Engineer Rollouts
By nedoplatek
Rollouts are not only for Soldiers and Demomen. Belive or not, Engineers have their own way to get efficiently to the front. But Engineer's rollouts are significantly different though. Instead of focusing on how to make pogo with rockets or stickies, Engineer's focus is on fast, capable deployment of yourself and your buildings.

Introduction
To be effective as Engineer, you have to make sure your buildings are doing their jobs correctly without any flaw.
  • Sentry Gun should prevent from enemy to occupy a certain area and essentially, prevent them from capturing the objective.
  • Dispenser needs to be at front with your team, supporting your teammates with ammo and health.
  • Teleporter should be active at all time near some cover in a relatively calm area,
It takes some time to get all buildings up and upgrade. Rollouts in setup can help you out and prepare you and your buildings for the incomind fight.
Types of rollouts and their efficiency
The main goal of theese rollouts is to quickly transport you and your buildings to a desired spot before the gates open. You need to itemize your limited time and upgrade each building at it's max level. There are many ways how to rollout but I will mention only some of them ranked from best to least viable.

This rollout uses the advantage of switching between two Wrenches. As you can tell from it's name, you will need a Jag, the fastest wrench when it comes to getting that gear up. And the Eureka Effect, which will make your Teleporter cost 50% less to build and upgrade.
This rollout is used when preparing for defense. Setup time isn't required, but it helps.

Procedure:
Jag Effect rollout starts with Eureka Effect equipped, drop your Entrance and Dispenser in front of the spawn doors. You now want to setup Exit on front. After you've done this, build your Sentry gun there too, then use your Eureka Effect to teleport yourself back to the spawn.

Switch to the Jag and start upgrading your remaining buildings, more specifically Dispenser and Teleporter. Use the Resupply Locker to refill your metal.

Pick up your Dispenser and carry it trough your Teleporter. Place it to your favourite spot and, with the full metal capacity, use the remaining seconds to finally upgrade your Sentry gun, use the advantage of your Dispenser and Metal packs nearby. After you've successfully upgraded all your buildings to a level three, prepare for defending.

Summary:
This rollout, if executed right, shouldn't take more than 60 seconds, which is basically the lenght of average setup time. Combinating multiple wrenches is requirement for this rollout, make sure you have a loadout prepared for that.
Overall I think this particular rollout is the most efficient of them all. It takes some practice but I'm sure after a few games, you'll get used to it.

The standart rollout is mostly used by pub Engineer players simply because it's pretty simple. You won't need any binds or scrips, all you need is competent teammates, who won't pick your metal during setup time. This rollout works better when you choose a spot which is supplied by metal packs, mainly because this particular rollout is based around picking metal from the ground.

Procedure:
When you get out of the spawn room, place down Teleporter Entrance in front of it. I recommend to also upgrade it to spare some time later. After you do that, refill your metal and head to your favourite building spot.

You've finally reached to your spot, the first thing you need to do it to build your Exit, your Dispenser and Sentry gun. Boost them in order to speed up the construction. Then, with the help of nearby Metal Packs, upgrade your remaining buildings and prepare for enemies, who will throw themselves at your nest.

Summary:
It works well until your fellow Engineer (or other teammates) starts to steal your metal. But I recommend this rollout for those, who aren't ready for Jag Effect rollout. This is, however, the basic rollout which everyone should execute correctly.

You can see already from the name that the Engineer doing this rollout will haul already upgraded buildings to the front. This rollout isn't that effective as those I already mentioned. However it's mechanically similar to the Standart Rollout, but instead of picking metal from packs, the Hauler uses the Resupply Locker as it's source of metal.

Procedure:
The core of this rollout is to use Resupply Locker as a main source of metal. So you need to drop your Teleporter Entrance and your Dispenser (or Sentry gun) in front of your spawn doors. Then upgrade those buildings up to level three, replenish your metal from a nearby Resupply Locker.

