Now I know it's pointless to send squads alone to take the enemy base when there's so many towers around. Catapults are very useful and very slow
Click on your barracks (or press F2) to enter the recruit menu. Hover your mouse over a unit you want to order. In the bottom right there are six icons presenting the costs of your unit. From Left to right they're: wood, food, iron, population, food/time (guess it's per minute) and time to built.
Villages with a working food production add a predefined food/time. Each unit you possess (beginning with your starting unit!) distracts from your food/time. You'll have to make up the balance. Too much units and you'll deplete your food depot. It's hard to accumulate food but very easy to spend it.
The difficult part is to play with as little squads as possible, without sacrificing your field presence/domination. If you forfeit too many villages your enemy will be able to snowball. Your starving troops can't trade with his troops anymore and will even lose fights while outnumbering the enemy.
