Intro
  • So first off i have never made a guide before so this might not be the best

  • Second i cant use screenshots without breaking the rules i believe so it may be unclear as to what i mean at times and im sorry about that

  • I will try to keep adding to this as i progress to make things clearer and to correct mistakes - if you notice any mistakes please tell me and i will try to fix it

  • This is not 'the best way to start' its just how i started and what i have learned from figuring things out myself without guides or videos
Starting off
So i cant really include screenshots because of the rules of alpha so i will try to describe things as best i can.

When choosing a server the main things to look out for is if the server is official or unofficial and how many people are on each team.
Under the 'players' tab there will be three different symbols each a different colour going from purple to green to orange. This shows how many people are on each team. I chose the orange team for a few reasons
  • there was one on purple, three on green and one on orange (if i remember correctly) and i didnt want to be on the biggest team because i wouldnt want to make it a 1v4v1

  • and i also prefer orange to green

so when i first spawned i was in a field somewhere and there was a rock and one other person there. When i pressed e on the rock it told me something about a mirror realm but i died to a wolf when the menu was open and when i respawned i was in a base which i thought was someones personal one and not our teams one so i was scared to do anything and was constantly trying to figure out why i couldnt build my own little shack

DISCLAIMER: I chose the orange team and have not seen anything from the other teams hence i dont know if the layout is different

There should be a big wall around an area which you can walk through. Monsters cannot go through these so if your getting attacked a good way to escape is by getting into your area again
I started off by making all the tools but i had to 'borrow' flint, vines and such from my team as i couldnt find a way to get any - later i realised you right click to get different resources like metal from copper ore, flint from rocks and a certain variant of vines from bushes - and began getting wood and stone. You first want to build all the huts around the place like the hunter one and the sawmill as this will unlock new crafting areas and lets you make new useful weapons and armour

By this point you should have found some sparks of genius which you might not see an aparent use for yet but keep them for later as it saves a lot of time
Leveling
I recommend making a bow and a ton of arrows for leveling
I spent the majority of my time killing low level pigs and wolves to level up by simply using a bow and this seemed like the best way to level up until I then crafted some better bows and even crossbows which let me take down bigger monsters and level faster

Another way to level is to pick flowers.

This may seem laborious however if you collect enough flowers, bushes and even berries/watermelon you will get shards and also exp very fast not just from collecting it but from crafting afterwards
By leveling this way you can also collect the lost blossoms and get the residue for crafting
Sparks Of Genius
Each tool gives different sparks from what i can tell - sickle gives mystical ones which are purple and axes give red ones for adventuring

these can take a while to get as I spent about three hours farming with a sickle to get sparks to level up a skill so i can move on to taming

You use the sparks at the four rocks standing next to each other with a spinning one on top and you use them to level up and learn new items like siege weapons, taming tools and weapons/armour
Talents
here[rend.gamepedia.com] is the wiki page on talents to give a brief understanding if you need it

ok so i went with the assassin tallent tree as it gave cool abilities to do with archery which i love in games but it also gave things like double jump and a teleport ability which are super useful for running away or for fighting bigger monsters
I also went for shaman but have not leveled anything as i dont have enough points yet but i chose shaman for the taming aspects and also the ability to summon a bow

I am hesitant to say that i recommend going for the assassin but honestly i love being able to double jump away from attacks and the different abilities to do with archery are very good for helping fight
Building
In order to build you need to create a hammer by making a pick first which unlocks it. You can then press 'B' to bring it out. The rest of the commands are on screen so i shouldn't need to address them.

My team (aka just me because the rest sat back and did nothing) built a large wall surrounding our tree-stone thing at the max distance and are now working on making it another story so assassins cant double jump over. one cool thing you can do is use the stairs frame as actual stairs and not waste materials upgrading it.

That's as far as I have gotten with building so i will update this once I do more
Souls
Souls let you tame from what i can gather and are also a way to win.
You get souls by collecting these blue flowers (lost blossoms) from using your sickle on bushes which when you eat give you souls. To deposit them you go to your tree-stone thing and press 'E' this will give you a bowl filled with some afterjuice as i like to call it and you want to hold onto it as it becomes useful afterwards.

To win i believe you need to gather 10000 souls which light up the huge tree but im not sure if thats all thats to it
Skills
You level up your skills by doing things that correspond aka cutting trees will level up Woodcraft.
When you get to level five you can choose between two different perks then at level ten, twenty five and lastly fifty.

To access these you simply go to your skills tab in your menu and double click on the skill you have leveled to five

The skills are also in different sections which mark how you level them up too
  • combat
  • crafting
  • adventuring
Hunting
When you kill some monsters - like boars - you can get items such as the 'Grunter Potbelly' or 'Wolf Abdomen' which at first may seem useless as you cant cook them however if you click on them then click 'salvage' they can drop useful items such as leather scraps or flowers/plants

As i said before pressing RMB does a different harvest option. When you have killed a monster use the RMB to get leather scraps instead of meat.
