Spill the beans already...
All ya have to do is find the Dark Palace, click on it, click on the description, then click the tiny back arrow. You'll be able to view it as one of your own buildings. You can view the enemy roster, and of course - TAKE THE BUILDING OFF THE REPAIR ROUTE!
My sister and I always struggled with this mission as kids, and I found this solution way back in 2004. Nice to see that the glitch still works.

My original method when I discovered this glitch:
Have 2 market places
Get rich
Build a Sorcerer's Abode
Perform glitch
Spam Earthquakes.
GG, EZ

It also works on the other Palace in "Quest for the Magic Ring."
It only works on palace units.

Does it work in multiplayer?
That I do not know...

Just minimize amount of heroes at first, build 2-3 guard towers in the middle of map, gnome housing near them, ai will be broken, he will be sending low level characters to towers, they will be running away in fear, sometimes they will die. You even don't need to care about caravans. While enemy heroes doing nothing - upgrade your economy, level up your heroes on lairs, battleground(or how it's called), and then easy win against weak enemy heroes.

@Pax Yes I almost did that, I was doing both, basically using my now bottomless pit of money to support my paladins in razing the enemy fortifications but my units were also attacking the caravans that came into range and I indirectly won from that instead of beating down the palace itself.

That's interesting. My way of doing it was building a dwarven settlement in the middle, diagonal lines of ballista towers from the flanking guard towers to the edge of the map to block the caravans (spacing them so close as to allow two to fire) and then a push in the middle with paladins, advancing ballista towers with an outpost or two and wizards. Some time after losing their forward base, they run out of money and lose. I never once destroyed the enemy castle.

I wonder if anyone ever beat this mission without cheesing and focusing down the caravans? Like a full-on frontal attack until they fold?

I have never heard or tried this. I will give it a shot tonight, sounds like fun. I usually place a Dwarven settlement in the middle at the guardhouse (with trading posts at the three guardhouses) and build out towards the enemy with ballistas.

Thank you for this! I've played this game since I was a small child, and I never knew. I'm looking at putting together a speedrun for this, and this is invaluable information.

Placing a line of guardhouses and getting them to lvl 2 worked for me. The enemy caravans get wrecked by guardhouse arrows and key the enemy heroes at bay if you get the guardhouses going at the beginning to kill off the low lvl heroes. That's why it's called The Siege. Attrition wins.

After some testing the money needed to do that is around 15k actually, considering the fact you don't need to do anything outside of this. And it's glitchless also.

Earthquakes cost less collectively ;)

You can also just flag the palace and enemy elves will destroy it themselves after 25-30k gold on reward. It will take some time but they'll do it. You don't even need heroes or anything.
