What is Konrad the Kitten?
We were often asked, how exactly the game is played. People have seen the trailer and the screenshots but ask themselves how this all goes together.

So I'll try to summarize the (kind of unusual) gameplay of Konrad the Kitten in this post.

First of all, the game is not a typical game that has level after level and is played through after a couple of hours. It's more comparable to a Tamagotchi (if you remember these little things from the past). So the cute little virtual kitten expects you to care for it day by day (or at least once in a while). Each day when you visit your virtual kitty, it has an amount of energy that can be used to do different things. After (usually) 20 to 30 minutes, the kitten will run out of energy and then ask you to come back the next day. Although some players don't like this, we designed this gameplay mechanic on purpose and it became one of the core elements of the game.
Let's get started
When starting the game for the first time, some things will be different and not as described here. This is because the tutorial kicks in and slowly shows you all things that are available and guides you through the first 5 minutes.

After that, when starting the game you will first wake up in the game setup which looks like a holographic room. The game tells you that you should clear some space around you and take a blanket or a cushion, sit down on the floor and make yourself comfortable. Yes that's right: The whole game is played sitting on the floor! That is important as most of the stuff in the game happens on the floor. To tell the game how high or low your real floor is, the floor needs to be calibrated. To do so, just hold your Controller on the ground inside the blue area.

After this short setup, you land in the main entrance area (we also call it the warp zone). As the game makes you sit on the floor, it does not have any artificial movement. Instead you can teleport into different areas. The warp zone connects these areas by providing teleporters that bring you to the different regions (the kitchen, bathroom, beach, etc.).

Yow you’ll probably noticed that you have a cute kitten in your right hand. When you lift the kitten, a thinking bubble will appear above the kitten’s head. This bubble shows the wishes, the energy and the needs of the kitten. So these are the things you need to care for! Wishes are shown in small heart icons. They are always related to a specific object, like “Cat wants to play with the smartphone.” Or “Cat wants to sleep in the box.”. The needs are shown below in little spheres. The larger the sphere, the bigger the need. Needs are more generic and can be fulfilled with different objects. Examples for needs are “needs to play” or “hungry / thirsty”.

Controls - no button to press
So now you want to care for the kitten. As there are only teleporters in the warp zone, you need to teleport to one of the areas, for example to the kitchen. The whole game is controlled with the kitten itself, you never have to press any button on the Controller. For going to the kitchen, you'll need to hold the kitten at the kitchen teleporter.

Inside the kitchen you'll find 4 interactive objects on the floor: a smartphone, a cat toilet, a food bowl and a box. When you hold the cat at one of the interactive objects, the cat is placed there and starts to interact with them. At the same time, a display will appear, showing the progress of the action and if this is currently good or bad for the kitty. After the kitten is done with it’s action, experience hearts will spawn. You need to collect these hearts to level up the kitten and unlock new items, areas and accessories.
Minigames
Sometimes instead of experience hearts, a fortune wheel appears. This yields the chance to win paw coins or start a minigame. There are 5 different minigames that all requires you to get active. With the kitten in your hands, you need to guide it in the minigames to hunt mice or fly through hoops or throw dishes from a table. Depending on the score you achieved, paw coins are spawned that you can collect as well.

Go visit the teddy bear shop to buy funny or cute accessories for your kitty. You may even change the color and pattern of the fur if you like to have a different cat.

Attributes
The evolution of your cat is measured in 3 major attributes: love, behavior and health. The love determines how many experience hearts are spawned after each action. Higher Love means leveling up faster. To raise the love you need to do stuff the kitten wants. (Fulfill the wishes.) Behavior determines the amount of wishes the kitten has at the same time. Its much easier to please a well behaved kitten, as it always has multiple things at the same time that makes it happy. To raise the behavior, you need to do things the kitten needs. (Fulfill its needs.) The health determines the energy the kitten has each day. When ignore urgent needs of the kitten, its health will drain. So the best you can always do is, letting the kitten make things that it both wants and needs.

When you leave the kitten alone, the attributes slowly change over time. The health will regenerate but the love and the behavior will decrease. So don’t let the kitten too long alone.
Plushy Mode
But wait! The coolest thing has not been mentioned yet! No matter where you are, you can always teleport to the shed. The shed acts as the options menu of the game. Besides switching language and turning sounds an music on and off, you can switch to Plushy Mode here.

When turning on Plushy Mode, the game restarts itself and shows you a short introduction video. You now need to attach the Controller on the backside of a plush toy or stuffed animal (yeah that’s right). Most easy way to do so is using rubber bands. After the Controller has been fixed on the plushy, you need to confirm this by holding the trigger for 3 seconds. This is the only time you need to press a button on the Controller. The game now starts in Plushy Mode and requests you to place the plushy on your real world’s ground. This calibrates the floor so that your real floor and virtual floor are perfectly synchronized. When you now place the plushy on your ground, it will stand on the virtual ground as well. If you want to have your kitten interacting with one of the objects, just place it next to it. So if you want your kitten to drink, just place it next to the water bowl. If you want it to play with the tablet, place it next to it. And if you want it to be cuddled, lift it up or turn it on its backside and hold it like a baby. It will start purring and start a “cuddle” action.

“Seeing is believing” won’t work here, you need to try Plushy Mode out to see how well it works and how cute it is. Synchronizing the virtual cat with the real plush toy makes your brain really believe to hold that cute comic kitten in your very own hands.
