Introduction
Welcome one and all!

First off, this game has a lot of achievements (104) and some are difficulty based.

You will have to finish the game story 10 times (one time for each starting perk).
Your first playthrough, scavenging and killing and exploring everything will probably take 20 hours.

A fast "run to the end" run might take 5 to 7 hours but you'll die a bunch, since there are 4 hardcore achievements, you wont be able to do it that fast on hardcore, I dont think, if you do, respect.

A normal, cautious hardcore run should take from 12 to 15 hours or up to 30 if you are REALLY cautious.

There are 8 difficulty combinations and you have to do 8 runs, 1 for each combination.

Grind achievements carry over from playthrough to playthrough so make sure to spend those grenades and mines you have around before ending the game.

The hardest achievement is finishing the game in Impossible Hardcore which means all enemies are twice as hard and one death is game over! So I suggest you focus your first couple of playthroughs on learning how to move, what to use, where to go.

Since you need to finish the game 10 times, there is no point in starting in the highest difficulty setting unless you are a masochist, which.. fine I guess. I personally played Civilian Melee Normal non-hardcore my first playthrough, took me around 20 hours, I explored everything.

The game is really hard at the start while you build up levels and teammates, dont get discouraged if you lose a lot in the first areas.

Don't bother hoarding things in the Prologue, you will lose everything so just use all bullets, grenades, etc to your heart's content.

You also dont get hungry or anything but you will need serums to stay alive which can be farmed from infected's blood to some extent, its not that worrisome but something to keep track of.

Around at the 60% game progression mark, being infected stops being a problem.

You would think the infected spawn infinitely from holes but thats not the case, sometimes it feels that way though, dont be discouraged.

Accuracy/Attack is very important since every hit you miss is an opportunity for your opponent to hit you since they get a little stunned every time one of your hits lands.

Use choke points like building entrances and the like to avoid getting surrounded by hordes, avoid hordes by being as quiet as possible, specially in hardcore mode.

There are no multiple save files per profile but you can make more than one profile if you want to have multiple unfinished games.

Read this guide, its good:
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=399144826

Started this game back in 2018 but just now (2022) decided to try and 100% it.
Honestly, the UI is not that good, specially for my aging eyes and I feel text is tiny but the game is good nonetheless. It also crashed a bunch but I didnt lose much progression.

One time, the game froze and when it unfroze, I was dead.. so, if the game freezes, its best to quickly close it, specially if you are on hardcore.

I liked this game and if you like zombies and diablo-like RPGs, you should give it a try!
Tips and Advice
This thread might help:
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/293460/discussions/0/558755529995561486/

  • Go to options and modify the brightness to see them zombies sneaking to you.
  • You can also change the key bindings, toggle run should be in an easy key for you.
  • Press down on the shift button while clicking on Transfer to move a whole stack.
  • Check your stamina, you cant melee as fast/hard when tired.
  • Your teammates do not consume ammo OR stamina OR get fatigued.
  • You can turn down/off several graphic options but leave ragdoll physics on, its super fun :)
  • Read books instead of selling them.. they give you XP AND boost your INT stat.
  • Scavenging points are not always easily seen, always try and get close to cars/bins just in case.
  • You should see small sparkles near scavenge able places.
  • Items dont disappear from the map unless you load another area.
  • You can avoid a lot of damage by fighting while walking backwards.
  • You can hit and be hit across that fence, be careful.
  • The game crashed a lot for me when in fullscreen mode, if this happens to you often, go windowed.
  • When you are in the character/inventory windows, you will notice some arrows to the sides of the window title, these are to switch between your party members, so if youre alone, they do nothing.
  • Right clicking on items brings up a lot of options, including making a party member's weapon the active one.
  • The F key (pick up loot) and the G key (throw grenade) are next to each other by default.
  • You can pick up barrels to relocate them using the Space bar.
  • Some doctrines use the highest rank in the party(it says so in the description), avoid buying a doctrine someone else has.
  • Quest requirements (like killing unarmed) can be done by all the team not just the MC
  • Accept trainer quests even if you dont use the skills, the research reward can be used elsewhere.
  • Trainer quests are always the same, you can plan ahead.
  • When a teammate has a broken weapon, an icon appears next to their portrait.
  • Lockers can store your items but they dont share magic space with one another.
  • You regain all your HP and Stamina when entering early trade shops.
  • You are going to have a bad time if your weapon level is 7 or more levels below the area level, you can check the area level in the world map.
  • Keep that weapon/enhancement that adds weakness, weakened bosses go down faster, switch to main weapon once its weakened.
  • Enemies respawn but salvageable places do not.
  • Buy repair kits whenever you can, when you can afford them.
  • Durability matters in weapon value.
  • Repairing broken rare/elite weapons before selling them might be worth it.
  • The "Barter" doctrine only works for the one who learned it, so make sure (s)he buys/sells everything.
  • Its worth to keep a low level weapon to repair constantly so everyone can learn the 1st doctrine in Mechanical.
  • "Defend the Area" quests are more like "Survive waves" than defend.
  • If you shift+click an item in your inventory, it will get scrapped, this happens with items in an extra backpack even though you are trading, so get them out before selling them.
  • Never forget to get close to the subways so you can return later, specially in safe zones.

