Introduction

In Nine Parchments, you can find 3 chests in most levels (with 1 or 0 in Boss levels). These chests will usually contain Experience Points, but it is also where you will find Hats. The amount of Experience Points and what Hats you can find will vary, depending on the difficulty you are playing on.

Easy - 50 Experience Points
Normal - 61 Experience Points
Hard - 72 Experience Points
Hardcore - 101 Experience Points
Repeat Hat - 100 Experience Points (console versions only)

As for which Hats drop from the chests, playing on Hard or Hardcore mode will be how you’ll find the rarer Hats. And with the exception of the Boss-specific Hats, you can find any Hat in any chest.

Stage 1: A Wizarding Examination

In the intro stage, you’ll see lots of yellow "!" that serve as tutorial messages. The one chest in the level is near the end of the stage and has a yellow "!" over it.

Stage 3: Don’t Forget Beachwear

Stage 4: Seafood, Anyone? [BOSS]

This is the first Boss stage (you’ll encounter a Boss every 4 levels). Once the boss is defeated, you’ll find the chest right near the Exit Portal. This chest is the only chest that contains “The Castaway’s Coronet”.

This is the second Boss stage. This is one of two stages where there are actually no chests.

Stage 10: Dusk Falls on the Tundra

Stage 11: Shivering Steps

Stage 12: The Icefalcon’s Crest [BOSS]

This is the third Boss stage. Again, once the boss is defeated, you’ll find the chest right near the Exit Portal. This chest is the only chest that contains “The Tempest Tiara”.

Stage 14: Endless Snowbanks

Chest 3: This chest is a little trickier. Instead of just sitting out waiting to be found, you have to first extinguish the torch at the very end of the level. Once you do, the chest will appear next to the Exit Portal.

Stage 16: The Glacial Den [BOSS]

This is the fourth Boss stage. This is second of two stages where there are no chests.

This is the fifth Boss stage. Again, you will find the chest after the boss is defeated, but it’s slightly off to the left from the Exit Portal. Unlike the other Bosses, this chest does not have a Boss-specific Hat.

There's an internal cooldown timer regarding hat drops. If you just opened a chest on the level that got you a hat, you won't drop another hat for a while, even if you kill a boss. So you'd better not open chests for like 15 minutes (wild guess, could be more or less) before killing a boss and opening it chest.

I've beaten the first boss twice now, and the chest did not drop the Castaway's Coronet. I've also had several times where I pick up a hat, and it doesn't appear in my inventory (the forest green hat, I think). Is there a fix for this?

Stage 14. The last chest is located at the very end of the level, after the "circle of endness" near the pillars.
