In-Depth Guide To Sniping
By Maika
Snipings a good Job mate
Before you read this guide please do keep in mind this is my first one and I am not really a good speaker and even in school I didn't really write very good essays so I might not have done a good job Explaining my self. I do not play for any sort of competitive team (well I do but I suck and play backup and its not for sniper) I am just a little kid who likes to play tf2. If you do have any trouble trying to figure out what I'm trying to say please comments at the bottom to notify me that I suck at English Thank you :)

If you found this Helpful please click on the like button to show your appreciation thanks!

ADD TO THIS GUIDE!!!!
I don't know everything about sniping so if you could comment or add me to tell me what I should add I would gladly make you a contributer and it into this guide. Again I am just a regular tf2 player trying to help out some new people who want to get better at sniping. I am always trying to make this guide better and better so hopefully it will make you better and better!
OMG THIS GUUIIZ HACKING HOW DO YOU SCOPE AND KILL SOMEONE THAT FAST?!!?!?!
First of all hes probably not hacking he is just an experienced sniper who knows this class well and plays this game way to much(aka me minus the experienced part).

Most of the "hackers" Strafe back and forth and has his crosshair level to his enemies head and when he sees a target he tries to make his crosshair as close to his targets head as possible and scopes and kills you. Might sound like a lot but its pretty easy.

If your new and you are just standing in the corner scoped trying to bodyshot the guy its making his job even easier because you are standing still. To me when people do that its like they're screaming "SHOOT ME! SHOOT ME!".

Thanks for Standing Still

Mouse Settings
Many people ask me "What is your sensitivity on?" or "Do you play on a High Sensitivity?". Well if you really want to know I play on a medium sensitivity with raw input on. I highly reccomend you turn raw input on and turn mouse acceleration off. You can find these setting in "options" under "mouse".
Here is my settings
Weapons
Lets First Take a lot at the Sniper's arsenal of weapons his Stock Weapons are

The Sniper Rifle,

The Smg

and the Kukri.

The Default Set is actually pretty good in my opinion the only Downside that I feel is that I don't need the Smg. The only reason to really use it is when your caught out of postion and need to fall back to a safer location and use the smg to cover you. But to me it leaves me vunerable to spies and I'd rather "No-Scope" them which deals around 50 damage each time you hit them.(Plus it makes pyro's chasing you look like complete idiots :P)

Check out my Weapons guide which covers ALL of the weapons here

Strafing vs. Standing Still
Strafing is Simple technique in which you hit A and D moving back and forth which makes it harder for the opposing sniper to hit you with a headshot or even a bodyshot. The biggest mistake I see with newer snipers is that they stay in a corner and try to headshot or bodyshot the other sniper. Which to me seems a lot harder to do and makes your completely vunerable to the other sniper trying to hit you

Not only it makes you vunerable to snipers it makes you vunerable to spies even if you have the razorback(which is a Shield that blocks 1 backstab) which can just bust out their revolver and just shoot you until you drop.

I am not saying that you should never charge up your shot to kill someone. I am saying that you should just think about when you should charge up your shot and when you should just quickscope. If your not paying attention you will get sniped or a scout or spy could sneak up on you.

If you haven't noticed scoping while sniping gives you less vison of the area around you which is really bad. Countless times I have been zoomed in trying to take someone out then I get spamed by a demo, soldier or even a bloody scout just standing next to me.

Unscoped

Scoped
No-Scoping
I'm pretty sure almost all of you know what "No-Scoping" is but just for the small people that don't No-Scoping is when you just shoot your Sniper rifle without scoping. You usually want to no-scope when theres a pyro or any other assault class is chasing you. I notice a lot of snipers underestimate no-scoping and don't really use it and instead use their smg or try and Jarate then knife them. But no-scoping is fairly easy safer than Jarate and I prefer it over the Smg. It does around 50 damage wherever you hit them. So it doesn't matter if you no-scope someone in the head you will still deal just around the same damage.