Point of No Return
After Staten Island, going into the Bunker and using the radio ends the game.
However, after the ending, you can load your last save and get out of the bunker to do whatever you still need to do.
Yeah, that Brooklyn area in the map really got me wondering.

Saving
I was pretty confused how the game saved and how to continue, so I made this part.

The game autosaves and its only 1 save file so dont be afraid to quit to main menu right away if things go south, if the game saves while you are almost dead.. tough luck, good practice for hardcore, I guess.

The game saves at special times in the story, when you move to a new map and each time you enter a *new* building. Entering a building for now is the best way to save your game. There's no manual way of saving the game because of certain aspects of how the game functions underneath.

I have also noticed the game saves when you exit to the main menu but sometimes it doesnt work, its just still weird.

As to continue a game, just click on the RIGHT side of the row/option you want.

If you crash and feel like the game wont continue, try and exit the area and re-enter and then go to the objective you crashed at.

Training and Rank up
There are 2 rank ups you can buy for your skill sets.
So, in safe zones, you will find trainers, they sell these rank ups but ONLY after you do their quests, so, on top of having to pay Serum, you need to spend time to get their quests done.
When you rank up, a lot of abilities can be upgraded using research points.
When you pay for a skill set rank up, all your teammates get the upgrade.
Focus on 3 skill sets: main weapon, survival and leadership.
You can see where the trainers are by looking at the world map.

Doctrines will flash on and off when they can be learned or upgraded.

Transfer books to teammates so they can learn a doctrine or switch to them in the trading interface.
You cannot reset or re-spec the doctrines you have chosen, choose wisely.
Teammate's doctrines can sometimes be reset if you dismiss them, go somewhere else, come back to their original place to re-recruit them.

Nighttime and Sleep
Fighting at night is very bad, avoid.
You still get infection per hour while sleeping but the XP bonus and being able to see who you fight is better than avoiding sleep.
Sometimes the visual prompt to sleep on a bed doesnt show up, press space anyway.
Most beds near NPCs can be used, just move around and try.

Speedrun? Info
You can just run away in most cases and continue the game.
Shops items and Drops are bound by the level of the area not your own, so if you manage to run all the way to Jersey at level 8, you can find lvl 30+ items there.

You can almost run all the way to the end, although, getting your bro to safety is a pain in the ass when you get 1 shotted and you also need to kill Monk (a L42 boss) for a key, took me 10 minutes to kill him (I was level 10), stunlock him with 2 machine guns and a flamethrower, he will die eventually.

Takes around 4 to 6 hours if you do it like this, you'll die a bunch.
Respawning from "Last visited house" actually means, last autosave, not necessarily a house.

Here is a video of my Staten Island on easy mode, around the 5 hour mark, i just ran and did the minimum quests, like mentioned before, the only enemy you have to kill is Monk, the rest, you can run all the way to the ending.

https://youtu.be/ESskWMyPZIk

Healing, Stamina and Defense/Armor skills will help you a lot.
How to use a Serum to reduce infection
In order to cure yourself just press Ctrl to pause the game and click on the syringe Icon in the bottom left corner. Your infection rate must be above 25%, a shot will cure 25% each time you use serum, the next shot will cost 1 more serum each time. The first shot costs 3 serums which is a lot when you are starting out, dont linger in the first areas and hurry to get past the sewers ASAP being infected 50%+ will suck, trust me.

When you get to Safe, which is the zone after the sewers, talk to Andrea to get her quest then go to the next zone (Park) to try to recruit her as fast as possible, her ability will reduce your infection rate by half!

