Did the massive vines cause the split? Or just stop the top from drifting away?

I blame the monotony on the size. I tried to challenge myself by making the biggest forest wilderness I possibly could without making it look barren. Glad you like the palm things. They where an attempt to lessen some of that monotonous feeling for a cheap price near the end.

Like the 'vine palms' and tree vines. A bit monotonous, but most normal landscape is.