After this step, pick up your Dispenser (or Sentry gun) and haul it to your desired spot. After you reach the area, where you want to have your nest, drop down your Dispenser, build Teleporter Exit and essentially, start building your remaining building - Sentry gun. Use the nearby Metal Packs and metal from your level 3 Dispenser to fully upgrade your Sentry.

Summary:
I'd say that the other two rollouts are more efficient, mainly because with this one, you'll find yourself upgrading your last building the second, when the gates open so there's no time to prepare for the incoming attack (assuming your nest is the first thing your enemies will focus on).

Comparison
All three rollouts are mostly meant for Defense in setup time. However, this is not the only time you should consider using a rollout, You can use it practically almost everywhere, where it's worth doing.
From my personal experience, I recommend the Jag Effect rollout because it's relatively simple and effective when done right. A few mistakes may occur while rolling yourself to the front. To improve this, I recommend nothing but practice. Create your own server and try some rollouts. Or join pubs and try it with actual teammates. Your fellow engies can assist you.
Recommended weapons

  • Fires a special bolt that can repair friendly buildings.
  • Alt-Fire: Use 100 metal to pick up buildings from long range.
  • -34% clip size and -50% max primary ammo on wearer.
  • Self mark for death when hauling a building, and a few seconds after redeployment.

The Rescue Ranger's ability to pick up buildings from a long range really comes to play on a certain open maps. For better results, haul one building to your spot, drop it and use the remaining 100 metal to teleport other building to you (if you find a good sight line).
The Rescue Ranger is recommended, but not needed. You can see that every rollout I've mentioned doesn't require the use of the Rescue Ranger's teleporting ability.

  • Press reload key to either teleport to your spawn area or teleporter.
  • Teleporters cost 50% less metal.
  • Construction hit speed boost decreased by 50%.
  • 20% less metal from Dispensers and Pickups.

The Eureka Effect offers the strong ability to teleport youself to either in spawn or to your Exit at will. This makes the Jag Effect rollout (and some unlisted ones) possible. You also have to count with slower constructing speed and, of course, less metal from Dispenser and Metal Packs.
These downsides luckily affects you only when you're in the middle of the attack since you can teleport to your spawn for free metal at almost any time.
This wrench also makes your Teleporters 50% cheaper which does help when you need to roll yourself to the front as quickest as possible.

  • Construction hit speed boost increased by 30%.
  • +15% faster firing speed.
  • -20% slower repair rate.
  • -25% damage penalty.
  • Takes three hit to take off the sapper.

Jag has the unique ability to swing faster which means faster upgrading and building. This upside makes the Jag the best wrench for upgrading not only in setup time, but in any situation.
The Jungle Inferno update changed how spending metal in setup time works, from 25 metal per swing to 50 metal per swing.
Payload rollouts
Defense

Payload maps has setup time and for RED defensive team it's always available. You should have enough time to setup with almost every rollout, the most efficient I found is again, the Jag Effect rollout. If your teammates constantly steals your metal packs, you should consider to head back to the base. When the enemy BLU team take your nest down, do not hesitate and setup back behind your team!

Offense

First thing you should do when the gates open is to check for the danger and spam the RED defending team is throwing at you. Short Circuit can help you handle it. After your team claims atleast a small chunk of area, place down a Mini-Sentry near the cart. Use it as your Dispenser because the cart really is the level 1 Dispenser which cannot be destroyed. Help your team clean the area and usually if your team can the first point, it's good to switch to normal sentry. But also playing Battle Engie with mini sentry is effective and it can help.

Reminder
In the typical Payload game, the front line is constantly moving depends on whether your team holds the ground or loses. The ability to adapt on this situation is a very powerful skill to have in mind and it's called Gamesense.
Attack / Defend rollouts
Defense

Most Attack / Defend maps have the lined points, meaning the enemy team has to capture one point to unlock the next. However maps such as Gravel Pit or Junction has 2 points active from the start of the round. The BLU team can capture both points at one but most of the time, if they want to capture, they need to focus their forces to one point at the time. In this case, you must react to such a situation and predict if it's an actual push or just a false unsuccessful effort to take over the point.

