overall I play AC with music and then I just imagine some animations with music and then the idea just comes to mind.
I use adobe after effects (it gives you control over everything, effects frames everything) for editing and shadowplay for recording. However I have seen amazing work in sony vegas and people record with fraps because they say it gives the real quality while shadowplay renders to h.264.
