Overview
I personally think this game is going to be awesome in a year or 2 when it's finished. This guide is not to say KV sucks. It's simply to give you ideas to play around in KV until more content is added.
Describe that ship!
Obviously your ship is going to have a name. But what is that ship you made really?

Who made the ship? Was it government issued? Is it sold on the open market? Was it hand crafted?

When was it made? Where was it made?

What is it's purpose? Is it a planetary blockader? Deep space interceptor? Intergalactic freighter? Or is it just a adventuring ship with lots of living space?

Who used the ship? How effective was it?

Was the ship technologically advanced? Or was it as archaic as that old J98*?

This description of the ship you made fleshes out details on it, and the story around the galaxy.

*For you newbies reading this the J98 was a stock light fighter with weak engines and a single light gun, courtesy of Badland Studios. A few updates later they took out all the stock ships due to incompatibilities in the files.
More Story Background!
Federated Planets of Vantiak
FederatedPlanetsofVantiak
Banker
Diplomat

That is the entire official story about one faction. This is like just reading the first couple details about something in a library dedicated to that book you're reading. I have 5 words for that.

GIVE IT MORE STORY!

The thing I love about KV is that it allows you to create your own story, your own background, your own theories, your own beginnings, your own events, your own timeline. This gives you the freedom to set the stage at a galactic level.

Here's an example=

'The Vantiak Agression War changed the style of warfare for generations to come. Instead of the classic battleship to battleship with fighters combating bombers, the Vantiaks used their legions of J99 fighters to overrun the Federated Galactic Union fleets. The FGU was desperate, so they contracted a company called Campbell Industries to create a fighter to outmatch their opponents.'

I could go on and on with this. You use the story to also connect to the ship descriptions.

'The Raider fighter was commisioned by Campbell for the FGU during the Vantiak Aggression War...'

Again, make up your own story to tell.
Admire the Scenery!
Kinetic Void has great graphics. One way to appreciate this even more is to avoid combat, just look at the space beauty.

I reccommend making a cockpit with a powerful engine to launch.

MWD to fronts of planets. The textures on them are pretty awesome.

Fly through a ring of asteroids. For a challenge, fly in the ring and never come out.

Fly by your ships, the larger the better. Currently KV has it set up so you can't fly through the ship parts anymore (It's one spherical collision box) so it ain't as fun as it was.

Try landing on the moon.

Ect. ect. ect.
Bottomview
Who knows, the storytelling may be officially supported within KV itself!

Right now, the descriptions are only availible if you artwork the ship pic and upload it to steam (I think), but storytelling is great.

I hope this keeps you entertained enough.

EDIT: With the addition of Workshop, it you can also describe your ship if you upload it on Steam thet way, also.

I'd love to see someone with aquire the IP and just actually take the game through to fruition. I mean i could see it like a purely ship based No Man's Sky with all manner of crazy things to run into, jumping in mid Battle, imagine some fluid Faction interaction where factions may go to war find peace and then later become allies. It all still allows for that make your won story but things are actually happening around you. it ceases to be this drudge of constant mine this shoot that go back to the station rinse and repeat

agreed its a shame because this game had soo much potential, with its free range ship building was really and immersive, i just wished it had a multiplayer setting where people chan challenge others creations in a death match style game

@Sebastian Yarrik I am very sorry, but this game has been dead for over 6 years. Devs have disappeared, the game is still an alpha (even though they claimed a beta and finished game, which is a lie), and I'm even amazed to find a notification on content from this game of all places.

This was one of the first games I ever purchased. I only wished it gave me more content like was promised in 2014.

is there going to be any updates to the game? since i use to play this for hours on end and loved it however it does get a bit lonely and perhaps a tutorial would be useful then again i haven't played this game in ages, plus if there were an online version where, people can test their builds because the customisation whilst limited, was phi-nominal and was the key part of what i loved about the game and i wished many games did something similar, where its a massive open world and you have to earn money to upgrade or unlock certain parts and have premium pieces such as an angle figurehead ect, as i said the ship building mechanics were the best as for game play as i said it can get very lonely and simply killing AI whist fun, half the time they either run away or are just clones of the ships you have made.

@blaze_edwin The game has several things to iron out. Combat is awful with smaller-sized enemy ships. The interface isn't really explained. I'm an experienced player, but between stopping playing this game 4 month's earlier and picking it up again now, it's really confusing on what the the features are and how to work them.

KV is going to be a great game, and I've seen efforts by the developers to clear up information with new players, but it still has that sharp learning curve that unfortunately be only explained through experimentation.

(Micro-Warp is the wormhole device. The Kinetic shield is what you want for smaller distances; since T activates MWD for you, try Shift-T for Kinetic Shield toggle. If that doesn't work, ask in the forums.)

A message pops up "I'm going to kill you", the dismiss counter counts down and...?is someon going to attack me?
nothing happens, no one is nearby.
Someone else offers "suspicious activity near you, I'd check it out if you made it worth my while"
How? the message 'dismissed' is a few seconds, so I don't get a chance to respond.

OK, just got the game. Not having a good experience in the first hour. No clues as to what to do. I did find the guide to key use.
First off, starting a novice player in the ship builder is pointless-give me a ship, send me on a mission, so I know what a ship can do. I found the load button, launched a pre-built-now what? There's no map legend; What does one symbol mean vs the others? Align is useful, but is it "auto", in that if my target moves i stay aligned? Is there freight to be carried from system to system? Something 52 klicks away, I do the dropdown "warp 50Km", nothing happens, even tho' what seems to be the warp indicator is green. I hit "T" for a micro warp, and get the full-blown wormhole FX that sends me off godd know where, since I lose the lock I had.

Your guide gave me a direction for where I should be headed. I'm still trying to get into the basics of KV, so thanks! You've given me a few goals to mess around with. Hope you do a follow up as updates continue.

This is just great.

A Mass Effect or Halo mod would look great.
