The Cvar Command

Before you host a server, when you're on the main menu, open the console with your tilde (~) key and enter:

g_multiplayer_limit XXX

Just change XXX to a number (like 6) and then host the lobby.

For example if you wanted an 8 player game you would enter:

g_multiplayer_limit 8

Note that officially the game supports 4 players and you may experience instability with larger numbers.

has anyone figured out how to open console commands? i cant seem to get mine to work, or has there been any mods that work?

My brother in christ, I can't even keep a 4 player instance stable.

You dont have to be in the title screen or menu for this to work. You can be in the game (At town) and still type the command. You max player limit will still be set to the specified number.
