The Basics of Named Captains
Firstly, to start your search for named captains, you must look on the right kind of islands, in the right kind of place. But don't worry, this guide will include everything you need to know to make finding and killing named captains easy. Named captains are only found on Tier 2 pirate islands, or Battlemaster Settlements. And, they're only found in pirate villages on the Tier 2 islands themselves. There are four different captains total. Once you actually kill one, you can sail away from that island, about 40 units should do, and come back and they should respawn. Once you spot a captain in a village, you need to find out who you're dealing with, since all the captains are different. You can try to find details, but we'll look into that later. Now that you know the basics, let's get into detail.
Finding Tier 2 Pirate Islands
Before you can go captain hunting, you need to find a Tier 2 Pirate Island, or Battlemaster Settlement. There are several ways to find these. You can ask the Innkeeper for directions to one. It'll be under "Directions to" then "Tougher Pirates". Make sure you've completed "Helping the Innkeeper" first, then he'll tell you coordinates to a Tier 2 island, for the next quest, "A Hat for a Hat". If you don't want to do that, you can also try to find a map to one. These can sometimes be found on Tier 1 islands. If you don't want to do either, there's one more way. You can try to find one the old fashioned way, simply just sailing until you find one. They're a lot more common after both coordinates are at least 25 units in both directions. Some distinguishable features of Tier 2 Pirate Islands are orange grass, tree stumps, lots of campfires, multiple villages, and the island itself are generally large and quite flat.
Finding the Captains
Now that you've found some Battlemaster Settlements, it's time to find a captain. Firstly, captains can only be found in pirate villages. As in Pirate villages on a Tier 2 Pirate Island. Once you've found one of those on the right kind of island, you're ready to find and fight a named pirate captain. Now, it isn't guaranteed that you'll find one, there's only a chance. I'd say 2 out of 3 Battlemaster Settlements should possess a named captain. But to actually find one, it's good to use a spyglass to observe the village from afar. Make sure to look for pirates that look significantly different and more detailed than the rest of the pirates. Once you think you've found one, move over to the village and engage the captain!
Fighting the Captains
Once you're sure you found a captain, it's time to fight him! A good starting plan is to take out all of the other pirates in the village and just in the immediate vicinity first, so your fight with the captain isn't interrupted and made harder than it has to be. Once you've done that, you can now engage the captain. To start, a good strategy would be to shoot the captain with poisoned arrows(you can make some by combining Black Flower Potions with Crude Arrows), using a Bandage or Strong Bandage, and charging into battle. I'd recommend if your health gets close to it's halfway point, you should definitely use a White Flower Potion or a Pristine White Flower Potion. You'll need a good weapon as well. Weapons like the Strong Pirate Axe or the Hefty Pirate Axe should do just fine, as they do quite a lot of damage and are easy to obtain, as they drop from both Tier 1 and Tier 2 pirates. Good armor is also a must. A full or close to full Battlemaster set are perfect, as the Battlemaster set has very high armor and the full set makes sprinting use less stamina, so that should be useful for getaways. Also, one last tip, if you are on low health and your White Flower Potions are still on cooldown, you can always run into the water, as the captain will not follow you there. So you can simply heal up, and get back into the fight!