Offense

Some maps gives you the free space to build in front of the spawn, then there's no rollout needed for upgrading. But when the gates open, I recommend equipping the Eureka Effect and get the Exit up first. Then teleport back to spawn, to your buildings and teleport them trough to the spot.

Reminder
Many Attack / Defend maps has the problem with multi-engineering, if you happen to have more than 2 Engineers on your team, the best solution is to switch to another class. However if you desperately want to play as Engineer or you're doing the best work at defending, please don't take spots from your fellow workers.
Control Points rollouts
Control points are little bit more complicated. You see there are 5CPs and 3CPs. Both have similar rollouts but unlike Attack / Deffend or Payload, there exists multiple types of rollouts based on how forward from middle point do you want to setup.

Aggressive rollout

This one is tough one but extremly fun to play. Basically aggressive rollout is just how it sounds.
You want to get to the middle fastest as possible with your team. Build Dispenser and Sentry. After securing the area and capping the point. You basically need to move with your team.
But if you fail, your team wouldn't have support from you, no teleporters, no dispensers, nothing.
And worse, you won't get on the track again because your failure just slowed you.
I recommend this for advanced Engies.

Passive rollout
This is more common but it gets the job done.
Passive means that you want to setup your stuff behind your team. Somewhere around middle and your second. You're now tool for support but also defense and your sentry should punish cheeky scouts who's wants to get a little bit more behind. Also you should involve teleporters in your building blueprint.

Reminder
I know that teleporters can be pretty hard to setup on 5CP due to constantly moving spawns but placing one doesn't really hurt anybody (especially if the Teleporter costs 50 metal to build) so if you have time and your team is pushing like for an minute or two. Head back to base and setup an Entrance.

There are multiple Control Points versions and yes, the 3CP maps has it's own rollouts too, more specifically, only one that the Engineer players agreed on. This rollout I'm talking about is something between Standart Rollout and the Hauler. Your Teleporter is more important than ever and you should keep it at times, when your team is attacking the enemy.

Basically when the round starts, you want to head to the location near the main point or the mid fight and start to build your nest there, you have to be careful thought as the enemy can assault you when your team isn't nearby.
King of the Hill rollouts
King of the Hill generally prefers Mini-Sentries for sake of rollouts. However, there after the initial rollout, if your team has a solid grasp on mid, it is not unreasonable to switch to defense to try and further secure a hold. You can try to do the rollout similar to the one used on 3CP.
However, the Mini-Sentry can be a powerful area denial which is a very desired thing on KotH. A well placed level 3 on KotH can making capturing the point a very difficult task.

Reminder
King of the Hill doesn't have any strict rollout to be honest, most of the time I see that the Engineers are using Mini Sentries. However one thing I want to mention is that the presence of the Dispenser on KotH is much more important, so build it.
Useful binds
There are some usefull bind that I found or what I use:

Fast loadout switch

To use Jag Effect rollout effectivly, these binds can help you by switching your loadouts (A,B,C,D)

bind "KP_END" "load_itempreset 0" bind "KP_DOWNARROW" "load_itempreset 1" Bind "KP_PGDN" "load_itempreset 2" Bind "KP_LEFTARROW" "load_itempreset 3"

Quick building

Instantly puts chosen building in toolbox and gets ready to build. Also It can destroy buildings without destruction PDA. Usable when having Frontier Justice equipped.

bind "MOUSE3" "destroy 2 0; build 2 0 bind "4" "destroy 0 0; build 0 0" bind "5" "destroy 1 0; build 1 0" bind "6" "destroy 1 1; build 1 1"

in order:
  • Sentry
  • Dispenser
  • Tele Entrance
  • Tele Exit
End
