Possible Fixes
I stole this from a website but this was hard to find, and thought others might enjoy it. Credits will be given.

After I bought Dead Island on Steam, I kept having a sound problem every time I played the game.

Turned out it was because the audio was turned on too high and it got clipped.

So here is the fix.
1. Go the audio setting C:\Users\{your username}\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings
2. Open Audio.scr with note pad
3. Update the following values

MaxVolume(1)
FXVolume(10)
WaveVolume(10)
SpeechVolume(10)
MovieVolume(1)
MovieVolumeSource(0)

4. Save the file
5. Set the file to read only.

There we go!

This also helps if you're still having problems:
Goto the directory: <Username>\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings

Open: "Audio.scr" with a text editor and Change:
API("XAudio2")
To:
API("aOpenAL")

Doesn't work for me. I really don't want to play the downgraded "Defunct Edition" of this game just to have working audio.

UPDATE: For me at least it will appear normal audio, or no audio at all. For now I just try either opening the game through steam library, dead island helper tool, razer cortex, or the .exe file in the directory and take turns seeing which one has audio or not. It's random no matter which one I chose but eventually there are times it'll work with no issues in one whole session until I close the game.

another thing that I had which im not sure if it plays a roll in the audio situation but download and install dead island helper tool and put it in your game directory. You can tweak with minor settings if you want but clicking on Play Dead island through the tool instead of steam helped a lot.

What worked for me is doing the above method, setting Audio.scr to read only in properties. THEN right clicking on audio settings in the bottom corner of your task bar, click sounds, go to playback, right click on your green checked mark speaker or sound device, click on properties, then advance, and uncheck "Enable audio enhancements." and make sure your sample rate is 96000 Hz

If you seem to can't edit the Audio.scr file, do:
-Press WinKey + R, type "shell:sendto" and press ENTER
-This opens the Send To folder of your user profile
-In this folder, create a shortcut to "Notepad.exe"
-To edit the Audio.scr file, right-click on the file, click Send To and choose Notepad.
