Woodpecker Trial Guide *SPOILERS*
By EliteFerrex
Hello, EliteFerrex here, and this is my step-by-step guide to completing the Woodpecker Trial in Aggelos. Be warned that this guide may contain spoilers, so although I'll do my best to keep them at a minimum, proceed carefully!

1) Description
The Woodpecker Attack is a powerful 3-hit physical attack that's useful for taking out bosses that move slowly, or for taking out strong stationary enemies. It can be performed in the air, and makes you temporarily float in place while the animation is going off. Unlike the Mole and Flea attacks, this one doesn't come for free! You'll have to pass a series of trials in order to earn it. Get your controller ready, because you won't be able to use a keyboard for this one.

2) Prerequisites
In order to get the Woodpecker Attack, you'll need to have all of the following Items/Abilities:
  • Lightning Sword which is purchased from the weapon shop in Celestia Village for 50,000 Gems.
  • Mole Attack scroll already found in Bosco Cave prior to the Earth Temple.
  • Flea Attack scroll already found underwater immediately right of Lumen Castle's main gate.
  • Earth Ring which you should have already found from the Earth Temple.
  • Water Ring which you should have already found from the Water Temple.
  • Fire Ring which you should have already found from the Fire Temple.

3) Progression
To reach the Woodpecker Attack, you'll need to have progressed to Fira Village.
You can get here after passing through The Wall's main doorway, and climbing up and to the right past the Wild Boys and Rattlesnakes, as well as the second dimensional crack.
After reaching Fira Village, make sure you have the prerequisite items listed above, and get ready for some fairly challenging platforming!

Getting to the Woodpecker Trial
Starting from Fira Village
If you've already found the Angel Feather, you can teleport to Fira Village to get started. From there, you'll want to climb up and to the right to take the exit by the man leaning against the tavern building.

Next, you'll want to climb up and to the right until you reach a large wooden barrier. If you approach the barrier, you'll receive a message which states that the structure is made from old, dry wood. This is the first place we'll need our good friend the Fire Ring. Give the pillar a blast and wait for it to burn away, then proceed to the right.

To prevent yourself from taking as much damage as possible, immediately drop down the rock face below you. Don't go so far as to fall into the lava below.

Carefully make your way to the right across the lava, and you'll see the entrance to the Woodpecker Trial just ahead. Make your way inside.
Woodpecker Trial - First Challenge
Familiar Faces
Upon entering the Woodpecker Trial, you'll be greeted by an informational sign and a Woodpecker Statue. Get used to these, as you'll see them throughout the Trials, and they will be crucial to your success. The informational signs will provide hints as to how to complete each room. Stepping in front of a Woodpecker Statue will replenish your Magic, but NOT your health.

With that understood, proceed forward to the first challenge.

First Challenge - Master the Fire Ring
Immediately ahead is a metal gate. You'll need to use the Fire Ring here to create a portal through the gate, and then a second portal on the left side.

Jump into the left portal, and as soon as you exit the right portal, use the Flea Attack to carry you across the gap. If you did this correctly, you'll find yourself ready to enter the next room with the Second Challenge.
Woodpecker Trial - Second Challenge
Second Challenge - Two Rings

In this room, you'll see 3 contact switches: one on the upper left, and two close together on the lower right. To clear this room, you'll need to time use of the Fire Ring or Earth Ring to hit the upper left switch just before you use the Bubble Burst attack with the Water Ring to hit the other two switches.

To achieve this, you'll need to start by activating your water ring while standing on the highest platform (pictured above). Then, you'll have to jump to the right of the platform (holding the jump button so as to float slowly downwards using the bubble).

As you start to fall, you'll have to quickly turn around and use the Fire or Earth ring's power to hit the switch on the left. As soon as you shoot the Fire or Earth projectile, you'll need to drop down and trigger the Bubble Burst to hit the last two switches. It may seem difficult at first, but a few attempts should have you feeling like a pro in no time, and ready to proceed to the Third Challenge.
Woodpecker Trial - Third Challenge
Third Challenge - The Floating Free-Fall

This challenge is the first that might give you a bit of trouble. Here, we'll need the Water Ring and the Flea Attack to collect all of the glowing yellow orbs. It's actually quite simple, but requires precise timing on your control inputs to make sure you don't run out of time on your bubble.

Furthermore, if you miss any one of the orbs, you'll fall through the floor of the room, and out of the pipe back at the top. This will allow you to start over again. You can clear this room with only 1 Magic orb, but in case you run out, you can always return to the previous room to refill your Magic.

The trick to completing this Challenge is to avoid wasting time. You'll want to activate your bubble from as far over to the right as possible, and then jump off just before the little bubbles combine. This will maximize your descent time. Make sure you're holding the jump button, or you'll fall too fast and miss the orbs.

The orbs will mostly follow a zig-zag pattern to the right and left, but there are two sections that will require careful attention. After the first set of zig-zags, you'll come to a section with 5 orbs in a straight downward line. You'll need to release the jump button here and fall quickly to get all five, then be ready to hold it down again before you continue to the right. There is a very small amount of leeway here, so if you find yourself missing some of the orbs, try holding the jump button as soon as you get the 4th orb instead of the 5th.

After the drop, you'll need to zig-zag to the right and left, and at the very end of the fall, you'll see two orbs in an upward path. This is where you need the Flea Attack.

If you manage to position yourself correctly and use the Flea Attack at the right time, you'll nab the last two orbs, the floor beneath you will materialize, and you'll be ready for the Fourth Challenge.
Woodpecker Trial - Fourth Challenge
Fourth Challenge - Flaming High Jump

This should be an easy challenge compared to all of the others. In this room, you'll simply need to make effective use of the Fire Ring and the Flea Attack to reach the exit on the top right of the room.

