Engineer Rollouts
By nedoplatek
Rollouts are not only for Soldiers and Demomans. Engineers have their own rollouts too. But Engie's rollouts are significantly diffrent though. Instead of focusing on how to make pogo with rockets or stickies, Engineer's focus is on fast, capable deployment of yourself and your buildings.

So this guide is here to help you with your stuff get to the front quicker before the gates open.

Goal of Engie rollouts
The Main goal of theese rollouts is to have your buildings on the front on ideal spots before the gates open. Getting your buildings on lever 3 in setup time (which is on A/D, Payloads in most of situations around 60 seconds) can be pretty hard so we're using rollouts to make our life easier.

Engineer Rollouts can be done by many diffrent ways.
You can put everything before spawn gates and upgrade your stuff from spawn and then move it to the front.
Or you can actually setup on your spots, upgrading your buildings with support of metal packs from surrounding.
But in my opinion, most usefull and effective way is Jag + Eureka Effect rollout. (or Jag Effect rollout).
Jag + Eureka Effect
Jag + Eureka Effect rollout is on my opinion, most useful and effective rollout on A/D and Payload.

Jag + Eureka Effect rollout starts with dropping your Teleport Entrance and Dispenser before spawn doors. You now want to setup Teleport on Exit on front. After you've done this, use your EE to teleport yourself to the spawn. Switch to the Jag and setup your Sentry in front of spawn doors. Upgrade your stuff to lever 3. (teleport needs only 200 metal to upgrade on lever three due to buff from EE).
Now when you'll have everything upgraded, switch back to Eureka Effect and move your Sentry trough Teleport on you favourite sentry spot. Repeat this for dispenser, switch to melee of your choice. This shouldn't take no longer than 60 seconds.

Doing J+EE rollout on Attack isn't really worth it.
Help with Rescue Ranger
Don't forget that Rescue ranger can help you on cartain maps with teleporting your buildings from distance only for 100 metal. Use this feature whenever you can!

Payload rollouts
Defense

For defense you better use Jag Effect rollout. If you can't get your nest up in time or your teammates constantly steals your ammo packs, you always should head back to the base.

Offense

First thing you should do when the gates open is to drop your mini near cart, help your team clean the area and usually if your team can the first point, it's good to switch to normal sentry. But also playing Battle Engie with mini sentry is effective and it can help.
Attack/Defend rollouts
Defense

Again, I found J+EE best way just like Payload.

Offense

Depends on the map. If you can setup in front of spawn doors, (Dustbowl's 2nd and 3rd stage) go for level three. Otherwise use gunslinger with mini sentry.
Control Points rollouts
Control points are little bit more...complicated. You see there are 5CPs and 3CPs. Both have similar rollouts but unlike on Attack / Deffend or Payload, there exists multiple types of rollouts based on how forward from middle point do you want to setup.

5CP

Aggressive rollout

This one is tough one but extremly fun to play. Basically aggressive rollout is just how it sounds...
You want to get to the middle fastest as possible with your team. Build Dispenser and Sentry. After securing the area and capping the point. You basically need to move with your team.
But if you fail, your team wouldn't have support from you, no teleporters, no dispensers, nothing.
I reccomend this for advanced Engies.

Passive rollout

This is more common but it gets the job done.
Passive means that you want to setup your stuff behind your team. Somewhere around middle and your second. You're now tool for support but also defense and your sentry should punish cheeky scouts who's wants to get a little bit more behind. Also you should involve teleporters in your building blueprint.

NOTE: I know that teleporters can be pretty hard to setup on 5CP due to constantly moving spawns but placing one doen't really hurd anybody so if you have time and your team is pushing like for an minute or two. Head back to base and setup a Tele.

3CP

This is exactly same as the passive one from 5CP but the tele is more important than usual.
King of the Hill rollouts
Like on 75% you'll see Engie with mini-sentry on KoTH. And that's completly fine beacuse mini + shotgun can be more than usefull. But running lvl 3 on King of the hill is also pretty good. Good placed Sentry can be an ultimate fortress on KoTH.

I'm takling here about Sentries but don't forget on teleporters which are important on King of the Hill (they are important everywhere). Once you have Sentry built, you should always put dispenser behind cover where teammates can safely return for health and ammo.
Binds
There are some usefull bind that I found or what I use:

Fast loadout switch

To use Jag Effect rollout effectivly, theese binds can help you by switching your loadouts (A,B,C,D)

bind "KP_END" "load_itempreset 0" bind "KP_DOWNARROW" "load_itempreset 1" Bind "KP_PGDN" "load_itempreset 2" Bind "KP_LEFTARROW" "load_itempreset 3"

Quick building

Instantly puts chosen building in toolbox and gets ready to build. Also It can destroy buildings without destruction PDA. Usable when having Frontier Justice equipped.

bind "MOUSE3" "destroy 2 0; build 2 0 bind "4" "destroy 0 0; build 0 0" bind "5" "destroy 1 0; build 1 0" bind "6" "destroy 1 1; build 1 1"

in order:
  • Sentry
  • Dispenser
  • Tele Entrance
  • Tele Exit
Practice
It is understandable that you will make a few mistakes while rolling yourself to the front. To improve this, I reccomend nothing but PRACTICE. Create your own server and try some rollouts. Or join in pubs and try it with actual teammates. Your fellow engies can assist you.
End
Alright I think that is all that I've got for you today. I hope you learnt at least something here. If you have better rollout type, I'm interested in it so you can write in comments.
Don't forget to rate this guide and also if you aren't part of my steam group, make it happen right here!

Thanks for reading!

I find I like building the sentry at the nest location and levelling I when I come back with a lvl 3 dispenser. That way the gun keeps my exit from being camped or at least alerts me to the presence of a camper and clears the site for my nest.
I'd rather a lvl 1 gun that's being useful to a lvl 3 that's guarding nothing because it's waiting to be deployed still, it could be the difference between a flanking pyro, scout or demoknight making it past the team or not.
