The Dog Companion is actually quite weak, and not really intended for use in combat (although it can still provide some assistance against weaker opponents.) Its main purpose is to provide an aura that boosts its allies Persuasion and Bartering abilities for non-combat situations. If you're looking for a canine familiar for combat, you'll want to use the Alpha Wolf Companion, which you can get at level one. Its main strategy in combat is to summon weaker beta wolves in order to deal a lot of damage through multiple units.
Thanks!
Due to balancing reasons, I do not want to remove the summoning requirements for the animal companions. Perhaps some time in the distant future I could make a separate version of the mod that includes this change, but for the time being I don't anticipate myself adding or changing anything.
