"I once worked on an unpublished article about the legality and availability of RO2's weapons in the USA (you can find pretty much everything btw, even the tanks, but there are restrictions in place for the fully auto firearms... and I'm sure there is some super special permit for the tanks). You can find a Kar 98 (even with a Swastika on it) for around $200 to $400 and pick up a Mosin Nagant for around $100. I'm not suggesting that you and your friends play Red Orchestra 2 for real. However, firing these old guns show what a great job Tripwire did in terms of shooting stuff.

Edit: There were only 3 firearms from RO2 that the licensed firearms dealer helping me wasn't able to find for sale in the US.

MKb 42, the prototype of the Sturmgewehr 44 (you could get a STG 44 )
PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle
Soviet Degtyaryov DP-28 light machine gun

Apparently, byf is a factory code. Byfs were built at a Mauser plant located in Oberndorf am Neckar, a town in Germany's Baden-Württemberg state. I couldn't tell you if the one in my photo is a byf. The picture was taken at a gun show.

I have a friend who owns a K98 built during the war in Brno, a Czech city occupied by the Germans.

He also has a Tsarist era Mosin Nagant. That model is really long and has a huge bayonet. Apparently, soldiers were supposed to use it as a pike in the event of a cavalry charge. That model was built before the Soviets took power and adopted the Metric system, so it is pretty much impossible to dial-in the sights (unless you are familiar with antiquated units of measurement used exclusively by Imperial Russia).

I don't personally own a K98. I do have a Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine that was built in Izhevsk in 1944. I bought it for $75.

I don't know. Does byf just designate which factory built it?
