How to access the game menu (and quit)

When I first started the game, I didn't know how to access the game menu, for example to quit. Thanks to searching the forums, I found the solution...

You have to finish the first two quests (the crossword and the snowmobile), then enter the hotel. Once in there, you can just access the menu by pressing the Escape key. Easy!

I wonder why the devs couldn't hint at that in any way...

did anyone figure out i play then go to the main menu and quit and i can see while iam playing thaat the gamne is saved ut when i come back there is nothing any help?

Actually the escape key does literally nothing for me. I had alt+tab out and stop from the library.
