INTRODUCTION
Hello, before you start reading this guide, it is important you take in consideration that this guide was not intended to be an absolute guide, but more an article for those who believe that they have a basic understanding of surf, and are now ready to take it a step further.

About the author:
I have been surfing since late 2007, and have been following this surf style ever since. I felt like writing this guide in the hope of seeing more skilled surfers on the FFA servers.
.

This guide may be devoted to helping players IMPROVE their surf, not TEACH them how to surf, but I still think that having a full understanding of the basics is very important (Even though I know there are many skilled surfers out there!) So without further ado, please sit back, relax and enjoy this guide I have written for y'all.

I apologise for my grammar and/or spelling mistakes, but my first language isn't English :)
TO PREPARE
Before you start surfing there are some small tweaks you've gotta configure before getting stuck into this tutorial. Most of you are probably aware of these settings, but just to be sure I will show them below, so that everyone can follow.

Console
Enable your developer console through OPTIONS/ADVANCED/ENABLE DEVELOPER CONSOLE

Bunnyjumping
Set your mousewheel scrolling as your default method of jumping! *Also mentioned later in this post*

Turn binds
*Also mentioned later in this post*
Open console and type:
bind "key" "+right"
bind "key" "+left"

Yawspeed
*Also mentioned later in this post*
Yawspeed, for those who want to increase (higher yawspeed) or decrease (lower yawspeed) the speed at which the turning bind moves you at. I don't recommend increasing the number too much.

Open console and type:
cl_yawspeed #
Default is 210

Video options
Under Video options I would highly recommend that you turn Motion Blur OFF.

My own setup

Duck = SHIFT
Jump = MWHEELUP
Last weapon used = MWHEELDOWN
Use voice communication = SPACE
Chat message = ENTER
Use items buttons etc = MOUSE3 (mousewheel click)

bind "q" "+left"
bind "e" "+right"

Mouse: Razer Abyssus
This is a very high sense, and I do not recommend people using it unless, they feel comfortable with it!
3500dpi
1000Hz
Mouse sense ingame 2.14
Raw Input *ON* All other settings turned OFF!
TYPES OF SURF STYLE?
When joining a surf server it is important that you know the different types of surf before you aim to improve because there are many different skill sets required. There are not many players who can master all of these three styles, so choose after experiencing them all.

Skillsurf
Skillsurf is meant for players who want to prove themselves to be very adapt and good at a wide variety of maps. These types of maps can either be extremely easy, or incredibly difficult. Usually these maps are timed and the fastest time wins.
For a beginner I would not recommend starting surf on in this play style since it can be very frustrating for the first timers, though some of the easier skill maps could be a good starting point.

The skillsurf maps are also divided into tiers.
1 being the easiest, and 6 being the hardest.
Tier 6. Nope.
Tier 5. We're getting there.
Tier 4. For the average and more trained.
Tier 3. Most casual surfers are able to beat these.
Tier 2. Can differ between easy and a bit struggling for some.
Tier 1. Anyone should be able to surf this.

Common Skillsurf Maps
  • surf_fruits
  • surf _lore
  • surf_parrot_sellector
  • surf_ny_advance

Tricksurf
Tricksurf is freestyle surf on some of the more major combat maps, surfing from one place to the other following a 'trick description' in order to complete that given trick. This is probably the most fun way to start off because you can do everything at your own pace and you can choose what map/trick you want to work on.

Common Tricksurf Maps
  • surf_greatriver_xdre4m
  • surf_japan_ptad
  • surf_skyworld
  • surf_buck-wild

Combatsurf
Combatsurf is the most common surfstyle and was also where I started my own surf era. It is where I would recommend starting off because the element of shooting is still a part of the game so you don't have to fully rely on your skills as a surfer. There are many amazing surfers out there which are to be named, most of whom started out as a combat surfer, but I feel like if I were to list them on a blackboard here, it would simply leave others out and drama will appear against me and against this post. So I won’t.
Anyway combat surf = fun.

Common Combatsurf Maps
  • surf_machine2
  • surf_greatriver
  • surf_japan
  • surf_leet

Many of these maps I’ve listed under the 3 surf styles are not all to be listed! So please don’t hate on the maps used or the way they are listed, though I can change the order/names if you please.
HOW TO SURF?
When playing on a surf map it is important that you forget everything you've learned about de_ maps and all other game types! When entering a surf map, everything is about speed and how you handle each situation on the surf ramp. But before you get way too considered about this, lets talk about the basics.

You surf by pushing the side of your players’ body onwards the surf rail. Depending on which side you are pushing, you will be pushing the opposite of that directions key. In short, when being on the right side of the ramp press A and the left side D.

Here is a picture!

Now. It is not enough to just smash the buttons on the keyboard in hope of you getting anywhere. You will also have to use your mouse.
So before you panic when being on the surf ramp, focus on ONE thing, to get forward. Hold your hand calm and SLOWLY train yourself guiding your hand in circles, like in an “8” number.
It is important that you try not to focus too much on everyone around you but more on the surf you are doing. Relax and take your time, you have to keep pushing yourself and experiment with different ways that suits YOU. Now I don’t want all this to sound like a sexual intercourse lection for teens, but trust me. Give it time.

