If I could add to your note, I've noticed that the game "resets" itself and regenerates the map (such as all grass turns lush green again in high traffic areas) to let everything be zero when the editor is left on. This typically is triggered by a year end or even just clicking a button such as the edict tool and then clicking it again to leave the edict list. To prevent this, I usually use the editor before the end of the game year to make changes and then promptly turn it back off.
