Properties
First right click on DOOM II in your library and select "Properties"
Set Launch Options
Then click on "Set Launch Options"
<path to exe> %Command%
Here you can get Steam to launch whatever exe you want by including the path to that exe followed by %Command%

Download something like GZDoom and have the launch options set to something like
<path to exe> %Command%

The exact way that I have mine setup is like this:
"F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Ultimate Doom\\base\dosbox.exe" -iwad "F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Doom 2\base\doom2.wad" %Command%

I have GZDoom installed into my Ultimate Doom install folder (renamed to dosbox.exe) and then give it an iwad parameter to have it load the doom 2 wad. Depending on where everything is for you you'll want it to be different.

This was actually really helpful, thanks a bunch. Unity port is cool but it doesnt' hold a candle to prboom+ or gzdoom.

this is kind of pointless now considering that the new port works with the overlay right out of the box
