Originally posted by OXCOM developers:
OpenXcom is an open-source clone of the original UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-Com: UFO Defense in USA), licensed under the GPL and written in C++ / SDL. It was originally founded by SupSuper in February 2009, and has since grown into a small development team surrounded by a very supporting community.

The goal of the project is to bring back the tried and true feel of the original with none of the issues. All the same graphics, sound and gameplay with a brand new codebase written from scratch. This should give it:

Fixability: Play the game natively without any need for emulators or fancy hacks, with none of the limitations and bugs that plagued the original. No more 80-item-limit, personnel limits, funding overflows, disconnected facilities, broken proximity grenades, floating soldiers, etc.
Moddability: Tweak the game to your heart’s content. Sure the original was pretty good, but maybe you just think it could be that bit better. A nicer base layout, better laser weapons, maybe challenge yourself with a custom game mode, or just put in all the crazy stuff you’ve always wanted! None of it is hardcoded.
Flexibility: Port the game to any platform you like, customize it to your liking, or use it to make your own far-fetched remakes. The code is fully documented and open-sourc so anyone can take a crack at it.
Step-by-Step
1. You'll need an unmodded version of UFO: Enemy Unknown / X-COM: UFO Defense.

2. Download the Windows Installer O-COM[openxcom.org] (a.k.a. Open-XCOM). Don't worry it's available on every OS imaginable, even Haiku, but this guide is aimed at Windows users.

3. Follow the instructions and when they ask for a game folder choose:
[...]steam\steamapps\common\xcom ufo defense\XCOM

4. Play O-COM 'til your eyes bleed.

PS. You can always manually extract the files (with WinRar or 7-zip) into the XCOM folder and play as well.

Hey rodrigo, I hope you're subbed to this thread;
There should be quite a few ways to get it to run on Linux, one of them being going on openxcom(dot)org(slash)git-builds and selecting the Linux icon, then downloading one of the appimages offered there.
If you just want them from another place, I found appimages for it via aur(dot)archlinux(dot)org(slash)packages(slash)openxcom or the same link, but openxcom-git.
I'd personally recommend getting the package from the ArchLinux user repository, specifically openxcom-git.

In the OpenXCOM forums, there is a thread also discussing this, via the link openxcom(dot)org(slash)forum(slash)index(dot)php?topic=8123.0

And lastly, someone did make a better explanation for Linux users; On the subreddit for OpenXCOM, there is this thread, made with Ubuntu in mind: reddit(dot)com(slash)r(slash)OpenXcom(slash)comments(slash)f6h0g0(slash)are_there_instructions_for_how_to_install_on
Hope this helps.

This is very difficult to get to work on Linux. I gave up when reading the instructions poorly written.

Anyone else have crashing issues with certain resolutions on OpenXcom? There are a few resolutions like 1280x600 that cause it to crash on the MicroProse logo, and I have to do a fresh reinstall to get it back to default 640x480.

I would refer you to OCOM's website. Sorry!