You can also find infection kits which reduce infection by 25%, save these for when your serum shot cost around 25 to 40 serums each.
After getting to Newport shelter I was scavenging those kits a lot.

Storyline spoilers ahead regarding being infected:

Before I got the cure, my injection cost was around 25 serum per shot but I had over 1.5k serum and around 35 infection kits, so dont worry about this too much.

You get the cure after going to Ellis Island then Bayonne Streets.
Man, I almost cried being able to use the subway without having to pay infection.

Important Notes
If you dont have space for the companion, make sure to tell him you will use their services later, then you can dismiss your current companion, talk to the new companion again and recruit him/her by using the recruit tab in the lower right corner.

To recruit someone, a button will appear in the bottom right corner of the dialogue window if that NPC is recruitable.

If the button is greyed out, it means your squad is full, there are 2 doctrines that give you +1 to squad size, you will need intermediate Leadership to get the +2 which can be bought at the Church after doing the trainer's quest.

A teammate's second ability unlocks after the teammate levels up X number of times with you, not sure about the exact number, maybe 5 or 6 levels, I think...

If you dismiss a party member, you can find them again later at the place you first met them.
A dismissed teammate who returns to their starting position will lose all their inventory items and might get their doctrines reset, including the ones you bought.

Inactive teammates still level up while benched.

Gobber
Kill Gobber

You can find Gobber as the boss from the Prologue, just whack him until he dies.

Kill Beizel

Location: First Area of the game.
Use the barrels around the arena wisely as you move towards the other side where a new friend can help you kill it.

Coloth
Kill Coloth

Location: Sewers (2nd area of the game)
The camera really messes with your perspective, he basically fires slow moving fireballs in two modes, if he has his arm pointing upwards, its like fire bombs which can also hit him. If he is pointing forward, its like firebullets so be keen to dodge. I'd use ranged weapons here in hardcore but melee is doable.

You will see a book on the ground nearby, dont fight at night!

These dont stack.. meaning you need to finish the game at least 8 times.. but because of the perks, thats 10 times for you, yeah, have fun.

So take some time to decide which perk you will use to which difficulty run.
I recommend Chieftain for BOTH Impossible runs, hell, use it for both Hard runs too.
You can speedrun the easy mode in 4 to 6 hours.

Hardest part of the game is the start, you can die quick-fast and every time you do, your infection goes up a lot, in hardcore, its permadeath.

Yep, you need to finish the game 10 times.
Average run is around 16 hours, 5 to 7 if you speed it nonhardcore.

8 Difficulty achievements dont stack, so try and finish a run with a different perk and a different difficulty. Chieftain is the best perk imo.

Classic
Finish the game without using any unique weapon

Very recommended to go for this on your easy nonhardcore run.
You will fail this achievement if you pick up a unique gun!
You must fail all unique weapon quick events to prevent grabbing a unique weapon.

If you start a quick event, pause the game with Ctrl, check the rewards, if its a unique weapon, just fail it.
Quick Events
Quick little timed* challenges that give you unique weapons or extra serum/scrap, very beneficial or even crucial, thee weapons sell well.

*Most are timed, with a few exceptions.

These can only be done the first time they trigger, so if you die or reload, they're gone.
I'll list them as I found them.

You can pause the game and the timer will pause too.

All quick events always give out the same reward.

Upper NY: East Side
Kill 10 halflings
After going through two houses
Reward: Scrap and Serum

Kill Beizel
After entering his arena, use your friend with the gun to kill him quicker, use first aid kits to not die.

Upper NY: East Side Sewers
Kill Coloth
While exploring the sewers to the east then north, you will pass a flame inside a red bar cage, that's when you have to get ready because ahead, it's the boss. You have 40 seconds or so to kill him, use explosives and keep moving, if you stay put for too long, chances are you gonna die.

Central Park
Survive
NW from the entrance, near the center of the map, south of the metro station, if you go inside a house that has a fire in the middle, the doors will close and you will have to survive for a minute, lots of zombies, around 60.
Reward: Endurance XP, +5 Armor and Defense

Kill Infants
Inside the park, you will find a book about them on the ground, nearby 2 infants will spawn, they are super tough if you dont have enough DPS (50+) and they hit like a truck.

MKSC

Kill 2 infesters
In the middle of the map, inside the northernmost house.

