Student Needs and Learning 101
By tristan.angeles
This guide will show you the basics of student needs and motivation, and how they affect your students learning. Managing student needs is one of the most important(if not the most) aspect of the game, and can make or break a school.

Student Needs
Your student's needs are the most important stats in the game, and they determine how motivated your students are to learn, and how happy they are with your school. A lot of the buildings you will build in the game are there to maintain student needs. There are seven different student needs, and they fluctuate throughout the course of a school day.

Needs
Decreases by
Increases by
Food
Decreases with time.
Increases by eating in cafeteria, using vending machine, and water fountain.
Energy
Decreases by moving and doing Physical activities.
Sitting down in chairs during free time or class.
Fun
Decreases with time.
Increases by hanging out in common area or using the ff. special rooms during free time: Library, Science Lab, Art Room, Music Room, Computer Room.
Hygiene
Decreases by walking in unfloored tiles, walking in dirty tiles, tiles with pee, poo, cigarette butts.
Increases by washing hands in sinks.
Bladder
Decreases with time. Rates are different per student.
Increases by using toilet cublcle(girls and boys), or urinals(boys only).
Bowel
Decreases with time. Rates are different per student.
Increases by using cubicles(boys and girls).
Safety
Decreases with time randomly every 15 game minutes if student feels unsafe. Chance is determined by a ratio of delinquents and total number of students.
Increases by chance randomly every 15 game minutes if student feels safe.

You can check out the overall state of your student's needs by looking at the the Overall Student Info panel accessible from the top bar by clicking on the student icon.

Student Needs are Time Sensitive!

From the table above, you may notice that a lot of the student needs decrease with time. What this means is that the distance between your students, and the facilities needed to maintain those needs are very important. It is a very good idea to make sure that facilities like cafeterias, are easily accessible to students during lunch, or free time. If class starts before students are able to eat then they won't be able to eat at all until the next free time.

In Summary:

1) Students have several needs that determine how motivated they are to learn.
2) Student needs decrease differently, and your school must have the right facilities to maintain those needs.
3) You can check the overall state of your student's need by constantly checking the overall student info panel.
4) Lastly, student needs are time sensitive! Make sure that facilities are near students so that they can easily access them.

Student Motivation

As mentioned in the previous section, needs determine how motivated your students are to learn. Your student's motivation is an aggregate of bonuses and penalties from your needs, so you'll notice that as student's needs increase so does motivation and vice versa. Hey it's hard to study when your stomach is bothering you and you need to go to the bathroom right?

As a simple rule, keep your student's motivation high by keeping their needs high and your students should be passing through high school faster than they can learn their ABCs. (Well assuming that they are in class but that will be discussed later)

When Life Gets In The Way of Studies(Said No One Ever)

Although needs have the largest effect on motivation events in school can motivate or de motivate your students. These events are:

Sickness

Getting sick will make your student feel bad, and they will temporarily lose some of their motivation to study. This penalty will last until the student's sickness is cured.

Getting Scolded

When a student is scolded by the principal or a monitor they will feel down, and will temporarily lose their motivation until end of the day. The more they are scolded, the more motivation they lose.

Faliing In and Out Of Love

Sometimes some of your students will confess their love for another student. There are two outcomes to this: the love is accepted or the love is rejected. Students who are rejected will temporarily lose motivation until end of the day. Students whose love is accepted, will sometimes hangout with their significant others and gain a temporary motivation boost.

Keep An Eye Out for Motivation

Motivation plays a big role in student's learning. If you see that your students are failing, then it's good to first check the overall state of your student's motivation through the overall student info panel.

In Summary:

1) Student needs determine a student's motivation
2) Some events in the game temporarily give bonuses or penalties to students motivation
3) It's a good idea to check your students motivation if they are failing.

Student Learning
As the principal of a school you are tasked with making sure that your students get the education that they deserve! Your school will be evaluated based on your students passing rate(among other things), which is determined after a year's final examination.

Subject Learning

Subject learning points accumulate throughout the year during class hours, and sometimes when they use special rooms during their free time. The chance for a student getting learning points from class is based primarily on the following stats:

1) Student Motivation
2) Teacher's Teaching Stat for the subject

So it is for the best to keep student motivation high(by maintaining needs), and hiring the best teachers to increase the chance of your students learning.

Simple right? Well, it is a little bit more complicated than that since there are a few things that can have an effect on your students learning:

1) Being outside of class during class hours
2) Class size

Being Outside of Class During Class Hours

There are some instances when class has started but your students are outside of the classroom. For example, going to the toilet for bathroom breaks, on the way to classroom from the classroom to the cafeteria. Students who are outside of the classroom during class hours still learn but only get a fraction of the maximum amount of learning points for the subject during the day. This means that it is very important that student's classrooms are easily reached by students from frequently used areas like the cafeteria, common area, and toilets.

Currently if there are multiple zones of the same kind, for example 2 cafeterias, students and staff will not always chooses the zone nearest to them. We are still working on this, so for now it is best to have zones which are accessible to all classrooms so that students learning won't suffer due to long travel times.

Class Size

There is an ideal class size for classrooms which is currently at 25 students. Classrooms with class sizes larger than this will get a penalty to the students learning chance, while classes less than ideal will have a bonus. You can check if your classes have a bonus or penalty due to class size by going to reports>classrooms.

Passing the Year

As mentioned above there is a final examination during the end of the year. To pass a year level students must pass at least three subjects. Passing a subject is randomly determined based on the student's subject learning points. If your students are failing, it's a good idea to check the exam results and see which subjects they have failed in and make improvements the following school year.

Well that's the basics of student learning, there are a few more topics to cover but in summary:

1) The chance for a student to pass a subject is based on subject learning points gained during class hours.
2) Learning points gained are based on students individual motivation and the subject teacher's teaching stat.
3) Students only get a fraction of learning if outside of the classroom during class hours.
4) Students get learning bonuses and penalties based on class size.

Assigning Students to Classrooms
Classrooms and Student Chairs

Classrooms in the game serve to group students. All students inside a classroom will have similar class schedules, and will get the same bonuses and penalties from the class size, and teachers teaching the current subject. What determines a classroom's maximum student number, is the number of student chairs in the classroom. You can check if you have enough chairs for each year level by hovering on the student icon on the top panel as shown below:

From the screenshot, you can see the number of students per year level on the left, while the number of available student chairs is on the right. If there are more students than student chairs then that means that some of your students will be unassigned, and will not be gaining learning points until they are assigned to a classroom.

You can also go to reports>classrooms to check which classrooms don't have enough seat as shown on the screenshot below:

Unassigned Students

As you can see from the screenshot above, in the classrooms column there are 'unassigned' students. There are a few reasons why students will be unassigned:

  • Students passed a year level but the next year level doesn't have enough seats
  • You accepted student grants but there are not enough seats.
  • You removed seats.

So there you have it, make sure that you always have enough student chairs in your school. Now let's say you have built additional chairs, problem solved right? No, you need to assign the unassigned students to the classroom first. You can do this by going to classroom reports again, and clicking on the up and down arrow icon under class size column for the unassigned students. The following panel will pop up:

From here you can choose which classrooms you want to assign your unassigned students too by clicking on the up and down arrows next to the unassgined group.

In Summary
:

1) The amount of student chairs in a classroom determine the maximum amount of students a classroom can hold.
2) You can assign, and manage the number of students in a classroom by going to reports>classrooms
