I like to design skins that work with the way the weapon is held and animated in game. When inspecting the sawed-off you flip it over - I wanted to place an illustration that carried over to both views. I could have drawn a dragon or snake that flowed across easily enough, but I opted for another creature - the scorpion.

I felt the scorpion fitted the sawed-off extremely well, because you buy it as a force buy against better equipped enemies who hunt you; while you lie in wait behind a corner to attack them at point-blank range.

I figured out I could tie the aesthetic to greek mythology and create another item to marry up with the AUG Stymphalian: In one greek tale, Orion, a hunter god was driven to hunt and kill every creature. Gaia the earth deity took umbrage with his plans and sent forth a giant scorpion which stung and killed Orion. Both the fallen Orion and Scorpion (scorpio) ended up as constellations.

The constellation of scorpio is indicated on the barrel. A curled-hook flourish appears throughout the design to loosely resemble a coiled up scorpion tail. Even the square hook pattern on the barrel reminded me of this - I just felt it fit the theme. The rest of the motifs and ornaments are inspired from greek pottery, just like the AUG.