You'll want to make a portal setup like the one pictured below.

To do this, you'll first want to position yourself about 4 blocks away from the right wall. Next, jump and perform a Flea Attack at the apex of your jump. Finally, at the very top of your Flea Attack, make a portal with the Fire Ring.

Then, simply make a portal on the ground. As soon as you emerge from the portal in the air, use the Flea Attack again to lift yourself onto the platform for the exit. You're now ready for the most difficult challenge of them all...
Woodpecker Trial - Fifth Challenge
Up until now, you'll have been able to complete the challenges using a keyboard as well as a controller. Unfortunately, this challenge is not possible without a controller, due to the limitations of simultaneous key presses on the keyboard. You'll need to frequently use down/left and down/right key presses at the same time as you make an attack, and the keyboard simply cannot do it.

With that being said, let's complete the Fifth Challenge!

Fifth Challenge - Airborne Blade Assault

In this room, you'll notice that you're immediately stripped of all your Magic. You will be unable to use any of your elements to assist you in this challenge.

Right from the start, do yourself a favor and equip your Iron Sword. Doing so will prevent you from accidentally killing the enemies in this room before you should by reducing your swing range.

Jump up to the top of the platforms nearby. From there, you'll see 3 enemies positioned left-to-right. Here, you'll use the Mole Attack to bounce on top of the enemies, kiling them as you proceed right. After bouncing off the third enemy, use the Flea Attack to propel yourself upwards onto the platform.

The next section will require you to do more or less the same thing. You'll be holding down the Mole Attack as you bounce upwards on the 4 enemies, and then using the Flea Attack once more to get you onto the platform above.

The next section is significantly more challenging. Upon reaching the second platform, you'll notice a sign pointing back the way you came.

You'll need to use a sustained Mole Attack again, but this time there's a catch: after defeating the last enemy in the downward line, you'll need to use a Flea Attack to boost yourself upwards so that you can Mole Attack the enemy higher up! After bouncing off of that one, repeat the process to bounce off the next enemy, but before you go to Flea Attack onto the next platform, BE CAREFUL: If you use your flea attack too early and too high up, you'll kill the enemy that's just above the platform, pictured below.

Once you safely make it to this platform, it's time to let the Lightning Sword shine. Go ahead and equip the Lightning Sword now, since you'll need it to defeat the last 4 enemies.

If you couldn't already guess, you'll want to use a jumping Flea Attack, and then bounce off the enemy in front of you with another Mole Attack. Then you'll be on top of the last platform, ready to take down the final 4 enemies.

Pay attention to the location of the two enemies in the picture below. You'll need to do this last section just right, or you'll have to start aaaaaall over again.

Notice their positioning: You have the first enemy below, then another above. The final two enemies are just off-screen to the right. You'll need to make two regular sword swings to kill them as you fall after killing the higher of the two enemies pictured here.

Just like before, give yourself a vertical head start with a jumping Flea Attack, then Mole Attack the lower enemy to bounce forward, using a SECOND Flea Attack to kill the highest enemy (or if you happened to kill it with your first Flea Attack, use the second attack anyway to gain more height), KEEP MOVING RIGHT and be prepared to swing twice at the right time to kill the last two enemies. If you do this correctly, you'll hear the success chime, and be granted access to the final (and much less difficult) Sixth Challenge!

Give yourself a pat on the back, because that took some serious skills!
Woodpecker Trial - Final Challenge
Sixth Challenge - Fireball Blitz

Here we are, at the last challenge!

Upon entering this room, you'll notice the red/blue change switch, which controls the red and blue walls on the right side of the room, behind which lies your target: the wall switch controlling the stone floor beneath you. You'll also notice that you still have no magic, but luckily you can regen Magic as needed by hitting the red/blue change switch with your sword.

To complete this room, you'll need to shoot a Fireball down the path to the target, and flip the red/blue switch with your sword in time to allow it to bypass the other walls blocking its path. It just requires a little time to be comfortable with the timing, but shouldn't take you more than a few tries to land the hit.

If you hit the target, once again you'll hear the success chime, and be granted access to your hard-earned prize: the Woodpecker Attack!
The Prize!
Getting the Woodpecker Attack

This should go without saying, but just like the other attack scrolls, simply talk to Combat Instructor Woodpecker and claim your prize.

To perform the attack, you'll need to input a rapid "hadouken" movement with the control stick/arrow keys, either down, down/right, right or down, down/left, left, followed by the attack button. If you do it correctly, you'll see a rapid 3-hit combo attack.

At this point, feel free to press up by the Woodpecker Statue and make your escape. Enjoy your new ability, and show Valion who's boss!

Funnily enough, it was hell when I first tried this (I first bought the game on switch), but the second one on the computer with the keyboard it was much easier.

"Not possible without a controller" Well, there is no official controller support for the game, so I'm gonna have to wing this one with the keyboard.

I didn't need the Lightning Sword for room 5. I used the Iron and Fire Sword throughout with no issues.

You did the second challenge very weirdly. just use your earth ring and then you fire ring on the platform. when they both hit the balls, hit the one next to the platform with your sword

I make a video for the fifth part of the trial. Feel free to add to your guide if you want. ;) https://youtu.be/6M9P7XCRe7A

For anyone else with fumble fingers like me, woodpecker trial 5 is much easier if you use joy2key and map mole attack (J and S) to L1 and flea attack (J and W) to R1. Your d-pad thumb can then concentrate on left and right only and you can use your index fingers for mole and flea. It made it much easier for me.

You don't actually need the lightning sword to do this (I did it with the masaume although it took me many tries)
I was always on your side. 25 Mar, 2019 @ 8:14pm
Yo, I know this is like a year late but I've managed to do the fifth trial with a keyboard so it IS possible to do it without a controller.