Lets move on!
HOW TO GET FAAAAST!
If this is your first time, you might be thinking how the hell am I supposed to be good at this, and the most common questions I get from new surfers are "how do I get the speed?" Well to be honest, everything is about training and how you handle it, but think about it like this. "It’s a water slighter combined with a gravity sling" - The better you make your curves, the faster and higher you will get.

Here is another picture.

(This picture is only a good example of how to get high up in the air!)
Explanation to this is the friction, the way air acceleration works together with the gravity is not anything that makes too much sense, but instead of thinking like a sling, you should be focusing on getting as much speed as possible AND THEN go for the flick, don't prepare yourself half ways through the ramp - do it right before the end to get maximum speed.

Another thing to keep in mind, is where you
position
yourself on the surf map.
When aiming for an object you got to loosen up your mind, do not focus too much on the aiming part but focus more on the circles and the movement you are doing. Aiming for an object will slowly come afterwards. Anyway! When aiming for an object it is important you place yourself on the
opposite
side of the object!

You might be asking why, but let me explain the reason for you son.

[EXAMPLE]
Lets say you want to hit an object that is in the far distance and you want to obtain most possible speed in order to get there. You’ll probably think, oy that’s no problem, I’ll just position myself on the side of the surf ramp that brushes closest up against the object so the distance will be shorter!

In this case you are WRONG! You got to focus on the acceleration and altitude. Instead of leaning yourself towards the object, try to focus on the right
“flick”
yes I marked flick because it is an important word to remember! Now instead of me jabbering too much, why not another picture?

BUNNY HOPPING
Bunny hopping is probably one of the most important things to control in a combat surf map. If you master this, you will master your strafing a lot better as well, you won’t die as much and you will impress your enemies with fast moving’s.

What is bunnyhopping?
Taken from Wikipedia “The term is most used in first-person shooters to refer to act of pressing the jump key while holding crouch and a movement key to move faster (especially when going down a slope) and/or to evade attacks more effectively.”[/h1]

Many combat surf servers provides with free “Autobhop” which regardless gives you the opportunity to help with your bunnyjump.
Though this is not provided on every server and many professional surfers are against this! So for the sake of them and for yourself, do not use it!
Instead
bind either mousewheel up or mousewheel down to your JUMP key.
You can configure that under your settings – keybindings – movement and control options.
ANGLE SURF
STRAFING
Yop, this guide also includes strafing.. Or at least the strafing I know..

Strafing is probably one of the hardest things to master in surf. Even as an experienced surfer myself haven’t mastered this way of gaining speed.

In short, strafing is a way of gaining speed in particular everywhere you are. It’s commonly used when jumping, but it can defiantly also be used while being airborne.

There are many ways of doing this, and I won’t recommend that you try this out unless you know what the heck you are doing! But give it a try.

The way I do it, which isn’t the best way of doing it and probably also one of the hardest ways, is to do it manually. You do this by smashing your fingers on A and D rapidly after each other while swinging your mouse to the rhythm.

There are also other ways of doing this.
And that is by using turn binds.

Turn binds are NOT any sort of scripts; scripts are something you manipulate the game to think. This is simply just changing the key binds to another action.

Go to your console ..
If you still don’t know how to open console or activate it, i will now go through a guide of how to…. !”#€%&/ GO GOOGLE IT!

Now, type this stuff.

“bind” “key” “+left”
“bind “key” “+right”

Key = the keyboard button assigned.

You can also enable these in the bottom of your key binding options under settings.
Depending on what mouse you have. I would assume that there are 3 (BEST) ways of adjusting them.
#1 way is the one I would recommend and is most used in combat surf.

“bind” “q” “+left”
“bind” “e” “+right”
If you like to keep your “e” key for the “use buttons/action key” then change it to “v”, I would recommend that you use “e”, and change the use key to another.

#2 the more cheesy way, but probably one of the better ways of doing it.
(ONLY USABLE WITH A MOUSE WITH MORE THAN 2 EXTRA BUTTONS!)

“bind” “mouse#” “+left”
“bind “mouse#” “+right”

# = mousekey number

#3 for skill and trick surf only! Not recommended if you play other gametypes!

“bind” “mouse1” “+left”
“bind “mouse2” “+right”

The way I personally started learning to strafe, was by playing the map scoutzknivez. The gravity change and airacceleration makes it easier to start strafing on a more settled plan where everyone can get a hang of it. I would recommend you try it out there.
RAMP STRAFING
Ramp strafing is a harder way of approaching the surf style, and is therefor also a technique that is hard to descripe in words.

Ramp strafing is a way of maintaining more speed while surfing down a bumpy ramp. If you do not ramp strafe you will slam into bumps and lose great amount of speed. This technique is commonly used in older surf maps, where the ramps are linked poorly together.

Ramp strafing is done by leaving the ramp right before a bump and then landing back on the ramp after the bump. However, when you land back on the ramp you have to land smooth, so you don’t just slam into the ramp and lose an even greater amount of speed.

WEAPONS
When playing combat surf it isn’t just enough to know how to surf. You also gotta be a good aimer.

The most common weapons used in surf are as following:
- Knife
- Deagle
- USP
- Glock
- Shotgun/M3
- AWP sniper

Thanks Dulce, and yeah, now it is skillsurf that is most common. It used to be early on back in CS:S until KSF made skillsurf more popular :)
