How to safely mine!
Tekijältä AntiAnecdote
I take it a lot of people are having trouble with zombies and skeletons spawning in their map so i decided to make this guide to help reduce that problem, the reason i found this out is by dieing from skeletons and zombies more than a few times.

Thanks for reading, Hoped it helped!

Torches

This is the space covered by torches this makes the most of torches and saves a lot of coal.

make sure to use this format when mining out big rooms!

You can see dark area's by pressing C this is the default key thx to Dennis for pointing this out.
Stairs ! IMPORTANT !
if you are making a staircase down to mine better ore etc

! PUT A TORCH NEXT TO THE STAIRCASE !

Zombies and skeletons can spawn on the dark staircase and will just walk straight up and kill whatever is upstairs they can also go down make sure these are lit at all times!
Type and level the ore's can be found
Copper Ore From mining, layers +25 to -49
Tin Ore From mining, layers -10 to -49
Malachite Ore From mining, layers -10 to -59
Iron Ore From mining, layer -50 and below
Lead Ore From mining, layers -50 to -84
Silver Ore From mining, layers -10 to -59
Gold Ore From mining, layers -65 to -84
Platinum Ore From mining, layer -60 and below

Update, nothing spawning on the dirt stairs, golems spawning anywhere stone is being stored.
All my dirt has been prospected away, but I'm sure it would behave the same (as below).

15 Gnomes in 3 squads of 'Citizens Defence' (+ 5 Crossbow men patrolling my rail fence once a day) and they will clear out 5 or 6 Marble Golems in a row without even needing a single bandage afterwards.

bit of late post, but anything can be turned into a golem, having had a few straw or cotton golems

I use a Spiral Stairwell design within a 3x3 space to get my miners to safety. On every floor I start by mining stairs down to the level I'm approaching, followed by clearing out the 3x3 dirt/stone walls that lines up with the previous level, leaving the floor. I put a torch in the center of the stairwell, and I've never had trouble with it.

It's more cumbersome, but it's very easygoing on gnome travel, especially if you have some basic resource caches placed at the lower levels that might cause gnomes to risk starvation during the trip back up (especially if you're going down into the -80's.)

I found it less time intensive to mine strips every 3rd block, looking almost inverse to yours. Where you have blocks I would have walkways, and keep a torch there. Where you have all mined out, I would have every third row mined, that way you can see every available mineral and only mine those when its something you want. To avoid any spawns, I would wall in the ends when finished.

simple, just turn them off on the advanced setup screen when starting a new game. you can stop any mob from spawning through the startup screen

lol new to this game... all of my gnomes are currently being murdered by skeletons at the bottom of my mine since they refuse to block it up like i told them to...

Just read this guide... turns out the way i was mining was effectively begging to be slaughtered by skeletons...

thank you...