Kill Murthog
He is on the street, west of the subway station, he hits hard but has low accuracy.
You have about a minute to kill him, you can lure him to the NPCs nearby for help, maybe.

Kill 3 Elite Busters
SE corner of the map, east of the exit to the hospital.
These guys can 1 shot you if they charge and ram you first, so dodge or dont let them have enough space to run at you.

Flatiron Center

Kill 10 infected with pistols
By the east entrance of the camp (north of the sewer exit).
Teammate kills with pistols add to the count, you have 2 minutes.

Flatiron Center Sewers

Kill Gunther
You have 1 minute, he is to the NE of the map, it uses flamethrower.

Bellevue Hospital

Find the subway
*Pause the game, look at map.
Go west (straight, the street will be blocked, go around that).
Pretty easy event.

Alphabet City

Kill Carrie
Carrie can be found near a crossroads east of the metro, almost at the center-north of the map, south of a broken down tank.

Bellevue Subway

Run!
You have 1 or 2 minutes to get to the exit, open the map and check.
If you have Tommy, you can use his Cartographer skill to your advantage.
Go east then a little south to some tunnels, east again then SE along a long tunnel which will curve south until you reach the exit.

BethIsrael Medical Center

Kill Lisard
Found west of the entrance, you might need to have Andrea's tissue sample quest active.

BethIsrael Sewers

Kill 15 infected without using kits or water
Andrea might auto-use a kit and you will fail this event.

Kill Realdead Man
Found north of the Holland exit, you need to have Andrea's tissue sample quest active.
If when you enter the room, the event doesnt trigger, try moving around the room's door until it does.

Holland Tunnel

Kill 5 Mantis and run to the exit
You got 3 minutes. Go straight! hurry!
Mantises are the tall guys, think slenderman.

Holland Tunnel Exit

Finish pain quest before time expires
Given to you by Jim, to spawn him, you must survive and complete the 3 enemy waves at Holland Tunnel Entrance, once you are at the Holland Tunnel Exit, he spawns on the middle north corner of the map. He gives you a very hard fetch quest, get ready to run, the morphine is found in the kitchen, scavenge the counters nearby. You have 200 seconds, its advisable to clear the house before starting the quest but leave the scavenging points in the house undisturbed.

Newport Shelters

Kill Vilebyrd without dying
One of the few strange non-timed events, he hits hard and has mad HP regen but he can get stuck trying to get out of the house so, yeah, get out of the house and kill him from outside.
You can pick up the injured man with the space bar, take him to the bed in the shield icon to the south.

Jersey Medical

Kill Hunterlag
He spawns NW of the hospital but if you come from the direction of the subway, he might spawn far from you, making this timed challenge way harder since you have to deal with Krass too.

Ellis Bridge

Kill Renan without using first aid kits
This boss is west of the exit to Elliss Island, no time limit.
Turn Andrea's autoheal/autorevive off.

Bayonne Streets

Kill Freddy
He has tons of Armor and has Martha (another boss) with him. You have around a minute.
They can be found around the center of the map.

Bayonne Sewers

Kill Monk
Like Freddy, has tons of armor. Bring out your armor piercing weapons.

Bayonne Bridge

Kill Child
He is near the Bayonne Tunnel, you have 60 seconds.

Staten Island Bridge

Kill Guardian without using first aid kits.
He is in the middle of the map along with other 2 bosses (Crawler and Big Brother), you have 3 minutes. Remember to turn Andrea's auto heal/revive off.

Staten Island

Kill Kramer
Event starts after entering the fence, after fighting Mantis Aberration.
You have 60 seconds. He is a little bit NW of the entrance.
Bunny (another boss) might join the fight if you dont wait for him.

But her second ability is "Medic" which has also nothing to do with reducing the infection rate.

"Her ability seems to be "helping hand" - reviving fallen squad members. It does not say something like reducing infection rate. Is it a hidden ability?"

Each teammate have 2 abilities, the second one will unlock after the teammate will spent enough time in your party.

When you get to Safe, which is the zone after the sewers, talk to Andrea to get her quest then go to the next zone (Park) to try to recruit her as fast as possible, her ability will reduce your infection rate by half!"

oh! Thank you for making the game!

It was fun, although I wish the ammo would be autolooted like blood, its a pain going everywhere pressing F, haha. One of the reasons I liked unarmed/melee better.

Im still not done with the game, Ill be around for the next few weeks, thanks for leaving a comment!
