That is a huge map of Greenland, that also includes Iceland, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Island.
In order to make random start location work correctly, you have to download the following mod, which solve problems about it (it is a really plain mod) : http://www.picknmixmods.com/mods/CivV/Maps/Random%20Start%20Position.html

The green and snowy country

Will you choose exploring the great Hinterland, that inlandsis made of ice and snow which surely hides some mysteries ? Or will you prefer staying in the welcoming fjords of the island ?
Anyway, this land is more white than green, and it will be a challenge to develop your civilization !

A true green land
Because of the global warming, many lands have become unhabitable. But some others like Greenland got greener and from now on attract people running away their now desertic countries in order to settle this new promise land !
In this second map of Greenland, most of ice has been removed, only the northern part of the island keeps icy and a part of the now decadent inlandsis which made way for a central lake where rest the relics of a snowy past.

Hello @jar.econ, it is due to a civ V bug, you need a mod to solve this problem (it is a long known problem for custom maps). You can download it here : http://www.picknmixmods.com/mods/CivV/Maps/Random%20Start%20Position.html
I will add it in the mod description, as you aren't the first to ask it

So how do I choose start location? I've tried to start new games several times, but the spot was always the same, at the south edge of Greenland.

Hello @htdang, in fact I did it because without it, the half of civilizations and city-states spawned in Iceland as it is the only "big location" with grass, so for a good start.
But regarding starting locations, it is known that their are totally predictable, you need a dll mod in order to make it work as it should do (it is easy to find it on the internet)

Played it twice now and it's a lot of fun. It's too bad there are only a few set places that players will start. Totally understandable considering all of the habitable locations are along the periphery.

I've played it with 9 and 10 players and I can pretty much tell where the AI players are. =)

Hey @Conservative critters, I have added to the mod a map of Greenland without inlandsis, only the northern part of the map keeps some snow
