1) In the early game, a Solar Power Plant is VERY lucrative. Crystal runs for the SPP give more than 10 times as much PPU (profit per cargo unit) as runs between NPC stations, and unlike other factories SPP requires NO startup time or investment.
2) In the mid game, you should have enough cargo space that a few minutes of crystal hauling will let your SPP run on its own for several hours, especially if you dropped it near a Crystal Fab. Given that SPPs give much more profit/time than most stations, I believe it's well worth it.
3) In the late game, hauling crystals to all the SPPs in all your factory complexes is tiresome, but necessary, as the NPC SPPs alone probably won't provide enough energy cells. If you can include a Crystal Fab in each complex, it gets much easier.
Go and dock to a station and spend 10 Credits for Salvage Insurance.
