Basic game strategy
Basic game strategy:

This is a possible (and in my eyes realistic) primer for those who are really starting out. Some spoilers ahead.

Beginning of the game:
  • Survive!!
  • Bash thugs in alleys at night, boost weapons stats. Sell their equipment during the day. You’ll have to venture just outside of town to camp and regain strength often (the inn will be too expensive).
  • Stay in your current city (you’ll be destroyed on big trips in the countryside) until the entire party has Brigandine armour and a decent weapon and weapon skill 50+ at least.

Middle game:
  • Become heroes in three not too distant large cities, preferable with universities, by bashing thugs in alleys and performing quests at Fugger’s and Medici’s.
  • Tour these cities and train your characters at the university and in the monastery. While traveling from city to city you'll encounter thugs: sell their equipment to get some extra cash.
  • Get everyones religion at 30 (train in monastery or university). Once you reach this amount, if you have some extra cash, donate in city church (minimum 600 pf) to get one extra virtue (this way you create two saint-casters with high virtue quickly).
  • Collect saints and formulae in every city you encounter.
  • Make alchemist leader in some encounters, to teach him some speak common (have him talk his way into cities, talk his way out of encounters with bandits…; this will help him exchanging formulae with Alchemists in cities)
  • Find cluster of cities, close by, that (when you combine their shops) contain most alchemical ingredients (keep notes of the shop inventories: whenever you need to make potions, you can go on a "buying spree" without traveling too far).
  • Then become rich by: boosting intelligence of alchemist with saint, making large batch of potions, selling with boosted charisma (other saint), buying new ingredients, repeat.

Proceed to endgame if:
  • you have a few potions of every kind (especially: firewall to fight fire elementals in mines and dragons, stonetar for pit traps in mines)
  • you can create essence of grace (= healing) potions, and have them in plenty (50+)
  • you know the most useful saints (and can cast them): see lists elsewhere.
  • you can survive fights easily
  • your artificer is at 50
  • (your healer is at 30)
  • you have good equipment
  • every party member a 37 Q Nurnburg full plate
  • every party member a 37 Q Nurnburg chainmail (to wear whenever you expect to face potions or fire, because this degrades armour, and chainmail is a lot cheaper but still good)
  • 37Q Nurnburg weapons for everyone
  • you have very fast / superb horses
  • you can gain money by alchemical potion creation and selling.

End game:
  • Start doing mines, witch quests, the “templar” quest, dragons.
  • Check out rare locations (devil’s bridge, …).

the Q-values are randomized a bit each game, so dont expect to always find q37 in Nürnberg
