One of the first things to do is limit how much you use your spaceship for travel. It's a good idea to just land your spaceship on a designated landing pad at a settlement or something to save launch fuel.

Then, you should walk as much as possible. Any destination within 500u of your landing spot you should walk to. Use the analysis visor to check the distance of a target before flying or using an exocraft.

You need to stay safe while walking. Build upgrades to your exosuit mobility so you can run longer and fly higher. With enough upgrades you should be able to outrun any planetary predators. Try not to tick off the sentinels. Save often and bring projectile ammunition and a scatter blaster if you are on a planet with dangerous animals or sentinels.
