Super Blood Hockey: A Beginner's Guide to Scoring Quick Wins
Készítő: Eifersucht18
This Guide will lay out basic Strategy and Tactics that will get you on the road to winning games quickly.

Keep in mind that there is intentionally no 'finesse' to this approach - but instead, simply a brute force emphasis on exploiting AI weaknesses to get you those first wins - Once you get a handle on the basics, you should absolutely experiment to find a play-style that suits you individually.

The Boys of Winter

'Super Blood Hockey' is a gloriously fun throwback ice hockey arcade game created by Loren Lemcke and released independently in August 2017. Distinguished by simple and intuitive gameplay, retro pixelated graphics, a fantastic soundtrack and a great variety of game-modes to include Exhibition, Tournament, Challenges and a deceptively deep Franchise mode (currently in Beta / but fully playable as of Dec 2018), there is much to celebrate in this little title.

The most common gripe however (as was also my experience) is the difficulty in scoring goals - and by association, therefore - the ability to win games as a beginner.

The following '3 Steps' worked well to push me up the learning curve quickly:

Controls

Familiarity Breeds Success:

Let's face it - much of what we do as humans is a function of muscle memory - and picking a 'Control Scheme | Layout' that you are familiar with will do wonders for your ability to win games quickly.

After struggling to score (and losing comprehensively) in my first few games with the default layout - I found that re-mapping the keyboard controls to match your favorite controller layout (PlayStation / XBox / Steam Controller etc) helps to move you up the learning curve quickly.

Personally, I found that mirroring the PlayStation Controller layout I have used with sports games like FIFA for ages works wonders. Note the similarity in the positioning of the 'Switch Player' button (Upper Left Bumper on Playstation), 'Pass' button (X Button on Playstation) and 'Shoot' button (O Button on Playstation):

Key

S

A

Q

Team Selection

Overpowering the Opposition:
Or also known as - 'Bringing Men to a Schoolyard Fight'.

While all the selectable teams (United States, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and North Korea) in the game play the same with (intentionally) identical stats, it is still possible to gain a discerable advantage by varying the composition of individual players on your team. Prior to the start of each match, you will need to select four outfield players for your team - These four players can be any combination of the three preset Body/Player Types (See table below).

Player Type
Description | Skill
Sniper
Lightweight Sharpshooter at 80 kgs with low strength but high speed and shooting accuracy
PlayMaker
Midweight All-Rounder at 100 kgs with medium strength, speed and shooting accuracy
Enforcer
Muscular Bruisers at 120 kgs with high strength but poor speed and shooting accuracy

Situation:
The AI will randomly select a combination of Snipers, PlayMakers and Enforcers for their team

Strategy:
Following the basic premise that the opposition cannot score if they do not have the puck, pick your team to be generally stronger (Enforcers) in each position. This will ensure that you will not be knocked off the puck easily, will maintain possession for longer periods of time and win most fights that break out. For example:

AI Team
Your Team
Enforcer - Enforcer - Sniper - Sniper
Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer or Playmaker - Enforcer or Playmaker
Enforcer - Playmaker - Playmaker - Sniper
Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer or Playmaker
Enforcer - Playmaker - Sniper - Sniper
Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer or Playmaker - Enforcer or Playmaker
Enforcer - Enforcer - Playmaker - Sniper
Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer or Playmaker

Note: The last example in the table above is depicted in this screenshot, where the AI Team as North Korea, selected an (Enforcer - Enforcer - Playmaker - Sniper) combination, which we as the United States would counter with an (Enforcer - Enforcer - Enforcer - Playmaker) combination.

Scoring Goals

One Shot At Glory:
Now that you have set the stage for success by re-binding your controls for maximum impact and picking a team to out-muscle the oppostion, the only thing left to be done is to put the puck in the back of the net.

Getting Possession Of The Puck:

Getting the Puck
Tactics
From Center-Ice
When the referee drops the puck onto the ice, press the 'Back' direction button toward your teammates, and repeatedly smash the 'Pass' button - This is a function of good timing but you should more often than not get possession.
From Center-Ice (Illustration)
Free Pucks
If the puck is free on the ice, switch to your closest player and quickly move toward it to gain possession - Note that you can also press the 'Fight' button to punch any opposing players near you that are also moving toward the free puck.
Free Pucks (Illustration)
From the Opposing Team
Press the 'Switch Player' button to select your closest player to the puck, and move toward the opposing team-member and press the 'Fight' button to punch them. This is largely a function of strength and power, but since you have already selected a team that is bigger and stronger in every position, you should knock the puck free more often than not. On the flip side, while in possession of the puck, you will find that with those bigger and stronger players you will maintain possession despite repeated punches from the much smaller opposition.

