I just won this achievement myself! Using discretion as opposed to bulling through did not occur to me, although I did turn down a few fights...
When I got to the rooftop, waiting for the cart, I had gathered several sawblades. I fired the blades when an attacking zombie was against a wall or fence- in theory, making the blade immediately recoverable. In practice, of course, I lost them in the wild fighting- luckily, my very last blade killing the very last zombie before my escape...
In the cemetery, before crossing the second fence, I got in close to the attackers so that they would divide their attacks between the Good Father Grigori and the Good Doctor Freeman.
Once I had access to cinder blocks, blades, and barrels, I got back into the fight!
Anybody seen The Omega Man with Charlton Heston? That's what Ravenholm brings to mind...
