Playing Rise of the Triad: The Hunt Begins
By c5
The demo version of Rise of the Triad was called "The Hunt Begins", and unlike most demos, it consisted of brand new content not found in the final game. Here's how to play it, no download required!

Finding SETUP.exe and DOSBOX
The first step of playing "The Hunt Begins" is to find the Rise of the Triad folder and the Dosbox folder.

SETUP.exe is located in: Steam/steamapps/common/The Apogee Throwback Pack/Rise of the Triad.

Also in this folder is a folder called "DOSBOX". Right click this and hit "Open in new window".

Opening Setup.exe in Dosbox
You should now have both the Rise of the Triad and DOSBOX folders open, all you have to do is drag SETUP.exe onto dosbox.exe, like this:
Using SETUP to open "The Hunt Begins"
At this point, you will be in the setup program, which looks like this:

Go to "Use modified stuff" and hit enter, bringing you to this screen:

Select "Choose Alternate Game Levels" and you will reach this screen:

Select HUNTBGIN.RTL, then back up to the main menu with the Escape key, and select "Save and Run ROTT".

Rise of the Triad will now be running. Start a new game, choose your character, and enjoy this bit of ROTT history!

what i love about this demo, is that the idea is that the leader of H.U.N.T. goes on a mini recon quest, blows up stuff that leads to the beginning of the vanilla game.

Figured I'd add this for those interested in more levels. There are two versions of The HUNT Begins: Regular Shareware and Deluxe Shareware.

Regular Shareware:
E1A1: The HUNT Begins
E1A2: Foggy Mountain
E1A3: The Fourth Door
E1A4: Dark Tunnels
E1A5: Metal Threat
E1A6: Ride 'Em Cowboy!
E1A7: Boom Boom Boom
E1A8: Wall To Wall
E2A1: Too Tall
E2A2: Play Room

Deluxe Shareware:
Same as above, plus 3 additional levels
E2A3: Prelude To A Kill
E2A4: Jumpin' Jehoshaphat
E2A5: GADZOOKS!

Regular Shareware appears as HUNTBGIN.RTL under GAME LEVEL WAD FILES.

Deluxe Shareware appears as HUNTBGN2.RTL under GAME LEVEL WAD FILES.

How to obtain Deluxe Shareware:
Can be downloaded from the old 3D Realms master download page. Once there you want to click on "Lasersoft ROTT Deluxe Levels":
http://legacy.3drealms.com/downloads.html

If you can't obtain them from 3D Realms you can download them from my google drive page. These also include other rtl (levels) and rtc (combat levels) that are freeware from 3D Realms:

Nice. Haven't looked at any of the levels in that zip folder yet, so I'll have to check it out.

I noticed you posted a guide and wanted to mention the additional .zip file included with the game called MORELVLS.zip. It contains additional game content people can enjoy. In particular, there is a modified shareware version that includes several additional levels to "The Hunt Begins" (the file is called huntbgn2.rtl).