Power Plays - Setting Up The Opportunity:

Creating Power-Play Situations
Tactics
The Bait and Switch
Once you have the puck, focus on keeping possession while looking for an opening. One way to do this is to skate back toward and behind your own goal - Typically this will draw one or two opposing players toward you. When they get close, quickly change direction and skate toward the opponents goal (leaving them behind), where you will now have a numerical advantage of 4 to 2 against their goalie.
The Bait and Switch (Illustration)
The Loop-de-Loop
If you are having trouble finding a free teammate or shot, continue to focus on maintaining possession and skate up and behind the opponents goal - Typically at least two, sometimes all four, opponents will follow you leaving two or three of your team-mates wide open and alone in front of their goalie.
The Loop-de-Loop (Illustration)
The Jail Break
The AI (all 4 opposition outfield players) will typically make a beeline for your goal as soon asgets possession of the puck. This creates an opportunity wherein all opposing outfield players are in your half of the ice, and the opposing goalie is left all alone. While on defense, select the closest player to the puck and smash the 'Fight' button repeatedly (Press 'Switch Player' + 'Fight' button) - And since your team has been purposefully selected to be bigger and stronger, you will often knock the puck loose, and a quick pass (Press 'Direction' + 'Pass') to an open teammate further up the ice will release them for a Breakaway.

On a Breakaway, you can choose to (Option 1) - Skate directly at the opposing goalie for a 'Placement / Sniper Shot' into one of the corners of the goal, or (Option 2) - Take a slightly longer (diagonal) route across the ice, allowing one of your teammates to catch up for a pass and 'First Time Shot' at goal.
The Jail Break (Illustration)
Who Blinks First?
Finally, you can also attempt to bait the opposing goalie out of position by skating directly toward him and waiting for him to make a move to block/check you. At the absolute last second, and only after the goalie has made his move (i.e he blinks first), quickly change direction and shoot into one of the corners of the goal. While much harder to pull off than the other aforementioned methods, and typically also necessitating a 'Playmaker' or 'Sniper' Player Type due to the increased accuracy required, this type of goal is particularly useful on Breakaways or when you are otherwise struggling to score.

Taking The Shot:

Shot Type
Tactics
The First-Time Shot
The 'First-Time' Shot is simply the easiest way to score - To do this, skate around with the puck until you find an open team-mate in front of goal. Quickly press the appropriate direction key and 'Pass' the puck to him (Press 'Direction' + 'Pass'), while near simultaneously, then pressing the 'Shoot' button (Press 'Shoot') which will make the receiving player take a First-Time Shot at goal. This method almost always scores because it effectively changes the direction of the attack before the goalie has time to reposition himself. It should be noted here that goalie's in the game do not make saves based on 'Random Number Generation (RNGs)', but on positioning, and as in the real sport, are extremely hard to beat when positioned properly.

If you do not feel your team-mates are open enough, simply take 'Option 2' - maintain possession, do the 'Loop-de-Loop' behind the opponent's goal, and look for another opening.
The First-Time Shot (Illustration)
Rebound Shots
Goalie's only block shots (and importantly - do not capture/cover the pucks) and so the puck will simply bounce off them providing the opportunity for a quick 'Rebound Shot' from another angle. While the positioning of your other teammates to grab the rebound is dependent on the AI, quickly switching to another player after the initial shot is blocked and pressing 'Shoot' immediately will sometimes net you an easy goal.
Placement - Sniper Shots
The 'Placement Shot' is much harder to achieve for beginners and will additionally require having 'Snipers' and 'PlayMaker' player types on your team. Given that our beginners strategy is to out-muscle the other team and maintain posession, which means you will have a larger number of the less accurate 'Enforcers' on your team, I would not place too much emphasis on this approach. If inclined to however, it entails pressing and holding the 'Shoot' button until the 'Shot Power' bar fills up, and then 'placing' the shot with the 'Direction' buttons to the near or far sides of where the goalie is positioned (Press 'Direction' + Hold 'Shoot' button (Then Release 'Shoot')) . Overall much harder to pull off, and I would generally recommed sticking with either of the first two approaches when starting out.

Uncork The Champagne

In Conclusion:
A quick look through the Gobal 'Steam Achievement' Stats for 'Super Blood Hockey' reveals some pretty startling facts:

Achievement
Description
Score Your First Goal
Achieved by 67% of players - This indicates that almost a third of players or 33% were unable to even score a single goal
Score 10 Goals
Achieved by 33% of players - This indicates that a full two-thirds of players were unable to, or perhaps gave up in frustration prior to scoring 10 goals
Win 10 Games
Achieved by 9% of players - This indicates that over 90% of players are unable to or gave up in frustration prior to winning 10 games

I personally found the statistics above to mirror my personal experience of getting absolutely clobbered in matches initially (in spite of starting out on 'Easy' difficulty), simply unable to score a goal. Making the strategic and tactical adjustments detailed in this guide however, took me from regular 5-0 defeats to 10-2 victories within a few games.

'Super Blood Hockey' is a wonderful throwback to the games of our youth, with addictive gameplay, a boppin' soundtrack, responsive devs and great new content (including a 'Franchise' mode) still being added. I am having a lot of fun with it - and hopefully this guide will help other Beginners get back amongst the goals and winning ways..
