Apollo - Ascent & TLI walkthrough
By High speed, low drag
In this guide I will walk through the ascent part, the TLI process, and later I will elaborate on getting into the Lunar orbit. I will try to be as straight forward as possible.
It's highly recommended that you complete Apollo academy before trying this (though exam is not necessary).

I - LEO (Low Earth Orbit)
  1. Load Saturn V free play scenario.

NOTE: If your game crashes during loading of any Apollo missions, try this:
    A) Restart your computer. System uptime seems to affect this game. If it doesn't help, then
    B) Go to Configure under Effects in the game settings, and set Texture Quality to "Half Res". Also make sure Earth Textures are set to "Low".
    C) If it still crashes, trying lowering all possible settings.

  2. Run the Boost Preparation checklist and go through it. Certain actions aren't tracked by the game (such as radio check) and will require you to press a small "PRO" button in in the upper right corner list.

  3. Timewarp using number keys. Once you liftoff, run the Boost checklist. While there are specific timings for the switches in the checklist text, it's not necessary to follow them yet (and they are desynched with the in-game timings anyway). You can either try and follow them, or just activate all of this stuff at the last minute/after engine cutoff. I haven't noticed any issues with either strategy.

  4. Once you are in the parking orbit, run and complete the Insertion checklist.
II - TLI (Trans-Lunar Injection)
  1. Input V37E 00E into AGC to clear it (this step isn't completely necessary but can prevent any problems).

  2. Open the Communication menu (C by default) and choose "Request TLI time".

UPD: With 0.45 update, you no longer get this option. You'll now have to open the "TLI burn planner" from the same menu and configure your trajectory as desired. Play with settings until you get something good that gets you near the Moon. Then press execute to load that data into AGC. I'll revisit this part in the future.

  3. Run the Trans-Lunar Injection checklist, and go through it until you get to the AGC input.

  4. Input V37E 15E. The TLI program with time values should now appear on the display. If values are zeroes, try doing step 2 now, clear AGC and try loading TLI program again.
Press PRO on AGC if values are there.

  5. Press PRO on AGC again here.

  6. The countdown for TLI burn will now start in the 1st value. First two digits there is the amount of minutes.

  7. Press PRO on the "Set up the P15 using the AGC" in the upper right and proceed with the checklist until you get to the "Wait for the burn" part.

  8. S-IVB will slowly change its attitude to prepare for the burn, so be careful with timewarping here, as it will prevent S-IVB from maneuvering. Make sure to stop the warp at least 3 minutes before the burn to let the stage orient itself.

  9. Once the burn is underway, you can monitor the progress using the 2nd value (remaining deltav to burn).

  10. Once the burn is over, Press PRO on the "Wait for the burn" in the upper right and finish the rest of the checklist. Press PRO on AGC to enter idle mode.
III - LV Sep (Launch Vehicle Separation), T&D (Transposition and Docking)
I'm not gonna go in-depth here as it's covered by an academy lesson (maybe I'll add more to this later).

You can either complete "CSM separation - No LM" checklist if you don't care about Lunar Module and don't want any hassle, or go through more complex T&D checklists that will guide you to dock with LM and extract it.

Few tips for docking with LM:
  • You can ignore things like EMS and AGC input from the checklist and just do it completely manually for now.
  • Press F9 so you can have an aligned view of the activated COAS.
  • Make sure to roll the CSM so the target reticule on LM is T-shaped from your point of view.
  • You can make docking easier by cheating - press Backspace at any time to instantly cancel out any rotation. This will likely be removed at some point before release.

If you do dock, proceed with the rest of T&D checlicksts, and extract the LM via SIVB / LM SEP switch below AGC's keyboard. Feel free to turn the handle on the docking hatch, open it after waiting a bit (button shows up with C menu open), and switch to LM via F4. Set up LM via its own checklists by switching checklist menu to LM mode.
IV - LOI (Lunar Orbital Insertion) - TBD
This section is to be developed, but I hope you find the rest of the guide useful for now.
  1. After you separate from launch vehicle (and optionally dock with & extract the Lunar Module), press F3 for orbital map view. Use timewarp again (at button "0" - max value).

  2. You wanna wait until get close to the Moon's orbit.

The rest is TBD as this procedure isn't fully in the game yet.

You can try and get into the orbit yourself using SPS burn planner available in Communications menu.

Thanks for reading and I hope this is helpful. I'll update this guide over time as necessary, but don't expect it to be fully fleshed out until game's release as features get added and changed. I appreciate any feedback.
