High Power Faith Build Early!

This describes the best and fastest way to get Lightning Spear, one of the only offensive miracles and a very damaging spell overall.

Starting Out

Start as a cleric, take the master key, and clear the asylum. When you get to firelink, grab any of the surrounding Souls of a Lost Undead or kill a hollow. Level faith three times.
Next, take the elevator down from firelink. Turn left immediately and grab the Soul of a Nameless Soldier. Optionally, run down to New Londo Ruins, and grab the Firekeeper soul on the end of the thin walkway.
Take the back way to Blighttown, to the right of the elevator outlet. Grab the soul behind the door, and run down to the undead dragon. Grab the soul by his foot first, then grab the Astora's Sword and the Dragon Crest shield. At this point, you should only have a couple hundred souls, so dying is not an issue.

Undead Burg

Once you have gathered the soul packets and have died or otherwise made your way back to Firelink, pop the souls. Level dexterity to 10 so you can use your new sword, and equip the sword and shield. You should have some extra souls, so level endurance, vitality, or faith at your discretion. Then, make your way through undead burg as normal, gathering as many souls as possible. Kill the Black Knight for 800 extra souls. Kill the Taurus Demon, and talk to Solaire to get the White Soapstone.
Cross the Hellkite bridge. If you sprint to the stairs on the right and immediately roll at the gap, you will avoid taking damage from the fire.
Run down, kick the ladder, and level faith as many times as you can.
You can run out onto the bridge to get the drake to breathe fire and kill the hollows. This will net 555 souls every time.
You should have close to 25 faith by now. This is our end goal.

Sunbro and Damage Galore

Run out onto the bridge to aggro the drake, and hide in the pocket. Wait until he jumps down, and sprint past him. Grab the two items on the bridge; the claymore and the soul. Run into the bonfire room, and the dragon will leave you alone.
You should have enough souls to get to 25 faith. This is the amount needed to join the covenant and use sunlight spear. If you don't, you can kill a couple hollows or the black knight at the top of the tower just up the stairs from the bonfire room.
At this faith range, the canvas talisman that the cleric starts with has the best possible magic adjust.
Join the covenant with 25 faith, and enjoy your absurd damage.

Optional Overpowering

After obtaining sunlight spear, we can begin looking for the next damage tier. This section details the best way to get Great Lightning Spear without having to farm the sunlight maggots in Lost Izalith.
Sunlight Spear will usually do between 350 and 400 damage depending on the enemy's resistances. This will destroy the Belltower Gargoyles. If you leave your summon sign in the vacinity of the Gargoyles boss room, you will quickly be summoned since this is a starting area, and since your summon signature is so brilliant. If you free Lautrec and get his reward, and use Solaire as a summon for your own fight, you can quickly amass 10 sunlight medals to give to the statue. This will get you great sunlight spear, which will do even more damage. Be aware that it requires 30 faith to use.

Grabbing the Astoras straight sword and the shield early on will hinder the coop side of the game.

Astoras straight sword is considered a +5 weapon, upgrading it to +2 is fairly easy, and that makes it equivalent to a +9 weapon. Since matchmaking uses the higher weapon level ever obtained, having a +9 weapon early game will make you only have some decent coop in the depths/blighttown and onward. If the character doesn't have big soul levels either (25-40 - Depths / 25-45 - Queelag).

Coop helping other kill area bosses is far more rewarding than getting OP early on:
- Faith requirement for joining the Warriors of Sunlight goes down by 5.
- Surplus of souls, easily farmable.
- Sunlight medal farm if the host summons a Sunlight warrior. Or if you are one already.
- Farm titanites and humanity while waiting to be summoned.

Use the surplus souls to buy everything you can, spells, rings, consumables.

I learned this the hard way.

A shortcut to avoid some grinding is simply put your white soap sign before the gargoyle; every successful boss kill where you get summoned will lower the covenant requirement by 5 (it works for any area, but the gargoyle are some of the most popular coop spots and also near the altar).

So by just leveling to 20 FAITH and doing one coop gargoyle, one can enter the covenant and have enough stat to attune lightining spear

I almost spat my drink and went to this guide as fast as possible when I saw how to get sunlight spear "Early" which is only obtainable after beating the last boss, only to be disappointed :(

though great guide for new people :)

yeah thats just normal lightning spear, great lightning and sunlight lightning are both better spells

While Lightning Spear is pretty good early game, Sunlight Spear is only obtainable after killing Gwyn and trading his soul at the altar in NG+

sunlight spear is accesible by getting 50 faith and using the soul of gwyn, lord of cinder on the statue at +1 rank (when you get greater lightning spear)
