Basic controls
The default controls are the arrow keys, with the space bar as the jump. Later, when you discover more characters, the controls for switching are 'Q' and 'E'. You can change this as you wish. The goal in Thomas Was Alone is to get to the portal, which moves you on to the next level. Certain challenges will be added as you progress, including deadly acid, more characters, and higher jumps. For the first level, the solution is self-explainatory.
When the narrator is speaking, the subtitles of what he is saying will be displayed underneath whatever character you have activated. If you change activation, then the words will move underneath the newly selected character.

Pressing the 'esc' key [by default] will bring you to the pause menu. From here, you can change the volume. To select different options, use the arrow keys [default[ to switch between the menus, and the space bar to activate. Pressing the 'esc' key again or selecting 'resume game' will close the pause menu.
Environment Challenges
Many new concepts will be thrown at you in this game. The ability to adapt to them is a skill that may be difficult to learn.
Some example concepts are:
tilted landscape [does nothing to alter in-game physics]

Deadly acid, as mentioned before

moving sections

Floating blocks and high jumps
Mental Challenges
The Majority of the puzzles in this game require outside-the-box thinking. This becomes increasingly important when dealing with more than one character; for example, Chris, who is introduced in level 1.1

Since Thomas' and Chris's abilities differ, it can be difficult to maneuver both to the exit. Combining their abilites, with Thomas helping Chris to the exit, and Chris reaching hard-to-get-to places, the puzzles are solvable.

A note:
Jumps are made higher by holding down the space bar [default] longer.
