How to install the "SE Protocol"
By Loic Tomatot
This guide will allow you to make the se:// protocol functional, allowing you when you share URL links with your friends, to click on it or open it from a browser to automatically open Space Engine and lead you to the corresponding location.

How to install "se:// protocol" ?
So we will see how to install this protocol (sorry for some French screenshots XD)
Open the game normally, then go to Settings then General and you will see the "Register se:// protocol" button at the bottom.

If you try to install it by clicking on it, you will get this error message :

This means that Space Engine does not have write access to system files. We must therefore give him the right to do so.
Several ways are possible but the simplest is to:
- Quit Space Engine and go to the Space Engine files (in theory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEngine\system").

- Then right-click on the Space Engine executable > Run as administrator. Confirm the execution and let Space Engine open (for my part it worked so don't hesitate to submit your problems to me in comments).

- Then go back to Settings > General and click again on the "Register se:// protocol" button. You will then normally receive confirmation of the installation.

- Finally, restart Space Engine normally, and that's it ! You are ready to open a place shared with friends directly from a browser !
Now, how to use it ?
Sending is relatively simple.
Simply open the list of your saved places and click on Share > Copy URL to clipboard at the bottom. Then, share on any media you want (You can also integrate them in several other ways like in HTML but I won't detail their use)

For you to practice, I put a link to a nebula close to Sagittarius A* :

The most easy way to use it : Copy the link, then open Space Engine, go to Planetarium > Load > Add > Paste URL from clipboard. It will be saved as a location.

After the location is saved, you can launch and display it. There you go ! You can also open it on a browser.

Thanks you very much and have a nice exploration on Space Engine !

@mystic I did a file that you can run to fix this issue (because it doesn't seem to be enough anymore to fix the issue until they fix them)

It doesn't work for me, even when running as administrator

I confirm we need to have Steam lunch as admnistrator. I also run SpaceEngine as administrator too for is work.

Ouch, loading location by clicking a link indeed breaks out setting. Added to a buglist.

Wait, you don't need to register protocol to be able to share locations and import them using SE interface. What protocol did, is allowing to launch SE when you click se:// url in the browser and automatically load that location.

For example, if you registered protocol successfully, try to click link there (steam does not allow to share se:// link):

Apparently you need to run Steam as administrator to register se:// protocol. I will look to another ways to do that.
