T-34-85

The definitive variant of the T-34. The arrival of heavier german tanks with bigger guns and stronger armor was challenging Soviet tanks. The T-43, designed to supplant the T-34, had insufficient armor and lower speed, but a stronger 85mm gun. To simplify production and retain the T-34s advantages, the new turret was modified and installed into a modified T-34 hull. This new vehicle, the T-34-85, while inferior in armor and firepower compared to the best german tanks, it was much cheaper to produce, which allowed the Soviets to greatly boost their numbers while retaining enough firepower to defeat the opposition. Even after being supplanted by the T-44 and the T-54, the T-34-85 was supplied to the Soviet Union's various allies and even today can be found in armored conflicts.