If your curious to know what sniper set you should use I am currently working on a weapons guide which will cover hopefully all the weapons in tf2. Again when I am finished i will put the link here
"Quickscoping"
Now please don't be like "OMG THIS IS TF2 NOT CALL OF DUTY YOU NOOOOOOOB" because people say that to me and it really annoys me. Yes this is tf2 but "Quickscoping" is really useful for hit and runs and killing the oposing sniper. Quickscoping is what I do most of the time when I am sniping its a Combonation of Strafing and just scoping on your target. Like I said earlier this is how I see most of the better snipers counter-snipe and such.
To "Quick-Scope" you strafe Normally and look head level. If you haven't noticed wherever your crosshair is, is where you will zoom. This makes it extremly easy to snipe. So if you have your crosshair already Headlevel then it makes the job so much easier. When you see your target get your crosshair as close as you can to your target's head. Then zoom find his head and kill him. It might seem complicated but its pretty simple.
Leading
Leading is a technique in which you lead your crosshair into your opponents. For example on 2fort, Imagine your a sniper on catwalk and you see a pyro walking straight across the other catwalk. You would position your crosshair in front of him and when he walks into your crosshair you shoot. This is a simple technique which is useful for taking out the bigger classes like heavies and soldiers because you should be scoped while your leading which it charges up your shot making a headshot pretty easy. I do not reccomend doing this for countersniping unless the oposing sniper is unaware that you are looking at him and he is walking in a straight line.
Classes
This Section will focus on what you should do if you see one of the other classes and how you would snipe them. Remember Headshots do 150 damage when you quickscope and does 450 when fullycharged.No-scopes or bodyshots that are not charged do around 50 damage

Scout

Advantages
  • Low Health 125 (185)
  • 1 Fully Charged Bodyshot or any headshot kills
Disadvantages
  • Fast and Hard to shoot
  • Can Easily Kill you up close
  • Small Target

Not really much you can do against this class up close. You best try and keep your distance because their scattergun does a ton of damage to you up close. If you can't headshot the Scout don't be afraid to go in for a bodyshot. The other team may get really mad but who cares a kill is a kill.

Soldier

Advantages
  • Slow Class easy to heashot
  • Can Kill with a Headshot and Bodyshot
Disadvantages
  • Rockets can easily be spammed at you and can be very annoying
  • High Health 200 (300)
  • Good Soldiers will Rocket Jump from the other side of the map to kill you.

Fairly easy class to Kill I usually Just headshot the soldier then just shoot them in the body. No sense try and go for another headshot and miss.Be careful though they can rocket Jump and catch you off guard and leave you helpless.

Pyro

Advantages
  • Medium Health 175 (260)
  • Headshot and a Bodyshot Kills
  • Normal Speed
  • Not much range capability(besides flare gun)
Disadvantages
  • If hit with the Flare gun fire makes you flinch which makes it hard for you to hit headshots
  • If pyro manages to sneak around to get close to you, you will die.

Despite the fire being a pain in the butt the pyro is an easy class to snipe out in the open like I said he can't really do much at a distance but if a pyro does manage to get close to you I suggest either use your smg or no-scope whichever way you prefer. Try and Dodge their Flare gun flares because the damage can really make it hard for you to snipe.

Demoman

Advantages
  • Slower Speed
  • Medium Hp 175 (260)
  • Headshot and a bodyshot kills
  • Lacks Close Combat
Disadvantages
  • Pipes and Stickies can easily go unoticed until you take the damage
  • Can also be annoying because of spam

Demomen to me is one of the most annoying classes in the game as a sniper Pipes and Stickies can really embarrass you if your not carful and watch where you strafe. On the bright side he is an easy class to snipe if he isn't spamming you. If you see a demo just trying to kill you with stickies don't run away. Thats what he wants you to do. You have a better chance of surviving if you just get close to them and hit them with your knife, smg or even just no-scoping them

Heavy

Advantages
  • Very Slow Class
  • Big Target
  • Very Easy to hit
Disadvantages
  • Very High Hp 300(450)
  • Fully Charge Headshot can only 1 hit a buffed heavy

Heavies will be one of you main targets as a sniper along with medics and other snipers. Depending on your Situation I would reccomend either quick scoping the heavy 3 times if your good enough or just charge your shot then shoot them in the head. If your going to charge up your shot make sure that there are no snipers in the area so they won't shoot you while your targeting the heavy.

