximity to a manhole, it is a popular stashiing location for those moving loot through the sewers.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?

Yes

#6: In the ground floor small goods storage, behind stacked, unopenable crates. This stashing location is similar to location #5. However, the key difference is that bags are easier to be detected, and thus must be stashed closer to the middle to minimise the chance of detection.

This location can be a viable alternative option for those moving loot through the sewers, although it is heavily recommended to use location #5 instead.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?

#7: In the main storage area, behind crate #1.This stashing location can be used for both loot and bodies, and any bags stashed directly behind the crate are always undetectable.

Loot?
Bodies?

Yes

#8: In the main storage area, in-between stacked, unopenable crates and the wall and near crate #2.This stashing location is more suited for loot than it is for bodies, due to the size of body bags and limited cover. Bags must be stashed closer to the unopenable crates, not the wall, else NPCs will very likely detect them through the crack.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?
Medium
Yes
No

#9: In the corner of the main storage area, near stashing location #9.Both loot and bodies can be stashed here, although bodies are recommended due to the space available and the fact that loot would already be stashed in location #8.

Because of its distance to any potential threat, this location can be considered a safer alternative to location #8.
Risk of detection
Loot?
Bodies?
Extremely low
Yes
Yes

#10: In the ground floor small office, under the desk.As civilians often patrol this room, this stashing location is curated for loot, although bodies can be stashed here too.

The ideal, specific stashing location for each desk varies: While the desk nearest to the yellow cages favours the corner nearest to the wall on the side of the spawn road, the desk nearest to the window favours its middle.

Bodies can also be stashed next to the cabinets, on the side of the desk nearest to the window, greatly reducing the chance of detection by civilians passing through, while also increasing the chance of the stationary guard on the other side of the window detecting it.

Additionally, while guards do not patrol this room, nor do they see under the desks through the open doors or window, civilians are likely to detect bodies if they are not stashed properly.

Other notes
  • Some spawns are dependent on difficulty; they may only spawn on a certain difficulty or below/above. For example, the cafeteria keycard only ever spawns on the Hard difficulty and below, whereas the sewage crowbar only ever spawns on the Overkill difficulty and above.
  • Raising the alarm at any point, on any difficulty, will give you 60 seconds to secure the minimum amount of loot and escape. Failing to escape will cause the heist to end and add 1 to your FBI Files' failed Shadow Raid attempts statistic.
  • On the Overkill difficulty and above, if stealth is broken and a player nears the side walk, three Murkywater PMCs will open a door and proceed to open fire. Because of this, it is recommended to deploy a trip mine by the door and set it to explosive mode so that these guards are dealt with without being given a chance to harm the crew.
Trivia
  • As mentioned by Bain at the very beginning of Meltdown, Shadow Raid takes place at 4:00am. This implies that Shadow Raid takes place before Meltdown. ("Got memories of this place at 4:00am.") Vlad also mentions this heist in his contract briefing. ("I heard about the outstanding job you did sneaking into that Murkywater warehouse.")
  • The soundtracks, And Now We Wait[soundcloud.com] and And Now We Run,[soundcloud.com] are each references to the waiting aspect of stealth and the running to the escape when the alarm is raised, respectively.
  • On the streets, near the van, there are a total of 14 street lamps that, if shot, visually remove light from both the bulb and the tarmac.
  • The 132nd gameplay hint displayed on the loading screen features Shadow Raid in its image: "You get detected easier if you are carrying a bag."
