Introduction
This guide will give you instructions on how to add an application or game to your Steam library that was not purchased or activated through Steam.

This feature will allow you to use the Steam overlay in any application or game.

Adding an Application or Game
To add an application or game that was not purchased or activated through Steam to your library, click on the "Add a Game" button located at the bottom left of the Steam client and then choose "Add a Non-Steam game" from the menu.

The "Add a Game" window will appear asking you to select the application or game to add to your library. Steam will automatically detect executable's on your computer to populate the list.

If you don't see the application or game you want to add select the "Browse" button. This will bring up an explorer window where you can navigate to the executable within your computer's folders.

Once you've clicked "Open" or double clicked on the executable you want to add, it will appear in the list. Make sure the check box to the left of the application or game is checked and then click on the "Add Selected Programs" button.

The application or game you added will now appear in your Steam library. This will only add a shortcut in the Steam client. This will not allow you to download updates for your application or game through Steam

Launching Through Steam
Applications and games launched through Steam are able to take advantage of the Steam overlay and its features such as Steam friends and the Steam screenshot tool.

Whenever you're playing an application or game launched through Steam it will be displayed to your Steam friends list. It will let people know what you're playing and that you're in a non-Steam game.

It was also be displayed on your Steam profile. Keep in mind though, playtime tracking is not available for games which are not activated or purchased through Steam.

If the title of the application or game is displaying incorrectly on your Steam library, you can adjust it by right clicking on the name and selecting "Properties". From this drop-down menu you're also able to remove the shortcut if you've previously uninstalled it.

From the "Properties" window you can then adjust the name. Whatever you put in this field is what will display on your friends list and profile when you have the application or game running.

Trying to add a game but I am unable to find it at all. I'm trying to create a separate version of the game that isn't modded but am unable to find the .exe file in the browser. In fact, I can't even find the steam folder under application support. I'm on Mac.

This doesn't work for Final Fantasy XI that's purchased from Square Enix store. I have added the game to my library but still the Steam community overlay does not activate even if I press Shift + Tab while in-game... I'd really need that in-game web browser!