Engineer

Advantages
  • Low Hp 125 (185)
  • A Single Bodyshot or headshot kills
  • Not much of a Threat to you
  • Can easily Snipe their Buildings from long range
Disadvantages
  • Mini-Sentries can be annoying
  • If your not paying attention a lvl 3 can take you on by suprise
  • The Wrangler which lets engis take control of their sentry

Engineers are very easy to snipe and shouldn't cause you much trouble. But do not underestimate their shotgun or pistol. It still can do a lot of damage to you up close. Keep in mind that the wrangler can be a nuisance because remember whenever you take damage you will flinch. That might throw off your headshot or even miss the Sentry if your not carefull

Medics

Advantages
  • Low Hp 150 (225)
  • 1 headshot kills
Disadvantages
  • Second Fastest Class in the game
  • Usually in corners and moves around a lot to avoid damage

Medics are one of your Main targers as sniper to shut down them from pushing with out a crit or uber. I would target him as #1 Priority. Good medics try to Cower behind their pocket or just move around jumping a lot to avoid damage if you can't headshot them try and charge a bodyshot. It may not kill them but you can always try again.

Spy

Advantages
  • Low Hp 125 (185)
  • 1 Headshot kills
Disadvantages
  • Small Target
  • Spies Generally Target you if your not using a Razorback

Spies can make a bad sniper rage backstabs can completly shut you down I reccomend the razorback which blocks 1 backstab from happening. Be careful though smart spies usually use their revolver to kill you instead. Some spies use the Ambassader which is like a sniper revolver when ever he shoots you in the head it does 102 damage. The Ambassader has a slower fire speed than the default revolver so if your quick when the spy shoots you in the head you can turn around and shoot them in the head killing them.
Airshoting
Airshoting is a fun and hard thing to do as a sniper. Basically its when you see a Sticky Jumping Demo or a Rocket Jumping Soldier fly up in the air and kill them in air with a headshot . Its not only going to be Demo's and Soldiers some other classes may get airborne but its usually those two classes that your going to airshot.

The hit boxes may make it hard for some players to get an airshot off of someone but with practice it can be mastered. I usually try to wait for the player to come down then I go for the headshot. When you wait for them to come down you have to aim around their feet depending on how fast they're falling.

But some players like to shoot them when they go up. When doing this you must aim above the head in order to get the kill (I find it hard to do this which is why I don't do it. But this may be different for you). Depending on how fast they're flying you can go in for another headshot if you miss. Thats a bonus when you shoot them going up.

If your trying to airshot a demo try and headshot them before they sticky jump its a lot easier than shoting them in the air. They should be quicker in the air than soldiers (unless the soldier walljumps or skipjumps) which makes it even harder to kill than soldiers when they're in the air. If you do manage to miss don't panic. Try and get up close to the demo and try wack him with your melee weapon . The demoman has a hard time dealing with foes up close, use that to your advantage.

When your up against a soldier they can be more threatening to you than a demo because they
have more can kill you up close with their rocket launcher. It does over 100 damage up close and the soldier could easily kill you. When they rocket jump, try to pull off the headshot at the peak of their jump. You have to aim a bit above the tip of their helmet and if you hit them, they will die. The rocket jump takes some health and so will the fall damage, so it's essentially a guarnteed kill.

Airshoting is one of the harder things to do as a sniper. Not only is it hard to shoot the oposing player in the air the other player will be shooting at you and most of the time will throw off your aim and can kill you if your not careful. Also take note of their hp. If you see that a demo or soldier is lit up or damaged bad don't be afraid to go for the bodyshot. Like I said a kill is a kill.

Big Thanks to =[pG]=™ Golden for reminding me about an Airshot section and telling me a bit about how to airshot a soldier your learn new stuff everyday :)
Sniper vs. Sniper Tactics Pt.1
Snper vs. Sniper will all come down to Postioning, Aim and Strafing which I will call PAS. Without these three components you will make yourself look like an idiot and just get dominated by the oposing sniper.

Lets start with Positioning. Positioning is almost more important than aiming. If you can position your self where the other sniper can't really see you then its an easy headshot. Try to position your self where you feel comfortable position where you can see most of your surroundings while also having a lot of space to move around. If you don't feel comfortable find another spot but try not to stay in the same spot all the time the other sniper will just be looking at that one spot and it will make your job harder.

Alright lets Talk about Aiming. Aiming will take almost all skill. If you noticed most good snipers Strafe back in forth in order to make it harder for the opposing sniper to land a headshot on you. Like I said in my Strafing Section you have to keep your crosshair Head level it will make the job so much easier. It's best to aim when the enemy sniper tries to go for the kill when he stops and zooms in. For a Split second he will stop and thats the easiest time to go for the kill. Often times snipers will jump right after they shoot so you have to be quick.

Lastly Strafing, Strafing is one key component in Sniper vs. Sniper Combat if your standing still then its pretty easy for the enemy sniper to go and kill you. Also try not to make your Strafe to long. Good snipers will time your Strafe resulting in a kill. If you notice that your opponent is strafing to long then try and wait for him to go the other direction and his head should walk into your crosshair.

Sniper vs. Sniper Tactics Pt.2
Like I said in the Aiming section may see good snipers jump after they shoot. This way they can dodge your shot. However if you just "Jump" that may not save you. Many snipers like myself find it easy when other snipers just jump you need to crouch jump. If you don't know what that is then you just jump and spam crouch like you're gonna die, thats basically what you do. This does not guarentee that you'll be safe but it increases your chances of living.

Another thing that may help is what I call "Corner abusing". It is when you basically stay behind like a wall and move back and forth to fake out your oppenent. What your oppenent will try to do is zoom in and try and shoot you while your moving back and forth. MOST of the time he should miss and when he does you can go in for the kill. It's like another version of a second scope.

You MUST make every shot count. Use everything in your power to get that kill. Remember if you're in a spot that you're not confortable with or that you just feel you won't get the kill back off, heal up and look for another opening
Second Scoping
Second Scoping is a technique that I just learned a few weeks ago and I forgot to put this during the start of this guide. I don't know much about it but its related to sniper vs. sniper. Remember what I said in the Sniper vs. Sniper Section where you wait for the other sniper to scope first? Second scoping is when the other sniper fakes that hes trying to snipe and waits for you to try and snipe him. You should miss and thats when he goes for the kill. If you play basketball its like the pump fake of sniping. This Tactic is devastating on snipers like me who will usually wait for the other sniper to scope first. This tactic is sort of risky because there is a chance that he can snipe you so I don't reccomend doing this all the time.

Note:
A lot of people on sniper servers who know what this is may HATE ME for telling new snipers this but I am here to get you better so F***k you haters

Fun Fact: I learned this the hard way.
How to get better
Another great map to play on if you want to play alone is Tr_walkway. Its a map for target practice for not only sniper but for any class. Bascially its just bots running together letting them shoot you.I still use tr_walkway when I feel like I can't hit a damn brass beast heavy or If just for warming up my shot

If you're really really serious about getting better at snipe go mge servers or even sniper servers svs santuary is a great place to get destroyed by great snipers if you really want to get better go there. Many people ask me how to get better for me I guess I just developed a hatred to getting sniped.

Last Tips
Again Sniping is all about positioning,Aiming and the right descion making but above all
be confident having confidence in your shot will effect how well you shoot. Simply put if your not cofident your probably going to end up missing or bodyshoting the wrong person and even end up in the wrong position. If your feelling confident about your shots you will notice that your kills will skyrocket and it will seem that you can't be killed.

On the other hand don't be overconfident you only have 125 health there are many things in tf2 that could easily kill you. You don't want to be around corners where a Pyro, Soldier, Scout or even a heavy could be around.

But above all TRUST YOU INSTINCTS. Your probably think "Yeah,Yeah whatever trust my instincts" but I am being really serious, If you feel like your in a position that doesn't seem right just get away from there. If you see a sniper and you just don't feel like you can kill him in the position your in just go back and try to kill him elsewhere like a position he isn't looking. Remember there will always be a better sniper than you... unless your the best which you shouldn't be looking at this guide :3
Author's notes
Thanks for reading guys. This is my First Guide and there may be some spelling errors in it. Please rate and comment about what you think I'd really appreciate it.

Again I don't know everything about sniping if you could comment or add me to tell me what I should add I would gladly make you a contributer and it into this guide.

Also come back to this guide if you ask a question in the comments I probably will answer it.

I am usually on top notch's foundry server. The Top Notch community its a really great friendly place to be. Keep in mind it is a west coast server so I'm sorry for those that live in Eu and East Coast Merica. My ISP isn't very good and if go anywhere past East Coast I will be over 200 ping(hence my group name High Ping Snipers)

Who cares if its really gay? If it works it works, of course it won't work all the time and you can and will get punished for it but it's a tactic that many snipers use and can be useful tool when counter-sniping.

Second scoping is really really gay... for my opinion the basic principle of sniping is shoot first and dont miss ez..

Second Scoping is actually a good pro technique :P Don't know why most snipers don't use it and/or hate it.
